Bystrom and Gullickson turned in impressive performances Sunday in leading their clubs to victory and keeping the race very tight. Bystrom pitched seven scoreless innings before leaving the game with a sore foot in helping the Phillies to an 8-4 triumph over the St. Louis Cardinals and Gullickson blanked the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-0 on three hits. The Expos lead the Phillies by only one game in the N.L. East.

A A v- i wW4' V4 9s'XPi 4C rally to beat Cards CINCINNATI (UPI) -Jerry Reuss keeps beating contending teams and thats why Los Angeles manager Tommy Lasorda thinks the 6-foot-5 lefty deserves the Cy Young Award over Philadelphias Steve Carlton. Carltons got 22 wins, but Reuss is 11-1 against contenders, points out Lasorda. That makes him so important.

Hes definitely got to be the Cy Young Award winner. The former Pittsburgh ace picked up his latest win over a contender Sunday pitching a brilliant five-hitter in the Dodgers 3-1 victory over Cincinnati. Reuss' work permitted Los Angeles to sweep the three-game series against the Reds the first time the Dodgers have ever svyept a three-game set in Riverfront Stadium. The victory kept L.A. atop the National League West standings and dropped Cincinnati 5 12 games back.

Reuss surrendered a couple of hits and a run in the first inning Sunday, but was extraordinarily tough the rest of the way yielding only three hits the next eight innings. Meanwhile, Rick Monday supplied all the hitting the Dodgers needed a two-run homer in the second inning and a run-producing single in the fourth. All the runs came off Reds starter and loser Paul Moskau, 9-7. In Houston, Astros manager Bill Virdon was happy with Terry Puhl. San Francisco Giants right-hander John Mon-tefusco only lasted 1 23 innings and Virdon found himself with Puhl and other left-handed hitting part-time starters Denny Wahling, Allan Ashby and Craig Reynolds facing a succession of left-handed relievers.

Puhl delivered a triple and a double, and he scored both times in the late innings to provide the Astros their margin of victory in a 6-4 win. The victory gave the Astros a sweep of the three-game series. As an indication of the kind of race it's been during the past month, the Astros have won 22 of their last 28 games Jeff Evans, but have lost ground to the Dodgers. The Giants managed only one hit through five innings but then tallied on sixthinning RBI singles by Rich Murray and Rennie Stennett and on Terry Whitfields home run in the eighth inning. Louis Cardinals. The play of another man made it all possible Sunday and that man is Paul Hofer, probably the most underrated running back in the NFL. The Cardinals, beaten by the New York Giants the week before and wondering now what they have to do to win a game, had a 21-14 lead when they kicked off to the 49ers with 1:51 left to play. The way their defense had handled the 49ers to that point, it seemed victory was sight, but it was not to be. San Francisco quarterback Steve DeBerg, wired for sound because he was unable to speak above a whisper, suddenly had no trouble making the right calls and making certain they were heard.

In nine plays, he took the 49ers 80 yards to create a 21-21 tie and send the game into overtime. Four minutes into the overtime, after the Cardinals failed to move the ball in three plays, DeBerg passed 15 yards to the ever available llofer and nine to 49ers 1 Scoring snatch Eason Ramson. Then Hofer busted free for 18 yards and, on fourth down, with the ball squarely in front of the uprights, Wersching booted a field goal as San Francisco ran off the field with its second victory in as many starts this year. Elsewhere, Gary Danielsons performance Sunday was above and beyond the call of duty. Danielson not only had to face the physical abuse an NFL quarterback receives during a game but he also had to deal with the mental anxiety of knowing his infant daughter had died of a heart ailment just a few days ago.

But courage is something that has been Danielsons San Diego's John Jefferson makes a leaping one-handed catch of a Dan Fouts 4-yard touchdown pass during the Chargers' 30-24 overtime win over Oakland Sunday. Jefferson later scored the game winning touchdown. Birds waste Murray HRs Six-goal games in soccer trademark throughout his pro career, and on Sunday, Danielson turned in another courageous performance, helping the Lions to a 29-7 victory over the Green Bay Packers. Steelers 20, Colts 17 Terry Bradshaw passed for 282 yards and two TDs, including a fourth period 32-yard scoring pass to Jim Smith, and Donnie Shell made a key interception to rally Pittsburgh past Baltimore. Bradshaws TD pass to Smith with 13:17 left erased a 17-13 deficit.

In the boys 9-10 National Division, Rayvell Snowdens r. By UPI Eddie Murray never got a chance to enjoy one of his best days in the big leagues.

I cant be happy about losing," said Murray, who hit three home runs in Baltimore's 4-3, 13-inning 1 ss to the Toronto Blue Jays. "Right now the Yankees have to lose for us to have a chance and they aren't losing." The Yankees defeated Boston 5-3 to move five games ahead of the defending A.L. champs with 19 games to play for both teams. Murrays third home run of the game his 29th of the season put the Orioles ahead 3-2 in the 11th, but the Blue Jays tied the score in their half on a one-out double by Lloyd Moseby and an error by rookie shortstop Bob Bonner. Bonner was in the game because Orioles manager Earl Weaver had mi V'l 4 UPI telephoto pinch hit for his two ether shortstops, Mark Belanger and Kiko Garcia.

Murray tied the game 2-2 with a ninth-inning homer. He also connected in the fourth to tie it 1-1. Moseby led off the 13th off Dennis Martinez, 5-4, with a single. Barry Bunnell sacrificed and Steve Braun was walked intentionally. Bob Bailor followed with a single to make a winner of Mike Barlow, 3-1.

In Boston, Bucky Dent and Aurelio Rodriguez clouted two-run homers and Eric Soderholm added a pmch-hit solo shot for the Yankees. The victory completed a four-game sw eep of the Red Sox that was reminiscent of the pivotal series that spurred the Yankees to the pennant in 1978. Royals 4, As3 Pete Utfocks first home run of the season helped Kansas City reduce its magic number for clinching the West title to two. George Brett, the major leagues' leading hitter with a .396 average, sat out his eighth straight game with a sore hand. Dan Quis'mberry earned his 33rd save.
