Other players scheduled to see action, in order to get the inside line on a starting lineup, include catchers Eddie Shupe, Charlie DeFranza and Marty Higgins, infielders Bobby Courter, Bobby Valese, Kevin Eltzholtz, Lynn Regan, Bob DeFalco and Eddie Eltzholtz, and outfielders Ralph Shupe, Johnny Eltzholtz, Pete Porcelli Frank Richardi, Bob Pomponio and Dom Sedicino. Other new talent may also be worked into the game. Bollinger's is allowed a 25-man roster in both leagues it is scheduled to compete in.

The Bollinger's Insurance softball team (formerly the Montclair Carmels) was. forced to postpone practice sessions last Wednesday and Saturday due to wet grounds. Manager Daniel Gautieri plans to hold a session Sunday at 10 A.M. at George Washington Playground. Following a one-hour batting drill, the team will play its first nine-inning practice game against the Newark Ramblers.

Plans are to use Billy Eltzholtz, Wally Price and Jim Delaney to pitch three innings each. Ken Larsen may also see some pitching With Captain Bill Kennedy leading the way, the Montclair YMCA handball team made a strong showing in the New Jersey State Singles Tournament which concluded last Wednesday at the Orange YMCA. Kennedy, who had never advanced past the third round of the tournament in six previous attempts finished third in the 48-man field. He was defeated in the semifinals and won the consolation for third. The only disappointment for the Montclair club was that its number one player, Don Wernes, who was runner up in 1973 and second-seeded this year, was upset in the third round.

Four other Montclair players, Bob Venezia and Pete Pignatello of Montclair, and Carl Geek and Vin Stagliano of Cedar Grove, played well in the 10-day event. Kennedy, ousted Mike Glickson of the Orange YMCA, 21-17, 21-14, in the second round and then upset third seeded Ed Woerner of the Plainfield YMCA, a three-time former champion, 19-21, 21-3, 21-12, in the third round. Then he topped sixth-seeded Jim Furey of the West Essex YMCA in Livingston, 21-11, 21-8, in the quarter-finals before losing to John Sabo Jr. of Orange, 21-14, 21-12, in the semifinals. Kennedy was awarded third place when Tom Natale of the Jersey City YMCA was unable to play the consolation match.

Wernes, a Cedar Grove resident, had completed an excellent North Jersey Handball League season and was expected to make a run at the championship. He conquered Rene Franco of the Passaic YMCA, 21-10, 21-14, in the second round before being surprised by Sabo in the third round, 21-12, 21-13. Geek and Stagliano were both first -round winners before succumbing in the second round. Geek topped Joe Eichler of Orange 21-8, 21-4, before falling to seventh-seeded Lou Borelli of West Essex 21-19, 21-18. Stagliano ripped Ron Critchley of the Paterson YMCA 21-5, 21-4, before losing to Natale 21-13, 21-10.

Venezia was edged in the first round by Al Abrahams of West Essex 21-15, 9-21, 21-12, and Pignatello, playing in his first state singles, was downed by Dick Gavel of West Essex 21-13, 21-11. Princeton's Jadwin Gymnasium is the largest collegiate arena in New Jersey, with a capacity of 7,550. Mrs. Neil Jochelson, hospitality chairman, and her committee, will serve refreshments. The local group, which numbers nearly 300 members, invites those interested in attending the meeting to call membership chairman Mrs. Lewis Dana at 783-5639.

Careless Driving Ernest C. Smith, 50, of "It was a big win for us," said a happy Coach Bob Layery after his St. Cassian's Grammar School track team opened its dual-meet season with a 121-97 victory over Sacred Heart of Newark. "Sacred Heart participated in the National Youth Games and placed fifth overall," Lavery continued. "Though the final score was big, it doesn't reflect the total meet.

It was close until the mile. I just hope we can do as well in this year's Essex County Championships." St. Cassian's, coming off unbeaten cross-country and indoor track seasons, swept the mile in both the junior class (12 and under) and the open class (13 and over). There will be only Black and Brown Belts competing, men and women in Form, "Kata," and men only in fighting, "Kumite." Competitors will come from the entire East Coast, in order to qualify for the nationals to be held in San Francisco, on June 29 and 30. Overseeing the event will be Teruyuki Okazaki, technical advisor of the A.A.U. Jerry Thomson, chairman of the A.A.U. Karate in New Jersey; Robin Reilly, the chairman of the technical committee for New Jersey and Kaloudis. The East Coast Regional Karate Tournament will be held at Montclair State's Panzer on Sunday.

Preliminary eliminations will take place in the morning and the finals will begin at 4 P.M. General admission is $2. This event is sanctioned by the Amateur Athletic Union of the U.S.A. and sponsored by the New Jersey A.A.U. Karate Association.

The Koei-Kan Karate-Do Club of Montclair State is host. According to Edward Kaloudis, chairman of the tournament committee and a faculty member of Montclair State, "the On Tennis Team Sophomore Kit O'Grady, daughter of Mrs. Patricia O'Grady, of Midland Gerry O'Brien was second in the 440. Pete Johnson was a double winner in the open division, taking the 60 and 100-yard dashes. Dave Lavery added a win in the 440 in 1:09.

Miller took the 880 in 2:19 followed closely by Lavery. The 440 relay unit of Andy Johnson, Walt O'Brien, Tim Evans and Johnson won in Lions to Honor Mountie Team The annual Montclair Lions Club baseball luncheon, honoring Coach Connie Egan and his Montclair High baseball squad, will be held on Wednesday, May 29, at 12 noon, at Robin Hood Inn, Clifton. An outstanding baseball personality will be the principal speaker. Held for many years, the luncheon has been addressed by outstanding baseball dignitaries, including major leaguers, umpires coaches. Clarence Ross All American "The Swim Master," official publication of the AAU Masters Swimming Committee, lists Upper Montclair's Clarence Ross, of the Montclair YMCA, as a 1973 All-American. In 1973, Ross broke every national and world record in master's freestyle swimming. In the National Short Course Champions he entered the limit of five events and won all, breaking four records in the process. Ross first made the Ail-American swim team in 1920 when he was competing for Rutgers University and the New York Athletic Club. Former Mounties On Falcon Team Junior attackman Bill Grimes heads a trio of former Montclair High lacrosse standouts that are currently seeing action on the Bowling Green State University varsity.

The other two former Mounties are freshmen John Regan and Pete Speers. Grimes, a two-year let-terman, is manning a first-team attack post for the Falcons who are currently leading the Midwest Lacrosse Association standings with a 2-0 record. He has three goals and two assists at this point. Grimes, a second team All-State attackman for Montclair High, made the transition from midfield to natural attack last season and responded with 33 points (18 goals, 15 assists), third best on the team. He tied for ground ball honors with 67 and was second lowest on the team with just four penalties in 13 games.

American Legion Honors Ron Kulik Ron Kulik, a teacher at Montclair High, was honored as Nutley 's top amateur athlete for 1973 at the twenty-seventh annual All-Sports Awards Dinner. Nutley Post 70 American Legion presented the award.

Kulick, a track star at Montclair State, is a nationally-known race walker. He won theIC4A. mile in Madison Square Garden in 1958 and has been invited to the Olympic Trials every four years since 1960. and life FDU to a 9-8 lacrosse victory over Montclair State at Brook-dale Park, Tuesday. 842. Two Golfers Tie In Opening Event Fifty-six women participated in the first tournament of the season held Tuesday by the Upper Montclair Country Club's 18-hole group. Class A honors were shared by Irene Boughton and Ruth Freyberger, both with a score of net 82. Lois Areson and Louise Sutcliffe deadlocked for second at net 87. Dorothy Vilas carded a net 84 for first place in Class one stroke ahead of second-place Marge Swinarton.

Pearl Maziarz and Muriel Kennedy tied for third at net 87. Susan Haidinger's net 78 earned her first place laurels in Class C. Mary Livesy was second at net 85 and lottie Van Strat was third at net 89. Night Tennis At Essex Park Tennis courts Essex Park have been open for play since April 1 and, since Monday, have been lighted for night play. Lights will be used for night tennis through the season at Essex, weather permitting.

Montclair High and Immaculate Conception High use Essex Park almost daily for their matches from 3 to 5:30 P.M. but, other than those matches, the courts are open to the public. Permit applications have been mailed to all former permit holders, residents and non-residents. Any new residents are asked to call the Recreation Office, 744-1400, Ext. 35, for information regarding use of the courts.

Tennis courts at Mountainside and Nishuane Parks will be opening the first weekend in May, weather permitting. Tournament applications and rules will be available at the courts on opening day. Players are reminded that he deadline for tournament entry is May 12. The draw will be held at the Recreation Office at 8 P.M. on May 16.

MRS. JOHN MAGRANE. representing the Montclair Golf Club, participated in the forty-fourth Bermuda Invitation Ladies' Amateur Golf Championship at the Mid-Ocean Club. The tournament concluded April 6. Tribe Linksmen Win 2 Matches Montclair State's golf team moved its record to 3-2 with two wins in its last three outings.

The Indians won a sudden-death victory over Rutgers on Thursday then defeated William Paterson, W2-T2, Monday before losing to once-beaten East Stroudsburg State, 14-4, also on Monday. Bob Nitkewicz was the lone MSC player to win all three of his individual matches. Tom Rucinsky slipped in a 25-foot birdie putt on the par five, 520-yard fourth hole at Rutgers to give the Indians Thursday's victory after the score was deadlocked at 9-9 after regulation play.
