Pottstown Mercury SPORTf Drizzly Weather Washes Out Area Schedules PAGE TWELVE TUESDAY, APRIL 21, 1 BRUCE CARTER Around the Town Most Celebrated 880 Specialist Doing OK By WARREN Mercury Spnrfa fditnr) THERE WERE ONLY a eouplp of lines down the ajratp summaries of last Saturday's Kansas Relays al explaining that Texas Southern university had won the collrtre division two- mile relay, and that Bruce Carter had run the leadoff 880 lop. It was hardly an earth shattering event even concerning the Kansas Relays themselves. Not in the wake of such efforts as those of Robin Lingle, who was named the outstanding athlete after running 4 .0 and 1 :49.9 mile and 880 lops on two mile and dis tance medley winning teams. Rut to followers of Pottstown High track, it had a special meaning. The most celebrated runner ever, is making good.

It entirely unexpected, because to those who knew Carter during his days at Pottstown so long ago considering that he graduated last it was an accepted fact that if grit and determination were all it took to make good, surely he would make it. And to Ray Feick, who is probably biggest booster and closest confidant, it means even more, because it was largely through efforts that Carter hied himself off to Texas. HOPED FOR SCHOOL CLOSER TO HOME THERE WERE THOSE among the Trojan fandom. of course, who had hoped that he would pick a school closer to home. Their motives were jealous ones, but could hardly be construed as jealousy.

It was merely that in an Eastern school, they could follow his career more closely. There were rumors that he was choosing between Villanova, probably the premier track school at the present, and Texas Southern, but was the assistant track coach at Pott, town High until last it so. was never a firm offer from said Feick, who now teaches at Moravian college. he added I think much rather see him down there (Texas Southern) than Villanova, anyway. can graduate from said Feick at the Montgomery county meet two weeks and perhaps come back to teach in this system, which would really be a good thing.

Maybe he could even be a coach here This may sound like some long range planning, but in all probability, Feick and who correspond talked the whole thing over and nothing beats long range planning. if it can be followed. ONE A CAREER OF COURSE, ONE race does not a career make, not even a season, and Carter is only a Freshman. Rut Feick noted at that talk of a fortnight ago. that Carter had already run a somewhat spectacular 880, though memory dulls as to whether or not he has broken 1:50.

It is contention, however, that spindly legs will carry him just as far as he wants to go, and that he wants to go far. Like another celebrated Josh Culbreath, Carter is one of those rare types who thrive on work. sometimes have to slow him says Morrie (Irigg, the athletic director. never have to call him twice to For all this determination, however, it took Heeb Meyers, the head coach, to put Carter in his proper niche. It is contention, and doubtless proper (the results speak) that Carter too light for a as he had been prior to his High school days.

NOT STRONGEST IN THAT CARTER RAN the leadoff leg probably also means that probably not the strongest half miler at Texas Southern (these are usually reserved for anchor legs). Rut, as mentioned before, only a Freshman. The next big competition on the Texas Southern calendar is the Drake relays, at Des Moines. Iowa, which will be run this weekend, or the same date as the Penn relays. It is possible that Carter be seen in these parts until the AAU championships (should he qualify) this Summer at Randalls Island, since this is an Olympic year as well as the year of the fair in New York.
