(A Member of The Star Staff President Trumans Christmas holiday will cost him about two extra hours of hard work daily for a week, the President estimated to a friend here before returning to the capital. It will take that much time and effort to catch up with the enormous volume of paper work which burdens a President, Mr. Truman estimated as he discussed plans for whipping into shape the messages he must deliver to Congress next month. The President was in no sense complaining about the work which is his lot but merely out lining the tasks ahead of him, and what it cost to be even briefly away from Washington.

Ordinarily much paper work follows Mr. Truman wherever he goes and does not pile up too heavily, but on this visit the President has had very little time to devote to that daily routine. His time was given over in part to his family and visits with friends and neighbors. Mr. Truman was able to take care of some of the more pressing work as well as devote some time to work on his mssages, but he must still put in the extra hours of work.

The staff which accompanied the President on this trip was not as large as on other excursions. Mr. Truman was reluctant to bring the usual crew that trawels with him. He permitted some to remain with their families for the holiday and join him here after they had observed Christmas around their own firesides. On his recent vacation In Key West, Mr.

Truman was able to keep fairly well abreast of the paper work. The staff is better organized for operating in Key West and the President was there long enough so that a routine was worked out that permitted the rapid handling of the papers. In Key West the President can be shut off more easily from the visitors so that his time for the daily grind is not cut short by a heavy volume of fans and friends calling at his quarters.
