A Valparaiso trucking firm opera tor and former Indiana state senator, Landgrebe won Tues day's -balloting -with Halleck's endorsement but without active support irom the incumbent congressman. Erwin Loses Race -Halleck had been unofficially groomingWill Erwin Kosci- uszko County Republican, as his successor. But redistricting in Indiana last spring put Erwin into the 3rd District where he failed Tuesday to unseat incum bent Democratic John Brade- mas.

Meanwhile Landgrebe appar ently had all the help he needed. With 99 per cent of the district's precincts reporting, Landgrebe had received 104,171 votes to Kelly's 84,581, The" "Valparaiso" Republican campaigned on a platform that called for fiscal responsibility to combat inflation and the rising national debt. He also said the Vietnam -War was the most important issue -of the election and once stated that Congress should stay in session until a solution to the conflict is found. Landgrebe is a strong propo nent for "law and order" and repeatedly criticized agitators as able-bodied bums" and the U.S. Supreme Court-for- interferring in the area of law enforcement.

Political Newcomer Kelly, a Lafayette attorney, is a political newcomer. The 35-year-old bachelor has been said to be a 'Kennedy type" in his appearance and mannerisms.
