I also would like to add that at the time Mr. Anderson upbraided me in the Evansville Press, "both South Bend schools" had not been defeated. One of the three had, but not "both of them. When one South Bend school meets another South Bend school.

It becomes either a case of one getting licked or the score ending in a tie. Riley has taken Its only licking of the season from Washington, Central took Its first licking of the season from Riley Friday night and Washington hasnt been licked yet. I trust this answers Mr. Anderson's question, "If they are so good why are they defeated which dogged their earlier starts. All members of the squad are in MID-WEEK HANDICAP.

Coach Bernard Witucki informs me that he wrote all of the Indianapolis and Evansville schools for games, but failed to get any of them on his calendar. Coach Witucki also tried to book Peru for a post-eeason contest, but; failed.

I trust this answers Mr. Anderson's question, "And if the South Bend clubs can do what Mr. Gallup says they can, why didn't they book few of the tough teams he mentions?" 3 HISTORICAL FACTS are the things which prompt me to rate northern Indiana football head and shoulders above that played in the central and southern sectors. Call them flimsy reasons, jifyou will, but here they are.Sln 1921 Shortridge, of Indianapolis, had a great team In its own back yard. It went through its regular season undefeated and unscored upon thoroughly mopping up the field in and around Indianapolis.

Froebel, jof Gary, did likewise up here in the dune country. Sullivan jdid likewise in southern Indiana. Froebel invited Sullivan to participate in a post-season game for the championship. Sullivan jat first accepted, but declined on second thought, deciding, as The South Bend Tribune put' "That caution was the better part of valor. Froebel then challenged Shortridge, which did not believe in caution and accepted.

Shortridge was beaten, 70-0. Harry Koss, Riley's line coach, played on that Indianapolis team which went down so In 1931 Shortridge again decided to brave the fwinds from the north, and Invaded South Bend for a game with Central. Central beat Shortridge, 39-0. In 1926 Central beat Indianapolis Tech, 21-0. In 1927 the Bears beat the Techs, 26-2, and In 1928 beat them, 12-6.

Back in 1924 Elkhart won all of fits regularly-scheduled games in; the northern sector, while Bicknell cleaned up approximately everything in the southwestern" corner. A post-season game was arranged. Elkhart spotted Bicknell a touchdown in the first few minutes of play and then went on to whip the southerners, 28-6. Then for your modern records there is that 40-6 victory Whiting ran up on Evansville Central recently. Whiting is one of our weaker western' division teams in the Northern Indiana High School conference! this year.

SUPPORTERS OF SOUTHERN Indiana football are going to say that myj arguments are too dated, that this is 1937 and that it is not fair to compare present teams on the basis of other teams performances in-he past.

My answer is simply that until your southern clubs will pfry our northenr ones what else have we to influence our judgment- Berhaps Mr. Anderson can give me a reason or two for rating southern ball the highest. i FOLLOWING RJJLEYS amazing, 227, victory over Central Friday night many who did, not see' the game approached me with the question: "What happened? How did Riley ever happen to run! up a score like that? Was Riley that much better -than Central" My answerris this: Riley was 15 points better than Central FRIDAY' NIGHT; because Riley made no mistakes to speak of and Central, faad plenty. Call Riley lucky if you but the idea In football is not to make mistakes which set the other team up for a score. Central Quarterback Tom (Mush) Augustine set RU up for a field goal and a touchdown by fumbling two punts deep in his own territory.

Central Quarterback Joe Nimeth set Riley up for another touchdown by calling a pass on his own 10-yard line. The pass was taken by Johnny Pallatin, Riley guard, who 'promptly converted it Into a. Wildcat touchdown. Quarterback Dick Good, who, goes into my private diary as one of the smartest signal callers in northern Indiana, fumbled no punts he did not recover and called no passes Inside his 25-yard line. Add to that Halfback Vic Tomasltz? superior punting and the fact that the whole Riley team has a winning attitude un-surpassed In this neck of the woods, and you have the answer to Friday night's score.

If you wish to3 insist that Riley was lucky Friday night, you 11 also have to insist that Washington put in play on the Pittsburgh 30r Gmitro Goes Over.
