CtiiAGO. Sept. 8. Chicago's commissioner of police. W.

F. Russell, issued a warning recently to housewives not to patronize peddlers. Thousands of Chicagoans are swindled annually by men and women peddlers, who under pretense of selling imported laces, rugs and scarves, imitation furs and other articles, are, in reality, palming off fake merchandise. ine victi: is are usually housewives and office girls who take ad- I where he is shot dead. This recalls to mind the story of the Duke of Wellington, who. in 1814. was refused admittance to Almack's because he wore a pair of new style long-legged black trousers instead of the fancy knee breeches common in that day. Trousers in their present form were introduced in England at the start of the 19th century, but weren't popular for some years.

The unwary buyer is also victimized fre- quently when buying pottery, vases and silks, supi-csed to come from the i temples in China or the bazaars of I India and Turkey. They were perpetrators of the old "Gran care and attention. For instance, it pays to paint the tin portions of a roof, flashings and Tdecks, every two or three years. And it also pays to brush stain a shingle roof at least every five years. A paint film is not thick. Something like one five-hundredth of an inch.

So naturally that film cannot -Ut indefinitely as it is constantly 'exposed to storm, wind, snow and rain. Stain and paint both form, to a certain extent, a water proof coating. W. G. Ponader, developer of the town of Maple Lane on "the Edwards-burg highway, believes that more progress had been made during 1928 than for several years.

"Many people have located or prepared to locate in our suburban community this year." he told The Tribune. "Of course, most of them have been from the city, but some have been newcomers to South Bend." Eleven modern homes have been built this year, and 30 sites for homes have been sold. Bernard Voll has purchased three acres in Maple Lane woods, on the Ironwood road, for his home. Russell Williams and J. S.

Everywhere there are signs of prosperity and the people are happy and contented and above all confident. "The condition of the state, I believe, can be traced directly to the show put on each year at Cheyenne and known all over the nation as 'Frontier This show is a real one and has attracted big people from all parts of the United States.

They now look to Wyoming as the real west with vast opportunities for investment and a real play ground. "As a result a new industry has sprung up known as 'Dude Ranching'; the name was applied originally in derision, but it is the real thing now. Ranches which at one time had only one asset, scenery, and one product, mortgages, are now teeming with prosperity and people. Families from the thickly populated districts of the country spend their en-lire summer on these places. Everybody dresses in cowboy uniform, wears spurs and rides horses, and the children particularly get a 'kick out of it that they cannot get any place else in the country.

"It is a remarkable development that a celebration, such as 'Frontier Days', started to amuse the cowhands, could grow to such proportions that it would affect the prosperity of an entire state, but Wyoming has been well repaid for the money spent developing this show and the effects of it are felt through the entire Rocky Mountain region." Indications that no radical slackening of construction operations will take place during the weeks of the immediate future are being drawn from reports of record-breaking awards of contracts. The volume of contracts awarded during July was the greatest noted for that month in any year on record.

The total volume of contracts awarded during the first seven months of this year is 10 per cent greater than the total gained during the same period In 1927. A scale which places the 1913 average at 100 as its basis shows the index number for the volume of construction actually under way during WASHINGTON, Sept. 8. Continuing the rapid pace assumed early this summer, construction operations last month established a new record for August activities, according to statistics Just compiled by the Associated General Contractors of America. The figures, covering all types of construction, show June of this year as the only month on record during which a greater volume of work was handled.

The total volume of construction registered for the first eight months of this year is more than two per cent greater than the figures recorded for the corresponding period of 1927.
