There is still an urgent need for managers before the season opens. With Craig Anderson and Kevin Weigel leading the way, trackmen zipped to their second dual meet win of the season Thursday, as the Wolverines roared to a win over Sparta High School on the Sheffield track. Anderson figured in the Sheffield win by capturing three first places, winning the high jump with a 510 effort, the pole vault with a 10-6 vault, and the discus with a toss of 119 feet inches. Weigel chipped in with firsts in the long jump and the triple jump. Eighteen feet two inches won the long jump, and a hop, step, and jump of 37 feet two inches accorded him the triple jump.

Brent Jones was also a two-first winner for the Wolverines, grabbing a first place in the 440, and running a leg of first place mile relay team. triple winner for the afternoon was Dave Boythe who notched firsts in the 100-and 220- yard dashes, and ran a leg of 880 relay squad. Other first places for the Wolverines went to Jack Landers in the javelin with a toss of 145-2, Ned Bean in the high hurdles, Rick Gustafson who ran a 5:28.3 mile; Jim Buck in the 880 yard run, and Curt Bowley in the two-mile run. The Sheffield runners swept both the Javelin and the 880 en route to the victory. Other first places for Sparta went to Gary Knowlton in the shot put with a heave of 44 feet inches, and Rex Aikens in the 180-yard low hurdles with a 25.5 clocking.

Billy Casper, one of only three men to win $1 million out of the game, withdrew with bursitis in his left hip after shooting a two- over-par 74, far back in the field. And Lee Trevino, the gate attraction at this tournament that is being shunned by Gary Player, Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, also had a 74 and must improve drastically if he is to make the cut for the final two rounds Saturday and Sunday.

Cupit and Graham, neither of whom has won in four years, held a one-stroke lead over Puerto Rican Chi Chi Rodriguez, J.C. Snead and hard-hitting Larry Ziegler, tied at 66. About a half dozen more including dangerous Davey Hill, were at 67, as the par 72 Lakewood Country Club course offered little challenge to the touring pros. The others included Rod Funseth, Gordon Jones, veteran Johnny Pott, Lee Elder, club pro Alex Sutton, Gene Littler and Jack Lewis. Steve Reid also had a 67, but was disqualified when he inadvertently failed to sign his scorecard.
