Much interest has been displayed in the recent cooperative movement of the Young Men's Institute for development along educational lines. The plans, in brief, are to carry on debates, entertainments and athletic events between the various councils of this progressive organization in this State. The initial event of this type was held last Sunday evening, vhen the Phil Sheridan Council, of Scranton. delighted the members of the local council with an excellent entertainment that was heartilv enjoyed. One number that stood out prominently was.

the excellent rendition of two scenes fnm Act. V. of Shakespeare's "Othello" by Frank Cough lin, who is widely known as a Shakespearean reider and scholar. He is familiar with every line of Shakespeare's leading plays and at present is working hard to produce a Shakespearean play that he hopes will presented before the Pittston Council. Mr.

AVOCA. High School Commencement. Fourteen pupils of the High school, who ha.d firished the course per scribed, were last evenimr at the commencement exercises held in the Sarsfield Hall. The hall was scarcely adequate Uo accommodate tl.e large crowd that attended the exercises. It ia estimated Jthat between stven and eight hundred were present.

Purple and gold, the class colors, predominated in the decorating effect. The stage was decked with palms, ferns and cut daisies, the class flower. Commanding a conspicuous plane cn the stage was the class banner, on which was written the motto "Honors Wait at Labor'." Gate." The nrogram opened with a. selection by the pupils of the High school. The salutation was given by Miss Mary Barrett.

Then followed a most pleasing program of oratory, punctuated with vocal and musical selections. Miss Myra Prentice gave the key oration. John Torney responded for the Junior, claps. Miss Prentice also" delivered the valedictory address. The class poem, "Honors Wait at Labor's Gate," was recited by Miss Margaret Reap.

Attorney John It. Reap presented the diplomas and also made a few timely remarks on the value cf ee'uca'lion. At the close of the program Prof. C. B.

Webber paid a tribute to the class for their efficient work during the past year and concluded by saying lhat he was welj pleased with the result. Invitations have been issued for the coming marriage of Miss Jean Adair Thompson, of South Main street, to Waiter B. Graham, of Pittston. Messrs Joseph Ward. Kdmunrt O'Brien.

Charles Golden and Sterling Conky attended the dance given last night in the Visiting Nurse rooms, at Pittston. WYOMING. Tax Levy 10 Mills. At the regular meeting of the borough council, held last evening, all members were present and considerable business was done. The ordinance providing for the paving of East Eighth street passed third and final reading.

An ordinance fixing the millage for the coming year at: Water and light mill; borough, mills; r.ink'ng fund, 414 mills, also passed third reading. A committ composed of Mrs. Jennie Mrs. Margaret Ath erton and Miss Mame Myers, addressed the council on the subject of a tur Mc drinking fountain to be placed in front of the town hall. It is proposed to raise the necessary "funds, partly by popular subscription and partly through the aid of the borough.
