4 Bubbles sparks new drive LOS ANGELES Students at Van Nuys Junior High School said rumors that they want to change the schools name are true. A petition is circulating around school and neighborhoods asking that the school board rename the facility Bubbles Junior High. Bubbles was the hippopotamus that escaped from Lion Country Safari earlier this month and died after being shot with tranquilizers. MOSCOW (UPI) The Soviet Unions two Soyuz 26 cosmonauts returned to Earth today, ending their record 96-day mission in space. The official Soviet news agency Tass announced, The 96-day space manned flight the longest one in the history of cosmonautics is over.

Soviet cosmonauts Yuri Romanenko and Georgy Grechko came back to Earth today, Tass added. Tass said the Soyuz space capsule landed safely at 2:19 (3:19 a.m. PST) in the spaceflight recovery zone in Soviet Central Asia. The Soviet agency said the capsule made a parachute-assisted soft landing 164 miles west of the Kazakhstan city of Tselinograd. The preliminary medical examination of the cosmonauts made on the landing site immediately after the soft landing of the descent vehicle has shown that the cosmonauts have endured well the long orbital flight, Tass said.

Before Romanenko and Grechko concluded their mission, Soviet doctors put them on a special physical exercises regimen to strengthen their bodies for the return to Earths gravity after so long in the weightlessness of space. Grechko, 46, now holds the record of more time in space than any other human. When the 96-day Soyuz 26 mission is added to the 30 days Grechko spent in space aboard Soyuz 17 his personal time in orbit stretches to 126 days. Although the Salyut space lab was shut down and unmanned with the departure of Romanenko and Grechko, the Soviets have Stromised that more Soyuz missions some eaturing East European cosmonauts would be mounted to the space lab this year. Before undocking from the Salyut 6 space lab, which was their home for more than three months, the two cosmonauts mothballed the station and switched it over to automatic control.

On March 4, Romanenko and Grechko broke the 84-day manned spaceflight endurance record set in 1974 by the American Skylab 4 astronauts. Their long mission aboard Salyut 6 has been hailed by Soviet space experts as one of the most successful and historic in 20 years of the Soviet space program. Romanenko and Grechko were launched into space Dec. 10, 1977, and boarded the Salyut station the following day. During the course of their mission, two other manned Soyuz space capsules linked up with Salyut station for periods of one week each and the Soviets sent up an unmanned robot supply capsule, Progress 1, to resupply the station.

The docking of Soyuz 27 with the station on Jan. 11 was the first double docking in space history. And on March 3, the Soyuz 28 space capsule, carrying the first non-Soviet and non-American ever to fly in space, Czech cosmonaut Vladimir Remek, also docked with Salyut.
