Lions' workout yesterday, perhaps sending a message to coach Wally Buono to speed up the process that would allow his CFL career to resume. Allen, who did not mingle during practice, is on the sidelines due to the Lions' acquisition of quarterback Dave Dickenson. Earlier in the day, he implied CFL commissioner Tom Wright should force Buono into making a deal to send him elsewhere in the league.

Robert Johnson no longer plans to buy the Montreal Expos and move them to the Washington area, The Washington Post reported yesterday. Johnson, the founder of Black Entertainment Television, told the newspaper he was too involved with the NBA expansion team in Charlotte he recently purchased.

Johnson also said his partner in the baseball bid, Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder, would not pursue a team without him. Zimmer calls out 'Boss' Yankees coach Don Zimmer lashed out at New York owner George Steinbrenner for saying it was up to Joe Torre to fix the struggling team. "I got fed up reading all the things about our manager who has won four World Series in seven years," Zimmer said yesterday. "That's a joke. Then again, he's the Boss." Steinbrenner told newspapers earlier this week that he had given Torre everything he had asked for, so it was the manager's responsibility to make sure the team started playing better.

Williams' son released John Henry Williams, the son of late Hall of Famer Ted Williams, has been released by the Schaumburg Flyers of the independent Northern League and cleared waivers, the team said yesterday. He played in three exhibition games and was O-for-7 with five strikeouts.
