a The South Bend Tribune, Sunday, March 9, 1958, WESTERN MICHIGAN UPSETS NOTRE DAME IN I CCC TRACK DEPTH BOOSTS BRONCOS TEAM Cote, VandenBerg Conference Records. BY TOM Tribune Special Writer. KALAMAZOO, Mich. Western Michigan ended Notre Dame's four-year supremacy in the. Central Collegiate Conference indoor track meet here last night by edging the Irish 50.

Marquette finished a strong third with points. Notre Dame won more first places, six, then the Broncos, three, but the latter's depth in the running events proved the margin. Ten new records were set in the meet, most of. them fieldhouse marks, but the Western Michigan site opened this year. Jack Cote of South Bend, Irish field man, set a new Notre.

Dame indoor mark in the broad jump with a leap of 24 feet. This was also a fieldhouse mark, Cote previously set the mark at 23. feet inches for the Irish in 1956. Notre Dame half-miler Dale Vander Berg -established new conference mark when he ran the 880-yard run in 1:52.5. VandenBerg also anchored the victorious Irish mile relay team.

Mary's ball-control game midway the first half Saturday night and stormed past the, Indians 74-58 for its fourth consecutive Southern Conference basketball championship. It was the 36th straight conference victory for the Mountaineers over a three-season span and sent them into first-round NCAA playoff meeting with Manhattan in New York Tuesday.

William and Mary, which had sprung two upsets to reach the title finals stayed West Virginia for the first 10 minutes. The beginning of the end came for the Indians with 4:45 left before the intermission. West Virginia led 20-18. William and Mary went the rest of the half with one field goal and West Virginia, getting quick scoring by Lloyd Shar. rar, Jody Gardner, Jerry West and Willie Akers, spurted to a 32- 22 lead.

In the second half the Indians never got closer than eight points, at 39-31, despite some heroic work by All -Southern forward Roy Lange. West Virginia gradually pulled away and once stretched wits advantage tor Lange, with 19. points, was the game's high scorer: Joedy Gardner led West Virginia with 16 but Bob Smith added 14 for the Mounties and Sharrard had 12.
