I B-10 THE DAILY SUN Friday, Dec. 23, 1960 with the 1 Frick Predicts New Expansion NEW YORK (AP) Major league baseball could expand to 21 teams and perhaps three leagues by. 196 1 with further changes as close as 1962, Commissioner Ford Davis Cup Is Up for Grabs Next Monday U.S. Conquerors Are 'Keen Again' For Final Round By WILL GRIMSLEY If you have a fisherman in the family, it's not too late to buy him a handy little 1961 fishing license gift -i to tuck under the tree Christmas morning. He'll need Frick predicts, You know how these baseball fellows are." the commissioner was quoted by Dick Young of the Daily News in today's editions.

"It takes them a long time to get moving, but when they do, they want to keep moving. "The only thing I'm afraid of is they may try to do it too fast." Frick said he personally favors future expansion that will get away from the 10-club setup the American League will have next year and the National League in 1962 when New York and Houston are taken in. TWO OBJECTIONS Under a 10-club setup there are two objections he believes: 1, the idea of teams finishing ninth and tenth, and 2, a 162-game schedule which destroys the long-time record structure based on 154 games. Expansion to 24 teams by 1962 either as three eight-team leagues or with two 12-team leagues split into six team divisions, he pointed out, could mean a return to season schedule. Frick said he had heard the American League has a faction which favors expansion to two Six-team leagues in 1962.

AL GOES TO 10 "The two leagues might expand separately again," the commissioner said, "but they won't 4o it again without consulting the other league. There'll be no more of' this running off in a corner to steal a march." The AL goes to 10 clubs next season with new franchises in Washington and Los Angeles and the old Washington Senators switched to Minneapolis-St. Paul. The NL becomes a 10-club circuit the following year. 1 xr" '7 San Diego County, this picture held true for all of the Southland.

31, 1961. A license is required for all ang-, lers 16 years of age or older. -To purchase a resident angeling license a person must have resided continuously in California for six months immediately prior to the date the license 3s purchased. An exception is 1 that any member of the Armed 'Forces on active duty qualifies ''as a resident Californian as far angling license purposes are "concerned. 'As prescribed by the State Legislature, a basic resident 1961 sportfishing license, valid only for fishing in ocean waters and for taking frogs, will cost $3.

By purchasing a $1 license stamp and affixing it to the $3 license the angler may take all species of fish except trout, but including steelhead. By purchasing two $1 license stamps and affixing them to the basic $3 license, at a total cost of $5, the angler may take all species of fish including trout. Also available are a special 51, three-day ocean fishing license for either resident or nonresident anglers; a special $3, 10-day ocean fishing license for non-residents, to which the $1 freshwater fishing stamps may be added; and a $10, year-long non-resident ocean fishing license to which the freshwater stamps may be added. The 1960 State of Arizona $2 Colorado River tishing stamp also expires Dec. 31, and the 1961 Arizona stamps are now available from all California license agents who handled them during the past year.

An Arizona special use stamp must be pasted on a California angling license being used to fish from a boat or other floating device on the Colorado River or its backwaters where the river forms a mutual boundary between California and Arizona. With a basic $3 California license, a $1 California license stamp and a $2 Arizona special use stamp, Californians may fish any part or either shore of the Colorado River and its backwaters between California and Arizona, and may enter or leave the river through either state. Californians fishing for trout In the Colorado River must have two of California's' 51 fishing stamps on their basic 53 license. Under terms of a reciprocal agreement, California sells a $2 special use stamp to licensed Arizona anglers which permits them to fish the California side of the river. A California angler does not need the $2 Arizona use permit as long as he remains on the California bank and does not embark from shore.

Pigeon Season The hunting season on band-tailed pigeons, which runs through Jan. got off to a very slow start last weekend in Southern California. Jack's story went like this: "We were having a and Lane rushed in and began firing caustic questions at me.

"The layoff because of the rain may have been just what they needed," Caepele said after a double workout on the White City courts. "They were in danger of playing too much tennis. Now they are keen again." The Australians, who flew in from Brisbane, worked out on the center court enclosure during the early part of the afternoon and were followed by the Italians.

Be cause of heavy rains the past week, the Italians drilled at Mel bourne and the home team at Brisbane. SPY AND COUNTERSPY Both sides spied on each other yesterday but saw nothing to comfort them regarding the Davis Cup challenge round beginning Monday. Neale Fraser, Australia's Wim bledon champion who earlier was hobbled with a swollen leg mus cle, showed no traces of injury as he defeated professional Ken Rosewall impressively 6-3, 6-3. Rod Laver, the other Australian singles player, had a stiff workout with Roy Emerson. "I am not completely happy over Laver's form, but I think he will be ready by Cup time," said Australian Captain Harry Hop- man.

COURT SLOWER The Italian captain said he be lieyed the court would be slower than that at Perth where the U.S. matches were played and this should work to the advantage of his team. "I would not want to see the match on the fastest court in the world," he said. Sirola was particularly impres sive in a session with left-handed Australian pro Mervyn Rose. Pie-trangeli played against left-hand ed Jaroslav Drobny, Italian coach and later the Italians squared off for brisk doubles practice.

S1 BONDED LINING 2 139 better than the seasonal average for the 1955-59 period. In 1959, hunters killed 551 deer in the county.

The five-year average bag from 1955 through 1959 is 646 deer. Riverside County's 1960 deer kill showed a drop from 1959. Hunters bagged 474 deer during the 1960 season as compared to 508 last year. Statewise, California hunters bagged a total of 75,584 bucks this year, just 18 fewer than the record kill of 1954, according to figures compiled by the Department of Fish and Game. The report does not include deer taken in special antlerlcss or either-sex hunts.

They won't be tabulated until next month. The figure makes 1960 California's second best year for deer hunters. The previous second best was just last year, when hunters bagged 73,483 bucks. The kill was down in general on the eastern slope of the Siena. The department traced this to record kills last year coupled with drought conditions last winter which resulted in less carryover.

Success was better than usual in most other areas, however. Wister Geese The Department of Fish and Game's Wister public hunting area in Imperial Valley produced its best goose hunting in years last weekend, just in time to provide the main course for a lot of Christmas dinners. Hunters are reminded that last Sunday was the final day of the Canada goose season in the Coachella Imperial Salton Sea area and along the Colorado-River. In those same areas, however, the season on geese other than Canada geese and their subspecies continues through Jan. 8, the end of the waterfowl season statewide.
