Thompson, Rich Cop Section IV Titles; Districts Saturday Oil City Wins Team Trophy; Warren 4th IN Jim Shaughnessy (kneeling) has Dick Thompson in trouble during the third period of their 154-pound championship match in the Section IV tournament Saturday at Titusville. Thompson had gone ahead in the second period on an escape only to fall behind as this picture was taken. He took the lead shortly after this, 3-2, only to be caught by the Oiler with 33 seconds to go in tlie match. However, Thompson won the match on riding time and will be in the Districts Saturday. by Knight 640 Good Enough As far as the top three places were concerned in singles and doubles in the Warren Bowling Association handicap tournament, they were won last week and the second week of roll offs were not needed.

Newcomers this week to the top 30 are May Weber-Joann Dalrymple, sixth, 1117; Isabelle Minelli-Marie Stanton, seventh, 1109; G. McCable-Jean Giltinan, eighth, 1108. TITUSVILLE The wrestling rivalry between Dick Thompson and Oil Jim Shaughnessy is over and Thompson had come out of the scrap with the winning hand. Thompson and Shaughnessy met for the second time this season at the Section IV tournament here Saturday in the finals of the 154- pound class and the match ended in a draw, 3-3. However, Thompson won on riding time advancing to the Districts tournament this Saturday. Terry Rich will also be in the District tournament after sweeping through the 103-pound class and keeping his unbeaten record for the season clean.

Rich won the right to go to Districts by knocking oif Dick Best of Oil iLiy. Oil City went into the tournament favored to walk away with the team trophy and the Oilers did just that. The Oilers were 12 points better than Conneaut Lake and Franklin, tied for second with 36 points apiece. Warren was fourth with 24 points, Titusville and Corry tied for fifth with 15 points and Saegertown and Town ville tied for seventh with 11. Eight of the 12 entries in the tournament were knocked out in the first round.

One grappler was beaten in the semi-finals and another in the finals. Tlie match dragged on throughout the day with a definite lack of pins being noticed by all and many matches going into overtime. One match in the tournament, a championship match, went into double overtime and still ended in a scoreless tie. The referees voted on the winner. Apparently the only person in a hurry to get things over with was Bob Culbertson.

The former Warrenite wrestled a total of three minutes and 14 seconds all day nailing his first opponent flat in 1:22 of the first, his next one in 1:23 of the first and his championship opponent in :29 of the first. He was the only Beaver to make it to the finals. Thompson and Shaughnessy simply felt each other out during the first if they seen enough of each other during the past few years. Shaughnessy was bothered throughout the final match by a cut on his head which he received in the semi-finals. The match had to be stopped several times while the bleeding was stopped.

The second period opened with Thompson down and three seconds later he was ahead by one point with an escape. The second period ended with Dick holding that slim one-point advantage. Shaughnessy scored a reversal when tlie third period was only eight seconds old to take a 2-1 lead. Thompson returned the complement nine seconds later and pulled into a 3-2 lead. Shaughnessy evened the match up with 33 seconds remaining with an escape and it ended in a 3-3 tie.

Riding by the narrowest of the match and 154-pound crown to Thompson. Dick was the only grappler to defeat Shaughnessy in duel-meet competition in the past two years. Shaughnessy, however, has his troubles when he gets into tourna ments, losing this year and last. Rich had his troubles in taking tlie 103-pound title. After a scoreless first period, Rich fell behind 4-1 after Best received two points on a near-fall and two more on a take down.

Rich had one point for an escape. Rich stayed about two points behind Best in the third period and finally the score was 8-6 with only seconds remaining. Just before the final buzzer sounded, Rich scored his first take two send the match into overtime. In the overtime period, Rich scored an escape in the first one- minute period and rode Best the entire second period to win the title. A1 Brown made it to the finals in the 138-pound class but lost out to Mike Anderson of Titusville, 3-1.

All the scoring was done in the third period when Anderson reversed Brown, scored another point on a foul and Brown received a point on a foul by Anderson.
