SN One MONDAY'S LINEUP 33 32 COM THE CANADIAN GUNN Josh Leivo battled the Sabres' Joel Armia on Sunday night as he fights for a spot in the Toronto Maple Leafs' starting lineup this season. The odds are not in Leivo's favour with so many forwards in camp. TORONTO 3 BUFFALO 2 (SO) Leivo making his case for spot with Maple Leafs 'I LIKE A CHALLENGE' Injuries, opportunity could spell a job for camp hopeful BY MICHAEL TRAIKOS TORONTO For a while there, it seemed as if the Toronto Maple Leafs were adding a player every day. At least, that is what the summer looked like to Josh Leivo, who watched helplessly as the team he hopes to play for this season spent the free-agency period signing every depth forward they could get their hands on. For a young player on the cusp of playing in the NHL, the offseason additions should have represented roadblocks.

But Leivo did not see it that way. "I like a little challenge," said the training-camp hopeful. "Obviously, there's older guys coming to the team, they're all still fighting for the same spots," he said. "I think it's all even competition. I like a challenge.

I think it's a little fun when there's a little challenge." That has become the standard answer for the half-dozen or so players still fighting for a spot at a training camp. They say competition is good. They prefer that jobs with a week until before teams have to submit their 23-man roster, Leivo appears to have separated himself from the rest of the pack for a spot on the right side of the second or third forward line. Playing on a line with Nazem Kadri and Nylander on Sunday night, the 21-year-old Leivo had five shots four were blocked and came close to scoring after firing a one-timer from the slot that Sabres goaltender Andrey Makarov just got a piece of. With David Clarkson out with a facial injury and Booth out with a bruised foot he suffered in Sunday's game, Leivo could start the season on a line with Kadri and Joffrey Lupul.

"I like to say that Josh Leivo has played well for our hockey club and he's been very noticeable," said Carlyle. "Again, we have to look at where we're at. You guys do the math." Two years ago, the Leafs sent Tim Connolly to the minors and traded Matthew Lombardi in order to free up roster spots for Kadri and Leo Komarov. But does the team have the stomach to cut Colton Orr, risk losing Frattin on waivers or sending Kontiola who bought out his KHL contract for a chance to play in the NHL- back to Russia? As much as general manager Dave Nonis and Carlyle want to reward the players who have had the best camp, the reality is that Leivo and Carrick do not have to clear waivers to play for the Marlies, while a player like Frattin runs the risk of being claimed if he does not make the team. That does not mean Frattin, whom Toronto re-acquired in a trade from Columbus this summer because of how he played for the Leafs two years ago, is taking anything for granted.

"That's definitely a warm welcoming that they want you back, but that doesn't mean anything is set in stone," he said. "You still have to do your job." National Post Twitter.com/Michael_Traikos Clarkson derailed by injury, again -priced winger out with facial issue after fight BY MICHAEL TRAIKOS TORONTO For the second straight year, David Clarkson is at danger of missing the start of the regular season. The Toronto Maple Leafs forward, who served a 10-game suspension at the beginning of last year, is out indefinitely after taking a punch to the face in a pre-season game against the Buffalo Sabres on Friday night. Head coach Randy Carlyle said Clarkson is expected to see an ear, REMEMBERING To place an obituary or in memoriam call 1-888-394-9367 fax 888-744-3725 email: remembering.ca The National Post notes the following obituaries in today's paper To view a notice online, share your memories or express condolences, go to nationalpost.com/obituaries BATYI, PEZIM, KLAYMAN, WEGNER, NICHOLS, New notices are marked by Notices may not appear alphabetically due to space requirements. It is the stuff of And yet, it is also the reality of a training camp that was designed with the sole purpose of making players uncomfortable. This year, the Leafs signed more one-way contracts than there are roster spots. They invited veterans on tryouts. They stressed that jobs would be won or lost based on performance. Now comes the hard part: keeping their word.

If this is truly a meritocracy, then some very good players are going to either be lost to waivers or assigned to the minors. More and more that seems to be where the Leafs are heading, as players like Leivo (one goal and two assists in four games), William Nylander (one goal and one assist), Brandon Kozun (one goal and one assist), Sam Carrick (one goal and one assist in four games) continue to outplay Matt Frattin, David Booth, Petri Kontiola and Mike Santorelli, who have combined for no goals and two assists. "Again we've asked people to step out of the norm," said head coach Randy Carlyle. "We're not accepting from any player that what you've been doing or what you've done here is good enough." Phil Kessel and James van Riesmdyk both scored, while Peter Holland had the overtime shootout winner, in Sunday night's 3-2 victory against the Buffalo Sabres. "That's obviously something to do with facial, so that's where we're at with him," he said. "They're all concerning obviously, he's got a bruised up face. We still have to wait for some of the swelling to come down and then they'll have a better opportunity to assess what's going on." Clarkson, who had missed the first week of training camp with a lowerbody injury, was playing in his first pre-season game when he fought Buffalo's Cody McCormick. After the fight, Clarkson left the game. It was the start of a miserable season for the 30-year-old, who scored just five goals and 11 points in 60 games. Based on what happened last year and the fact that he had already missed time in training camp this year, Carlyle was asked if Clarkson should have even been fighting in what was essentially a meaningless game. "I guess that's a question," he said. "There are certain times where you're better suited to turn the other cheek depending on the opponent and whatnot.

"But it's something that's done and we're going to have to deal with it and move on." National Post express condolences, or add photos go edmontonjoumal.com, then click on Obituaries NATIONAL POST Obituaries How will you remember them? remembering.ca -C1041545.
