After Johnson escaped from the prison ward in 1969, the Army said, he was returned to custody and sentenced three years at Ft Leavenworth in February, 1970, for assault fraud and es-' cape from previous confine-' ment. The assault charge was based on an attack on a Ft Benning hospital guard, the Army said. Fraud Charges -The fraud charges involved $7,458 the Army said. It contended that Johnson received at least part of that using false papers to receive higher pay than that to which he was entitled.

The Army said Johnson also was sentenced to dishonorable discharge and forfeiture of all -pay and allowances beginning Dec. 1, 1970. Johnson claimed he was awarded the Bronze Star and other, medals for bravery. But the Army said records show he received only the Nationals Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal and the Vietnam Campaign Medal, none of which is an award for valor. 234-year history of the service were sworn in Dec.
