Last year Montclair had pulled off a sensational upset, ending a St. Peter's win streak. Playing the same order of players they used against Seton Hall, the Mounties believed a win was possible.

Shapiro continued his strong playing by totally dominating his opponent in Carr and Dave Dollar, a senior but also said that Mark Lucyk, Ed Phalen and Rick Wood, all up from the JVs "look pretty good too." The Lions were 7-5 overall last season but put together a 7-1 record to win the North Jersey Independent School League Championship. "I have to say that this year's outlook is terrific," said Hrab. "We lost Mike Zebrowski and Jeff Fischer to graduation and assistant coach Bob Black left the school for another job, but our infield and outfield are basically back in tact." also a candidate. Pete Perretti returns at second base and, is Hrab's words, "pretty well has things locked up" there. Harlan Gibbs will probably start at third.

Hrab may have a problem at shortop since starter Tim Wallace just went into the hospital for a shoulder operation. Baccaro, when he's not pitching, as a possibility as is sophomore Stu Carr who might also see action in the outfield. Hrab said his outfield might be made up of Lyons, a well-played win. However, losses by Heising and Pickering were a blow to the team that began to signal the last moments for the 1971 State Champs. Lack's The 38-match win streak of the Montclair High School chess team came to an end as the Mounties took third in the New Jersey High School Team Championship.

St. Peter's Prep defeated the Mounties 3-2 as it retook the state championship Montclair had captured from it the year before. The Mountie team, composed of Charles Brenner, Bob Lack, Ted Pickering, Carl Shapiro and Paul Heising, entered the 5-round event first-seeded. The team showed its strength by defeating Lenape 5-0, Warren Hills 4-1 and Hun 4V2-V2 in the first 3 rounds. Warren Hills, incidentally, took sixth in the 40-team tournament, losing only to Montclair.

Montclair hit its tough opponents starting in the fourth round when it faced Seton Hall, a fairly strong team which the Mounties had defeated 4-1 in league play. Trying to focus on the lower boards, these were played by Pickering and Shapiro, while Heising was moved up to third. Shortly after the match began, Lack, on second game on second board was against a higher-rated player who usually played first. Brenner had a positional advantage, but a win would Many people envision a hiph school baseball pitcher as being tall and lean with a steely glance and a blazing fastball. Those people would find it hard to believe that Alan Kaytes is a pitcher. However 4 of the 5 teams Kaytes faced last year as a pitcher for Montclair Academy's Lions were convinced that none of the above were necessary requirements.

Kaytes, who was a short, stocky sophomore last season, is a short, stocky junior this year and, although his fastball is far from blazing, he will probably use his bagfull of off -speed pitches to great advantage again this year. The talented righthander is the "ace" of coach George Hrab's staff which also includes senior righthander Tom Brueckner, who is tall and lanky, and 2 juniors up from the JVs, John Baccaro and Chris Soboma. Baccaro, who pitched some varsity relief last season, will probably enter the starting rotation. Sophomore John Lagasi, an outfielder and part-time catcher last year, will probably be the Lions' first-string receiver this year. Hrab said that Gary Caille, a transfer student, said he was interested in catching so he will probably be Lagasi's back-up man.

Lefty Jim Lyons returns at first base and alternate with Brueckner when Brueckner isn't pitching. Sarah Werner Wins 4 Medals Sarah Werner of Upper Montclair, representing the Montclair YMCA, won 4 first-place medals in a gymnastics meet at North Junior High in Bloomfield last week. Miss Werner won all-around, balance beam, vaulting and uneven bars. Other Montclair YMCA team members who did well were Lynn Setteducato who finished in both all around and vaulting and Donna Watkins who placed first in free exercise. Giarrusso Lands Large Sailfish John Giarrusso, of 102 North Mountain won angling recognition when he landed a 68-pound sailfish in the general division of the Metropolitan Miami Fishing Tournament.

Heising, desire and determination and may be able to play later on. We don't want to take any unnecessary chances though." Egan isn't crying however. No coach would with the likes of Dave Orr, Greg D'Alessandro, Bob Becker and Bob Cummings in the starting rotation. AH are righthanders and Egan said "I am anticipating these 4 to make the squad and handle the pitching for us this year." Orr, a senior, was 4-1 last season. D'Alessandro only pitched a couple of innings in relief.

The Marlins were awarded first place trophies in the 15-17 age group with a meet high 108 points and the 13-14 group with 54 points. The 10-under group missed first place by 1 point to Summit and the 11-12 year olds took a third. The Marlins were the only team to take home 2 first places. Qualifiers for the Central Atlantic meet finals are determined by the 6 fastest times from the Northern and Southern sections in each individual event and relay.

The finals will be held April 15 at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania and the 6 finalists will come from New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland and Pennsylvania. Double gold medal winners for the Northern section were Diane Jaglowski, who also broke 2 sectional records in the 200-yard and 100-yard freestyles, Diane Soden broke her record in the 200-Individual Medley and won the 100-yard butterfly and Laurie Schulte won both the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle. The relay team of Denise Killeen, Robin Schulte, Diane Soden and Diane impressive is the fact that Brenner has now won his last 19 games. Shapiro, who finished 4y2-12, now has 31 straight games without a loss. Undaunted, the Mounties will now participate in the league playoffs and then go to the National High School Championship.

One man doesn't make an entire team. However, the absence of that man can, in many cases, hurt a team. Such is the case with Rich Fortunato and Montclair High baseball. Fortunato, who pitched and played shortstop for the Mounties last season, probably won't be able to play at all this year. The talented senior broke his arm while quarterbacking the Mounties in last season's football victory over Clifton.

"Although his arm is out of the cast, it is still very weak," said Mountie baseball coach Connie Egan. "It's still not completely healed and as of right now he won't play although he has a lot of beginning of last season but went into a mild slump toward the end. "He's been hitting well in practice and has been much more consistent," stated Egan. Sophomore Bill Wilson and junior Bill Knox are working out at left field. Terry Burns should start at center field.

He's a senior who rotated between the outfield and second base last campaign. Senior Ken Byrne looks like the starting rightfielder. Egan hopes to improve on last season's 11-13 slate. The Mounties will get their Senior catcher Carl Warner is returning. He will be backed up by Mike Brune who is up from the JVs.

Warner handled the pitchers well last season. Left-hander Kelly Reilly is up from the JVs and looks like the starting first baseman. "He was a fair hitter last season and is an excellent fielder." said Egan. "Also being a lefty makes things nice." Brian Scantlebury, a JV last year, and Steve Sellick are battling for the second base berth. Becker, when he's not pitching, and freshman Dale Berra are working out at shortstop.

Egan isn't certain yet who will get the Steve Ruccio, a senior, is playing a higher-rated player, had an even position. However, a clever combination enabled Heising to seize the lead and pull off an excellently played upset. Brenner found the win, as was expected of the number one high school player in the state. The Squirts played 2 games, losing and tying the other. The first game, at Brick, was a 2-2 tie until the last few minutes of the third period when Brick scored twice for a 4-2 win. The second game seemed to be all Montclair as Jim McCarthy's "hat trick" in the first period gave Montclair a 3-0 edge.

Brick bounced back with 2 goals in the second. Pete Dodd scored to give Montclair a 4-2 edge but Brick tied the score at 4-4 in the final frame. Two losses and a tie were posted by the Pee Wees.
