Larrieu-Smith has been running competitively since 1969, when she was 16, so she feels for Budds volatile political situation; Budd, the barefoot-running South African native, was forced to gain citizenship in Britain to enter the Olympics. Todays action also features Evelyn Ashford in the first two rounds of the womens 200 meters, Carl Lewis in the semifinals and final of the mens 200, and other finals in the pole vault, womens 400-meter hurdles and mens 400 meters.

Decker is seeking berths on both the 1,500 and teams. The world champion in both events, Decker opened her action Tuesday with an easy first-round 3,000 victory. She was to have the first round of the 1,500 today and the semifinals of the 3,000 tonight.

But it is a double she is going to have to get used to for the Olympics. "My main priority at the Olympics will be to win, Decker said. People dont quite understand; they think since I won the double at Helsinki (in an international meet last August) I should run the double here. The heat and smog will be different in Los Angeles than in Helsinki. "If I don't think I can recover by the time of the first event's final, I will drop out of the second event.

I want to be fresh for the first final. She added that it may be until the final Olympic entry deadline before she decides to double. In that case, an alternate would have to train heavily until she makes her decision, which bothers Decker only slightly. "I hate to do that to another athlete, she said, but to give myself the best chance at the Olympics, I have to do it. Now that the Mets are battling the Phillies for first, theyre still handling the Philadelphia left-hander. ZJ Duran has held world titles in three divisions lightweight, welterweight and junior middleweight. He is one of only seven fighters to hold titles in three weight divisions. His overall record is 76-6 with 57 knockouts. The loss to Hearns on June 15 marked the first time in Durans storied career that he had been stopped by another fighter.

Hearns floored Duran three times, more than he had been knocked down in his entire 18-year-career. Esteban DeJesus knocked Duran down twice in the three times he faced him. By fighting Hearns, instead of No. 1 contender Mike McCallum, Duran was stripped of his World Boxing Association junior middleweight title. Hearns retained his World Boxing Council super welterweight title.

PANAMA CITY, Panama (UPI) After being rocked by Thomas Hearns in the second round of their title fight last week, Roberto Duran has decided to put his Hands of Stone to rest. Duran, one of the best fighters pound-for-pound in boxing history, returned to his native Panama Wednesday and announced his retirement. An estimated 1,000 Panamanians met Duran at the airport. All I can say is Hands of Stone (his nickname) is no longer thinking about boxing, he said. He is thinking of other things, lets say of having fun.

I believe that after 17 or 18 years of boxing, I have given everything for this country. And I hope the country knows how to respond. four-game winning streak. At Cincinnati, Jeff Russell pitched a six-hitter and drove in the winning run to help the Reds extend the Dodgers losing streak to seven games.

At Pittsburgh, Lee Lacy singled in two runs and Jose DeLeon hurled a three-hitter to help the Pirates end a four-game losing streak. The loss ended Philadelphias six-game winning streak and left the Phillies one-half game ahead of the second-place Mets in the NL East. It feels good to beat them and I know Carlton is a famous pitcher, said Strawberry, whose club entered this season 32-29 against Carlton. But the guys tell me he doesnt always do that well against the Mets.

Strawberry has slumped since May, but now has three homers in three games. His drive was his first homer at Shea Stadium since April 28. The Phillies, who took a 2-0 lead on Tim Corcorans two-run single in the first inning, were irate over a call by home plate umpire Fred Brocklander in the fifth. They claimed he blew the call on a play in which Hayes was out at the plate when third baseman Hubie Brooks fielded Garry Maddoxs grounder and threw to catcher Mike Fitzgerald. Mookie Wilson added a two-run homer for the Mets and Corcoran added a third RBI with a sacrifice fly for Philadelphia.

Big Sky Cagers Picked in Draft BOISE, Idaho (UPI) Three Big Sky Conference basketball players, including the leagues second-leading scorer last season, have been drafted by National Basketball Association teams. Boise States Vince Hinchen, runnerup in the league scoring race with 17.6 points per game, was selected in the fifth round Tuesday by the Cleveland Cavaliers. The 6-foot-5 swing man played different positions in each of the last three seasons at BSU and was named to the all-conference squad after his senior season. He was the first guard selected by the Cavs.

Montana guard Marc Glass was selected in the fourth round by the San Diego Clippers. The 6-3 all-Big Sky performer scored 11.9 points and passed for 4.8 assists per game last year. Idaho States Mike Williams was drafted by the Seattle SuperSonics in the 10th round. The 6-8 forward was a second-team all-Big Sky pick last season after scoring 13.2 points and grabbing 8.1 rebounds per game for the Bengals. NEW YORK (UPI) -Although Mario Soto of the Cincinnati Reds has been suspended five days, he will pitch tonight against the Los Angeles Dodgers because Reds officials are appealing the suspension.

Soto and Atlanta Braves outfielder Claudell Washington were penalized Wednesday by National League President Chub Feeney for participating in a bench-clearing brawl Saturday night. Soto, besides being suspended five days, also was fined $5,000 for fighting and throwing a baseball into a pile of players during the fight in Atlanta. It was the second time in less than a month that Soto has been suspended five days. The first suspension was for fighting in a game at Chicago May 27. Washington was fined and suspended three days for pushing an umpire to the ground and starting last Saturday nights fight.

Both suspensions were to begin Wednesday night, but the Reds quickly appealed Feeneys decision. The Braves said the Players Association is appealing Washingtons penalty. As a result, both Soto and Washington will be able to continue playing, pending the hearings on their appeals. No date has been set for the hearings.
