'r'or'r 9 8 The SUN, Flagstaff, Arizona, Tuesday, June 10, 1986 Chairman of Arizona Libertarian Party Resigns But being a Libertarian is about as much fun as you can have with your clothes on and they had made it not fun. Sturzenacker said his philosophy in heading the party was to tell people to lead, follow or get the hell out the way, an attitude that apparently offended committee members. PHOENIX (AP) Arizonas Libertarian Party chairman has resigned following a vote of the partys executive committee to oust him from the volunteer post, officials confirmed. Ken Sturzenacker, who had been state chairman since March 1985, said Monday that he had intended to resign before the executive committees May 17 vote, largely because of dissension within the party, which had taken the fun out of the job. But Sturzenacker was accused by committee members of spending money without authorization, alienating party members and not coming up with enough voter signatures to put the Libertarians on the state ballot this year.

He also offended committee members by secretly aspiring to run for governor, even though the committee already had endorsed Phoenix bail bondsman Jim Walters, party officials said. But one committee member, Michael Kelly, said Sturzenacker was the victim of internal, political squabbling that will rob the party of the hardest-working leader it has had. It cant help but be divisive for the party in the sense that were going to be fighting for our lives, said Kelly, the partys Maricopa County chairman. Ken has been pretty much a full-time chairman. Were going to lose a lot of visibility over the next year.

Sturzenacker said he was asked to step down for partially defined reasons that were based on political rhetoric and nothing more. He said he had done more to collect voter signatures than any other committee member and never spent beyond the budget without first informing treasurer Kathy Harrer, a committee member who supported his ouster. Whenever something goes wrong, the person in charge has to take the responsibility, he said. LULAC Election Challenged Hopi Tribe Drops Law Firm counsel is selected that they will take over the cases, Kennedy said. One of the cases in which Kennedy and Pugsley had represented the Hopis was the so-called Bennett Freeze case, involving a Hopi claim for much of the western sector of the Navajo Reservation.

By The Associated Press The Hopi Tribe has announced it no longer will use a Salt Lake City law firm as the tribes legal counsel in nine pending land cases. A brief announcement issued Sunday said the firm of Kennedy and Pugsley had tendered its resipation and tribal officials said Monday the firm wanted too large of a share of any judgment or settlement the tribe obtained in the still pending cases. Tribal officials said they were seeking other legal representation. John Paul Kennedy, a member of the law firm, declined to comment beyond confirming that the split had occurred. I assume that whpn substitute follow the old constitution and bylaws, he said.

Certain delegates were not eligible to vote and there was no quorum for the election, Garcia said. He said he does not recopize Zozaya as the state director and maintains that it is within his authority as current state director to call for another election. The election will be conducted before the national LULAC convention that starts July 9 in Las Vegas, Garcia said. But Zozaya said in Phoenix Monday that the election was fair and legal and that LULACs new constitution was followed. She also said a quorum existed.

Zozaya also challenged cias authority to conduct a new election. Robert Rivas, national vice president of LULACs Far West Region, which includes Arizona, said from Las Vegas Monday that Oscar Moran, national president of LULAC, will review the conflict once he receives an official written notice of the dispute. Garcia said he is preparing to send the notice this week. Rivas said LULAC officials will probably wait until after the national convention to resolve the dispute. According to a LULAC news release, delegates to the organizations 35th annual state convention, which was June 1 in Phoenix, elected Julia Zozaya state director. Zozaya was the only remaining candidate after a surprise withdrawal by the incumbent state director, Steve Garcia, who had strongly campaigned for re-election, the news release said. But Garcia, of Holbrook, denied Monday that he had withdrawn from the contest, saying he had informed delegates that the election was illegal and that we didnt want to be part of any illegalities. Garcia maintained that the election was not conducted according to LULACs new constitution and bylaws, which were enacted last year. Some delegates chose to Panel to Review Rules Covering Erotic Dancers PHOENIX (AP) A proposed state rule requiring erotic dancers to keep their distance from bar customers may keep them from collecting tips and put many out of a job, bar owners say.

The state Liquor Department plans a July 9 public hearing on the proposed rule, which Superintendent Philip MacDonnell said is intended to reinforce the current ban on customers touching the dancers. When you allow scantily clad dancers to come within microinches of customers, you allow for touching and it happens, MacDonnell said. He wants to require dancers performing on a club floor to stay at least seven feet away from customers. Those performing on a stage or behind a rope or some other barrier woulu have to keep a distance of at ieast three feet. The rule was proposed by MacDonnell under a new state law that allows the department to replate the age and conduct of erotic dancers.

McDonnell said he plans to set the minimum age at 21, the same as the minimum drinking age. Dancers as young as age 15 have not been uncommon, he said. But several Phoenix-area club owners say the rule against touching already is being enforced. And, they say the additional rule will put many dancers out of work because it will keep them from collecting tips, which often are their only pay. Roy Haddix, manager of Cowgirls in Scottsdale, said the replation would force many clubs to switch to stage shows, which would put many dancers out of work Teachers Win Share of Jackpot PHOENIX (AP) Seven Tolleson school teachers got together to buy one of four winning tickets sold last week for the Arizona Lotterys weekly numbers game, fe Pick," lottery officials say.

The school teachers will share one-fourth of the jackpot, which totaled 34.4 million. Lottery spokeswoman Patti Sheenn said Monday. The other three winning tickets were held by Phoenix residents, Sheenn said.
