AT NATIONALPOST.COM NP, POSTED Olympic officials deny strict 'specs' for hostesses BEIJING GAMES BY AILEEN McCABE SHANGHAI The search for picture-perfect Olympic hostesses appears to have hit a snag as it moves from tightly controlled Beijing to China's more open and cosmopolitan financial capital. News that Olympic organizers will be on the campuses of 10 Shanghai universities when students return from spring break on Monday looking to recruit 40 young women to decorate the podiums at next summer's Beijing Games has been trumpeted by the media here for days.

The rigorous selection criteria have also been widely circulated. Shanghai's Xinmin Evening News outlined in detail the "specs," beginning with "eye length is three-tenths of the face." It said the judges also stipulated: "Distance between eyebrows and eyes should be onetenth of the face. The width of the nose should be one-tenth of the face width. The width of the mouth should equal the distance between the pupils. The length of the chin should be one-sixth of the face length." Xinmin said those selected will be 18 to 24 years old, 1.68 to 1.78 metres tall, have a "rosy and shiny" complexion, "elastic skin," "smooth and gently curved legs" and a "plump, but not fat" body.

With no hint of irony, Xinhua, China's official news agency, called the exacting requirements "another example of meticulous planning for the Summer Games." In a country with no feminist organizations or free media, and no tolerance for any criticism of the Games, this tapemeasure-selection approach sparked little comment, just a lot of jokes on English-language blogs. But it appears the humorists found their mark. Yesterday, the Shanghai Daily reported, "Officials denied previous media reports that the competition required strict standards of facial appearance." All that is needed, the paper said, is a "regular appearance with standard proportions." The hasty revision to the official criteria is unlikely to convince most Shanghai co-eds they might now have a chance at one of the 40 coveted slots. Indeed, since recruitment for hostesses began last fall in Beijing, this is the first time organizers have even whispered the words "regular" and "standard" when describing their dream candidates. Instead, the talk has been of "mandated eight-tooth smiles," "curvaceous thighs" and "small behinds." Zhao Dongming, director of cultural activities for the Beijing Olympic Organizing Committee, candidly told a reporter last fall, "Of course the girls should be young and pretty." Mr. Richards even refers to Andrew Law, 41, as "my head man," according to a report in the British newspaper The Daily Mail. For once the term is entirely accurate, the paper added. Dr. Law performed a life-saving operation to drill into Mr.

Richards's skull after he fell out of a coconut tree while on holiday in Fiji in April, 2006. The rock star suffered a blood clot on the brain and was airlifted to a private hospital in Auckland, New Zealand, where Dr. Law was called in to assess him at 2 a.m. "I wasn't too impressed being up at this time," the surgeon told the Mail. "So I just said, What the f--- have you been up I think that broke the ice.

He just laughed." He added that the surgery required was far from minor. "He was really unwell. I told him, I might kill you today' He very aware of it. He had to put his life in my hands." Mr. Richards survived and within weeks was well enough to rejoin the world tour.

Insurers demanded Dr. Law go along as well.
