Bulldogs hold off Hurons Associated Press Mark Barsotti ran 33 yards for a touchdown and passed tor a career-high 281 yards Saturday, leading Fresno State to a 41-10 rout of Western Michigan. Barsotti also had a 6-yard scoring run and threw a 56-yard scoring pass to Malcolm Seabron that broke -the game open in the third period. The Hurons took a 10-7 lead in the second quarter on Shane Jacksons quarterback sneak but were unable to score again.

Lemoore High School product Lorenzo Neal gave FSU the lead for good on a 1-yard touchdown run in the waning seconds of the first half. Barsotti, who completed 22 of his 33 passing attempts, padded the FSU lead when he took off on a bootleg to his left and raced 33 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter. Brian Rowe, formerly of Tulare Western, saw his first action at FSU during the fourth quarter. Rowe barely overthrew the intended receiver in the end zone after rolling to his right on a third-down play in the final period. Aaron Craver rushed for 99 yards and scored a touchdown for the Bulldogs, who extended their home winning streak to 17 games.

Other games While Fresno State cruised to an easy victory Saturday, other Big West Conference teams had a rough time of it in their season openers. George Allen, coaching his first college game in 34 years, saw his Long Beach State team pulverized by No. 10 Clemson, 59-0. The Tigers limited Long Beach to 57 yards overall, minus-16 on the ground. This is a new experience for me, said Allen, who never had a losing record in 14 years as a head coach in pro football.

I dont recall a loss like this. I hope I dont have to recall many more of them. Pacific, meanwhile, had similar problems against No. 8 Tennessee. The Volunteers scored 31 points in the first quarter Saturday, as Chuck Webb scored on runs of 9 and 52 yards.

In other games involving ranked teams, No. 13 Texas woe 28-13 at Hawaii, No. 15 Virginia crushed Kansas 59-10, No. 16 BYU got by Texas-El Paso 30-10 and No. 18 Pittsburgh beat Ohio 35-3.

No. 7 Nebraska had perhaps the most difficult time, beating unranked Baylor 13-0. The Bears were thinking upset at Lincoln, when they drove to a first down inside the Comhuskers 15-yard line in the fourth quarter. But Frankie Smith fumbled at the 5 after a hit by linebacker Pat Tyrance, and Nebraskas Travis Hill recovered at the 3. The defense has got to be the strong point of our team, particularly early, and they saved our bacon tonight, Nebraska head coach Tom Osborne said.

Nebraska did not score a touchdown until Scott Baldwin went in from 2 yards out with 22 seconds left in the game. Dodgers shake Oaks Shutout gives Bakersfield 2-1 lead in playoffs By Aaron Sanfilippo Advance-Register All pitchers and catchers have been taught to work as a team, but nobody ever said they had to do all the work. That is, however, just about what happened Sunday in Visalia, when the Bakersfield Dodgers pounded the Visalia Oaks 8-0 to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five California League Southern Division playoffs. Dodger pitcher Pedro Astacio threw a nine-inning shutout, while Dodger catcher Bryan Baar went 3-for-5 and drove in five runs with a pair of home runs. It was just one of those nights, said Baar.

"Tonight was mine and Pedro Astacios night. He really took a lot of pressure of the hitters by pitching so well. You cant pitch much better than he did tonight. The Dodgers jumped out to an early lead when Baar led off the second inning with a solo home run deep to left field. From then on, Bakersfield didn't look back.

While Astacio was busy fanning Oaks batters, the Dodger offense was shifting into high gear. Bakersfield picked up runs in the third and fourth innings to build a 3-0 lead. Then, when struggling Visalia pitcher A1 Newman loaded the bases with no outs in the fifth inning, Visalia manager Scott Ullger decided to go to the bullpen for help. Reliever Fred White checked into the game to face Baar. After slipping a curveball past Baar for a strike, White looked as though he might get Visalia out of a tough situation.

But Baar ripped Whites next pitch over the left field wall for a grand slam to put the Dodgers comfortably ahead 7-0. The only other run of the game came in the top of the ninth when Visalia reliever Chad Swanson walked in a run. According to Ullger, Astacio turned in a major league performance on the mound. That was an excellent pitching performance by their guy Astacio. The way he pitched tonight, he probably could have beaten the Minnesota Twins.

I tip my hat to that kid, he said. Although the Oaks recorded nine hits on the night, no Visalia baserunner got as far as third base. We got something like eight hits, but we couldnt do anything with them. Wed get a hit here, and then a double play there. We really stretched them out, said Ullger.

J.T. Bruett, Bob McCreary and Jay Kvasnicka had two hits apiece for Visalia. Being down 2-1 in the series, the Oaks must win two in row in Bakersfield to advance to the league championship series. Were going to have to tighten our belts. We have to win two in a row, but it can be done, said Ullger.

Were going to need a strong pitching performance tomorrow in Bakersfield. With the Oaks losing two out of three at home. Dodger manager Tom Beyers pointed out that there hasn't been a home-field advantage so far in the playoffs. The home field has meant absolutely nothing so far, he said. Weve played well on their field, and theyve played well on ours.

Right now, our kids just have to keep doing what theyve been doing so far. The Oaks, who lost the series opener on Friday, had evened the series with a 3-2 victory on Saturday. Mike Trombley pitched eight-plus innings of six-hit ball, and Marc Lipson finished up for the save. Trombley struck out eight and walked three. Bruett singled home two runs in a three-run fifth inning to spark the Oaks.

Pat Mahomes (11-11) is scheduled to take the mound for Visalia tonight against Bakersfield's John Knapp (82). The game is slated for 7 30 p.m. at Sam Lynn Park. Fahnhorst came to the 49ers as a free agent in 1984. Last season he started the first seven games before injuring his right foot against New England in week eight and spending the remainder of the season on injured reserve. I'm not ready to retire, so I guess I'll go home and sit by the phone," added Fahnhorst. Wright conceded that he had been asked to retire or accept an injury settlement.

He said his plans at the moment were still up in the air. In other matters, nose tackle Michael Carter underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Saturday at Sequoia Hospital. Gallagher wins GMO in playoff FRANKLIN, Wis. (AP) Jim Gallagher rolled in an 8-footer for par on the first playoff hole Sunday and won the Greater Milwaukee Open. Ed Dougherty and Billy Mayfair missed putts to tie.

The three finished tied at 17-under 271 after Mayfair shot a 68, with Dougherty and Gallagher carding 66s. But Gallagher, who got his first tour victory, teed off first in the playoff on the par-3 17th hole and was the only one of the trio to reach the green.
