McQueen turned it down, saying he wouldn't be able to shed a tear on cue, which was required of the character upon entering the alien spaceship. Although Spielberg offered to rewrite the scene, McQueen told him he should leave the scene intact and get another actor. Philbin received Daytime Emmy nominations for outstanding talk show host and game show host yesterday. Live with Regis minus either Kathie Lee Gifford or Kelly Ripa had a best talk show nod. Bring her back soon and give her a new piano MUSIC REVIEW Angela Cheng Jane Mallett Theatre, Toronto BY TAMARA BERNSTEIN It's scandalous that Angela Cheng's appearance at MusicToronto this week was her first solo recital in this city in six years. But it was worth the wait. Cheng, who was born in Hong Kong, raised in Edmonton and now teaches at Oberlin College in Ohio, is an artist of exceptional warmth, eloquence and intelligence: On Tuesday night she gave treasurable performances of music by Haydn, Ravel, Chopin and Bach-Busoni. Cheng's earthy relationship to the piano immediately puts you at ease in the big, virtuosic works on the program, it didn't feel like she was playing or controlling the instrument so much as kneading it, like bread. IT DIDN'T FEEL LIKE SHE WAS PLAYING OR CONTROLLING THE INSTRUMENT SO MUCH AS KNEADING IT At the same time, her intense mental and imaginative focus makes you sit up and listen.

Even when she walks on stage, gracefully nodding to the public, you can feel her being pulled to the instrument as if by a powerful magnet. Haydn and Mozart are usually throwaway pieces on modern piano recitals. But Cheng's performance of Haydn's Sonata in Major, Hob. XV1.50, was magnificent full of wit, drama, technical brilliance and, in the slow movement, pathos. Cheng is sharp as a tack, too: Instead of emphasizing the classical regularity of the piece and smoothing over its eccentricities, as so many modern pianists do, she made you hear and enjoy every quirky turn of events in this mercurial piece: playfully abrupt phrase ends, unpredictable phrase lengths, unexpected harmonies (by 18th-century standards), sudden descents into mystery and 1 pathos in the playful first movement.

It felt slightly odd to plunge from Haydn into Ravel's darkly decadent (and ultravirtuosic) Gaspard de la nuit, which was inspired by hallucinatory, fin de poems by Aloysius Bertrand. But I liked the strong sense of menace that Cheng brought to the first movement, Ondine, which conjures a siren-like water nymph, and the privacy she gave Le Gibet (The Gallows), where one seemed to be inside the mind of a very messed-up person fantasizing about his own death. I was less convinced by her Scarbo, where her tone seemed rather muffled in (AA) the climaxes. Then again, in an ideal world, the St. Lawrence Centre's Steinway would have been put out to pasture a few years ago and at the very least, it should have been in tune for Cheng's recital.

Chopin's Polonaise-Fantasie in A-flat Major, Op.61, worked well after the Ravel: You could hear pianistic foreshadowings of Gaspard in it, but its romantic yearning sounded downright wholesome after the all-out decadence of the Ravel. In her thoughtful, soulful performance of the Chopin, Cheng played down the military content of the Polonaise, which wants to rush forward. Instead, she let the spacious, emotional side of the piece prevail while letting the tension between the two shape the piece. Cheng closed her program with a warm, noble performance of Busoni's arrangement of Bach's Chaconne, from the Partita in Minor for solo violin. While I have difficulties listening to the original violin piece played on modern violin, I love Busoni's respectful but unashamedly romantic piano transcription.

And I loved Cheng's performance, which was warm and noble, but refreshingly free from pomposity. Often singing along, she made full use of the piano's sonorities and colours to bring out Bach's seemingly limitless invention. Let's hope we won't have to wait another six years to hear this gifted artist in 12:00 recital again. not I The concert was recorded for future broadcast on CBC Radio Two's In. Performance and Take Five.
