ADVANCE-REGISTER, Tulare, Monday, Dec. 22, 1980 13 Kareem sets mark in Laker win Blue Demons unbeaten By UPI All work and no play Its vacation time for the nations second-ranked team but DePaul better not be planning any lengthy Christmas visits or luxury cruises. Vacation time means a few days away from practice before an upcoming weekend clash with the third-ranked team in the nation, UCLA. DePaul toiled through its third straight test of will Saturday night, escaping with a 62-54 victory over Northwestern to emerge with the title of the Chicagoland Classic. But the Blue Demons, who trailed by 12 points in the first half, needed a second-half rally to keep their perfect record intact at 8-0.

We are not on our game at all," said tourney MVP Mark Aguirre. We are at a point in the season where instead of things flowing, we're at a point of indecision. So Depaul Coach Ray Meyer has decided to give his team some time off to forget about silly things like teamwork, passing and shooting. We haven't had enough practice time with so many games coming so quickly, Meyer said. But its time to get away from it and relax and see if they can get their heads back on." Aguirre concurred, citing a recently concluded 5-day road trip to Texas and a weekend at the Chicagoland Classic.

The vacation wont last long, however, because DePaul must play the Bruins at the Rosemont Horizon Saturday night before a national television audience. Northwestern, in an ambitious challenge, led 24-12 and held a 52-51 lead with 4:36 left in the game before DePaul outscored the Wildcats 11-2 down the stretch. Northwestern now has a 5-1 record. Jim Stack and Rod Roberson paced Northwestern, which shot 52 percent in the first half but was only 8-of-29 in the second half, with 16 points each. Skip Dillard added 15 for DePaul.

In other games involving Top 10 teams, No. 1 Kentucky defeated Alabama-Birmingham 61-53, No. 3 UCLA routed Temple 7349, No. 6 North Carolina downed No. 7 Indiana 65-56, No.

8 Wake Forest topped Alabama 79-66, No. 9 Maryland downed North Carolina State 82-75 in overtime and No. 13 Arizona State toppled No. 10 Ohio State 71-58. Kentucky sophomore center Sam Bowie scored 25 points, including two free throws with 16 seconds left, and the Wildcats, 6-0, held off pesky Alabama-Birmingham and won the Kentucky Invitational Tourney.

In Tokyo, UCLA overwhelmed Temple before an overflow crowd of 5,000 at the Yoyogi Indoor Stadium, which was used for the 1964 Olympics. Kenny Fields and Mike Sanders topped UCLA with 14 points each and Temples Alton McCullough also had 14. Indiana ran out of energy after building a 30-24 halftime lead. North Carolina, on a 124 spurt to open the second half, drew to a 52-52 tie with five minutes left. Tar Heels guard A1 Wood, who scored 18 points, then made two critical steals, driving in for one layup and feeding off for another- By UPI Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has passed another milestone in his record-breaking career, and he didnt downplay the significance of it.

If you appreciate basketball, then its always nice to do something better than someone else, Abdul-Jabbar said Sunday night after he passed the 25,000 career-point mark with 42 points in the Los Angeles Lakers 135-122 victory over the San Antonio Spurs. The victory by the 24-12 Lakers dropped the Spurs to 24-13 record. Abdul-Jabbar hit for 17 points in the first half and was overpowering with 18 more in the third period. That left him just four points shy of the landmark, and he made his first two shots of the final quarter to go over 25,000. Only Wilt Chamberlain, Oscar Robertson, John Havlicek and Jerry West have more points than Abdul-Jabbar, who is in his 12th season.

I wasnt thinking about it, said the 7-foot-2 center. It just snuck up on me. Abdul-Jabbar, six times the leagues Most Valuable Player, made 15 of 25 shots from the field and 12 of 14 from the foul line for his highest total of the season. Jamaal Wilkes contributed 22 points for Los Angeles. San Antonio, led by guard James Silas, took a 37-32 first-period lead, but Los Angeles erupted for 37 points in the second period to go ahead 69-59.

The Lakers increased the lead to 102-85 after three periods. George Gervin led San Antonio with 20 points. Silas had 19 and Dave Corvine 18.
