House tumbles down First of five gubernatorial debates set Friday Davis holds lead in early poll The Associated Press SACRAMENTO Democratic Lt. Gov. Gray Davis holds a nine-point lead over Republican Attorney General Dan Lungren, according to the first independent poll of the governors race conducted since the primary. The poll by Mason-Dixon Politi-calMedia Research Inc.

showed Davis with 48 percent of the vote and Lungren with 39 percent. Thirteen percent of those asked were undecided, according to KCRA-TV in Sacramento, one of the news organizations that commissioned the survey. The station aired the results Wednesday evening. Mason-Dixon, based in Columbia, conducted the telephone survey of 832 registered California voters who said they regularly vote in state elections. The margin of error was plus or minus 3.5 percent.

BRIEFLY Newborn baby boy found dead in bin Wire reports SAN DIEGO Police searched for clues Wednesday to identify the mother of a newborn boy found dead in a gas station trash bin. Police said the infant, with his umbilical cord still attached, was found early Wednesday morning by a homeless man rummaging through the bin in an area near Lindbergh Field. The baby was wrapped in a blood-stained sheet, San Diego police Lt. Jim Collins said. The infant was left in the bin sometime after Tuesday morning, when the Dumpster was last emptied.

He appeared to be full-term, and likely was born sometime after Monday morning. Were not sure yet whether it was a stillborn or a live birth, Collins said. Los Angeles makes bid for convention LOS ANGELES Los Angeles made a $35.3 million bid to bring the Democratic National Convention to the city in 2000, wooing the Democrats site selection committee with a slew of angels that delivered the citys proposal on CD-ROMs. Id be less than candid with you if I said the presentations were, well, impressive is an understatement, site selection committee member James King of Connecticut said Tuesday after the presentation. Youve got real pros here.

Los Angeles is one of seven cities hoping to snag the Democratic National Convention, which is expected to pump $137 million into the local economy from an expected 30,000 visitors. The six other cities submitting bids are Boston, Philadelphia, Denver, Miami, Minneapolis and New Orleans. The committee will make its recommendation Nov. 12 to the Democratic National Committee. Vice President A1 Gore, the partys senior official once President Clinton completes his tenure, is expected to make the final selection.

On Tuesday, persons dressed as angels delivered CD-ROMs to the 52 committee members containing Los Angeles 96-page proposal on logistics and staffing. A private group known as LA2000 would be responsible for most local costs, but the city would chip in for police and transportation services valued at more than $6 million plus. The Associated Press SACRAMENTO In their first head-to-head debate Friday, Dan Lun-gren and Gray Davis are seeking to distinguish themselves for voters who see little more than two white male career politicians running for California governor. They are aiming for voters like David Beider, a 41 -year old certified public accountant in Los Angeles. For Beider, any distinctions between Davis and Lungren remain more blurry than sharp.

Theyre probably not that far apart on a lot of the issues, Beider said Wednesday. Im the type who would cross party lines if theres a good reason to, he added. Beider, who declined to state his party affiliation, said he plans to tune in Friday evening to find out where the candidates differ on the issues. For Republican Lungren and Democrat Davis, choosing what issues to talk about at the San Diego debate will be a crucial first attempt at drawing contrasts and staking out their turf. Thats what debates are all about, and there are differences between these two candidates different personalities, styles, characters and backgrounds, and different visions.

They have different outlooks politically, said Lungren campaign manager Dave Puglia. Lungren will stress four issues: education, crime, taxes and the health of the economy, he said. Californias parents are in no mood to maintain the status quo in public education, and Dan Lungren is someone who promises a real shakeup of the status quo, Puglia said. Davis is someone who has to defend the education establishment, though hell try do it artfully, in a way that (conceals) his alliances. Daviss record is largely blank or on the wrong side of crime issues, he said, and while Lungren supports slashing the Vehicle License Fee, Davis favors a smaller tax cut, with more of the states budget surplus The Associated Press Workers level the former home of football star O.J.

Simpson Wednesday morning in Brentwood. New owner flattens former Simpson estate going to schools. Lungren will also emphasize his California roots, and illustrate that he can relate to issues facing families, Puglia said. Davis was bom in the Bronx, N.Y., and has no children. Davis will try to keep the focus on environment, abortion rights and guns.

The alternative is Dan Lungren, who really doesnt have an education program, who supports offshore oil drilling, who is out of synch with Californians on the issue of choice, and who, according to a judge last week, broke the law by not enforcing Californias assault weapon ban, said Davis campaign spokemsan Michael Bustamante. In fact, Lungren supports President Clintons order extending a federal ban on oil drilling off most of the U.S. coastline until 2012. He opposes abortion in most cases. 2003.

The subs will be retired after the Labor Day weekend, Disneyland announced Wednesday. Submarine Voyage has served Disneyland and our guest proudly for LUNGREN DAVIS On assault weapons, Bustamante was referring to a Superior Court judges decision July 22 that Lungren violated the deadline of Californias assault weapons law by allowing more than 16,000 semiautomatic handguns, rifles and shotguns to be registered after March 1992. The debate will be the first time Californians see the two major candidates facing off one-on-one. Lungren, the attorney general, and Davis, the lieutenant governor, appeared together at two debates during the primary, but were joined by Democrats A1 Checchi and Jane Harman. While those debates took place amid a political advertising blitz, Fridays face-off comes in a comparative vacuum.

The candidates have been crisscrossing the state for fund-raising and early stumping, but have not received widespread news media coverage since the June primary. They have not yet aired TV commercials. Fridays debate will also mark an exceptionally early start to the gubernatorial general election campaign. Gov. Pete W'ilson and Democratic challenger Kathleen Brown met just once in the 1994 campaign, in October.

Davis and Lungren plan five debates before Nov. 3. Prospects appeared bright that a large number of Californians would be able to see this one live. Nine TV stations or cable systems and three radio stations have committed to airing it live in its entirety, said Vic Biondi, coordinator for the debates. In addition, seven TV stations and one radio station will delay broadcast the forum.
