The jury in ths case of Samnel Johnson came into conrt at nine o'clock this morning and rendered a verdict of guilty of muraer in the first degree as indicted. Court Clerk.Klwood Wilson taking the indictment and standing in front of ths jury said: "Gsntlemen the jrry, how say yon, do yon find the prisoner Samnel Johnson, whom you have in charge, guilty in manner and form as he stands indicted, or not gnilty "Gnilty of anrder in first degree," answered ForBman Worrall as the andi- ence that'fillei the court room asvaitsd in breathless sileice. B. Robinson, coansel for the defense, asked that the jury be polled aad each jnror answered as did the foreman, adding at request-of the conrt, "ruilt IB the first degree." Ever since he has been in business S. J. Furlong has kept -the peanut branch of his store on the front pavement, the fresh roasted being kept ia a box so convenient for -passersby that nearly every male pedestrian has gotten into the habit of scooping up a peannt or two as he pauses.

This thing not only grew monotonous to the proprietor, but expensive, as upwards of a quart was pilfered every week. He bore patiently with the petty thieving for a long time, until. at last forbearance gave cut. Yesterday he put a screen over the peanuts. The covering fits close to tbe box and at first glance wonld not be "noticed.

Two or three dozen people didn't notice it, in fact, and dove down for the customary free lunch, to find their parpose frustrated. As the day wore the boys, to use their own language, "canght on to the fan," and stood by to watch developments. They didn't have long to wait between acts. While they a dudish leokiisg chap with smooth face, a smirkish smile and patent leather shoes minced along. He spied the peannte went down for a taste.

His caught the wire. "Whoopee, didn't get no peanuts, mister, did yelled a bey while the others ehooted in glee. The young man "tried to look cool and collected, bat his face indicated that he was warm and somewhat scattered: so smiled a sickly smile and passed on. "Why didn't yon take one, say mister!" was the query put at the next man. "Must be fond of free peannts," "Better go in and buy a few," "Simon don't give away his things- he keeps 'em to sell." These were a few of the provoking jibes ont by the irrepressible boys who hovered about the place.

It was noticed that a number of people had changed their opinieu of the prisoner's guilt, and persons who had faith in his innocence previously, wavered in their convictions and were disposed to believe that he was the man.

Atheery that found many advocates was that the man who first called at the Sharplesa homestead and enticed the Quaker farmer to the barn was and a colored-man assisted in committing the deed.
