Their "stop McGovern" campaign a shambles, officials of the AFL-CIO talked wistfully of Sen. Henry M. Jackson But tew had any real pope that he could wrest the prize from the front-runner. Aides to AFL-CIO President George Meany said no decision on labor's role in the Nov. 7 election would be made until after the convention.

But they said it was likely the union federation would support neither President Nixon nor the Democratic challenger. I W. Abel, president of the United Steelworkers Union, Said today he felt McGovern had po chance of winning the election, Irked by Daley Rejection One has to wonder if they (McGovern's supporters) arent doing everything they can to deliberately lose, he said in a television interview, citing the convention vote to deny Chicago Mayor Richard Daley his seat Even a McGovern choice of a labor leader-as his running mate, Abel said, would have no real impact on labors distaste for McGovern -Union officials distnbuted a 23-page "white paper" condemning McGovern as a foe of the working man. The paper also criticized the South Dakota senators civil rights voting record and his stands on marijuana, amnesty for draft dodgers and political violence. Distribution of the paper, which the AFL-CIO said was prepared by Jacksons office, began while the nomination still was in doubt Statement Never Withdrawn The fact that it was not withdrawn after McGovern all but wrapped up the nomination served to heighten speculation that labor would withhold its traditional support for the Democratic Party.

It was far from certain just how big a hole labors defection woulcj leave in the McGovern campaign. Labor traditionally has provided much of the money and political manpower for Democratic candidates. This year the Democrats are critically short of money but McGovern so far ihas been able to produce his own campaign workers, and has shown amazing ability to raise funds Labor is not united against McGovern. The United Auto Workers Union headed by Leonard Woodcock, and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Workers led by Jerry Wurf, are expected to support McGovern with enthusiasm just completed the longest convention session on record- a weary, wordy 11 hours and four minutes working on the partys 1972 platform. At that moment, soft-spoken and mild-mannered Boris Spassky proved why he is the world champion in the noblest oPgames He immediately pounced on Fischers bishop left trapped after capturing one of the Russians pawns and thq game turned distinctly ip Spasskys favor.

Spassky asked for adjournment after 40 moves and 4 hours play. When the two resume the first game in their $250,000, 24-game world match, Spassky will have a bishop and three pawns against Fishers five pawns. Play was to resume today. Most experts assembled here seemed to agree that Spassky has a chance to win, while Fischer should be happy' if he salvages a draw. But why did the American chess genius go straight into what appeared to be a Russian trap? He took a chance to win a chance," said Danish grandmaster Jens Eneveoldsen will never know until Fischer tells us, if he does," said another international grandmaster.
