In class one, for department stores general merchandise, Robertson Bros.

Department Store, 211 South Michigan street, and the J. C. Penney, store, 220 South Michigan street, were tied for first with the George Wyman store, 103 North Michigan street, in third place. Winners in class two, for apparel, specialty and shoe shops, were the Frances shop, 129 North Michigan street, and Worth's, 127 North Michigan street, tied for first; and Greene's, 223 South Michigan street, third. First in Class Three.

First in class three, for furniture, hardware, electrical goods and kindred merchandise, was Garnitz Furniture company, 128 South Michigan street. Shidler 110 North Michigan was second and Ries Furniture company, South Lafayette boulevard, third. Two were tied for first in class four, for men's and boys' clothing and furnishings. They were the Max Adler company, 102 South Michigan street, and Gilbert's Men's Outfitters, 813 South Michigan street. Samuel Spiro 121 South Michigan street, was third.

Class five winners were tine Dainty Maid Bake shop, 123 South Michigan street, first; Recreation Equipment company, 113 North Main street, second, and Krauss Jewelry store, 207 North Michigan street, third. Bonds and Stamps Given. The sweepstakes prize was $100 in war savings stamps and bonds. War bonds and stamps totaling $25 were given for the first. prize in five divisions of competition; for second place this in each division and $10 for third place.

Judges were Chief Machinist's Mate Garvin Keith, of the navy recruiting office; Sergt. Kenneth Murphy, marines recruiting office; Staff Sergt. Robert H. Brown, army recruiting office; Miss Barbara Keller, First Bank Trust company, and Marcel E. McLaughlin, of Elkhart, Ind.

Attorney Howard F. Corcoran at the opening of the federal. court trial of 25 former national and district leaders of the bund accused of conspiracy to counsel members to evade the draft law. One of the 25 is Ferdinand Callsen, former South Bend bund leader who operated a grocery at 1022 Eouth 35th street in South Bend. Kunze, sentenced recently at Hartford, to 15 years in prison as spy, also is one of the defendants in the current trial.

Corcoran charged that the bund opposed the draft law before its passage and made its feelings known through its. official news. paper, Free America, at membership meetings by word cot mouth.
