A LIFE NATIONAL POST, THURSDAY, MARCH 15, 2001 Yet another Close Encounters; Vancouver's kinks HOME ENTERTAINMENT: SF AND switchers, fetishists. Showcase, the channel that; advertises itself as television without borders, will ex-; amine them all in Kink, an original series that debuts; after midnight April 6. The 13-part series is filmed by David Paperny in Vancouver. Viewers will meet; David, a gay, old-school leather master, and who works in a body-piercing salon and enjoys," whips and bondage. "The time was right to produce a documentary series like this," says Paperny.

"Mem-. bers of Vancouver's community were eagerto finally come out, especially with more and more de pietions of alternative forms of sexual expression ap- pearing in our popular culture." News services Exactly three years after Steven Spielberg released a third new cut of his 1.977 film Close Encounters of the Third Kind on laserdisc, that "collector's edition" will be released on DVD May 29. The director first recut the film and added an ending that took viewers inside the alien spaceship for a "Special Edition" theatrical reissue in 1980. A video followed. Then in 199B, he recut the film again for the laserdisc edition and lopped off the spaceship ending.

Eleven deleted scenes, many of them already seen in some form in the various cuts of the movie, will be included on the Columbia TriStar Home Video DVD, to be priced at The 137-niinute version of the special edition of Close Encounters grossed in 1980, a small percentage of the that the 135-minute original grossed on its release in 1977. Eor the first TV broadcast, yet another edition was crafted, incorporating scenes from both versions, as well as the spaceship ending. The DVD release of Close Encounters will whittle down the number of Spielberg-directed films still unavailable on DVD. Others include E.T. twEvtra-Terrestri-al, Schindler's List and the Indiana Jones trilogy.

Sadomasochists, cross-dressers, gender- movie will be presented on DVD in 5.1 channel Dolby Digital and DTS sound, as well as two-channel Dolby. Also included on the DVD will be the 100-minute documentary from the laserdisc, in which Spielberg discusses offering the film's lead role to Steve McQueen. McQueen turned it clown, saying he wouldn't be able to shed a tear on cue, which was required of the character upon entering the alien spaceship. Although Spielberg offered to rewrite the scene, McQueen told him he should leave the scene intact and get another actor. The first 132-minute Who wants to win a Daytime Emmy? llcgis Philbin says no, and that's his final answer i.

Wlio Wants to Be a Millionaire was eligible for a prime-time Emmy for the first time this year. But producers said that category had not been set by the deadline for Daytime Emmy entrants. Awards will be given out by the National Academy of Television Arts and Daytime Emmy category despite being one of prime time's most popular shows. Philbin, no fan of the Emmys, muttered "I hope not" when talk show co-host Ripa asked producer Michael Gelman on yesterday's show whether Philbin had been nominated. When Ripa asked if he was excited to be nominated, Philbin said sarcastically, "Yeah," and quickly moved on to the show's next guest.

Besides Philbin, talk show host nominees are Rosie O'Donnell, Donny Marie Osmond, and The Viexv crew of Barbara Walters, Meredith Vieira, Star Jones, Joy Behar and Lisa Ling. Game show host nominees are Philbin, Tom Bergeron of Hollywood Sqiuires, Alex Trebek of Bob Barker of The Price Is Right, and Ben Stein and Jimmy Kimmel of Win Ben Stein's Money. By David Baudi-r I le may have a lot, but Regis Philbi doesn't have a Daytime Emmy award. Now he has two more chances to change that. Philbin received Daytime Emmy nominations for outstanding talk show host and game show host yesterday.

Live with Regis minus either Kathie Lee Gifford or Kelly Ripa had a best talk show nod. Philbin is an eight-time loser in the category of best talk show host. He also lost last year in the category of best game show host for Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. The show is competing in the Sr 2 Not excited: Philbin Sciences on May 18 in a ceremony at Raj- dio City Music Hall in New York, tele vised by NBC. But it was worth the wait. Cheng, who was born in Hong Kong, raised in Edmonton and now teaches at Oberlin College in Ohio, is an artist of exceptional warmth, eloquence and intelligence: On Tuesday night she gave trea-surable performances of music by I Iaydn, Ravel, Chopin and Bach-Busoni.

Cheng's earthy relationship to the piano immediately puts you at ease in the big, virtuosic works on the program, it didn't feel like she was playing or controlling the instrument so much as kneading it, like bread. It felt slightly odd to plunge from Haydn into Ravel's darkly decadent (and ultra-virtuosic) Gaspardde la nuit, which was inspired by hallucinatory, fin de siecle poems by Aloysius Bcrtrand. But I liked the strong sense of menace that Cheng brought to the first movement, Ondine, which conjures a siren-like water nymph, and the privacy she gave Le Gihet (The Gallows), where one seemed to be inside the mind of a very messcd-up person fantasizing about his own death. I was less convinced by her Scurho, where her tone seemed rather muffled in the climaxes. Then again, in an ideal world, the St. Lawrence Centre's Steinway would have been put out to pasture a few years ago and at the very least, it should have been in tune for Cheng's recital.

Chopin's Polonaise-Fantasie in A-flat Major, Op.61, worked well after the Ravel: You could hear pianistic foreshadow-ings of Gaspard in it, but its romantic yearning sounded downright wholesome after the all-out decadence of the Ravel. In her thoughtful, soulful performance of the Chopin, Cheng played down the military content of the Polonaise, which wants to rush forward. Instead, she let the spacious, emotional side of the piece prevail while letting the tension between the two shape the piece. Cheng closed her program with a warm, noble performance of Busoni's arrangement of Bach's Chaconne, from the Partita in Minor for solo violin. While I have difficulties listening to the original violin piece played on modern violin, I love Busoni's respectful but unashamedly romantic piano transcription.

And I loved Cheng's performance, which was warm and noble, but refreshingly free from pomposity. Often singing along, she made full use of the piano's sonorities and colours to bring out Bach's seemingly limitless invention. Ix't's hope we won't have to wait another six years to hear this gifted artist in recital again. I The concert was recorded for future broadcast on CBC Radio Two's Performance and Take Five. Even when she walks on stage, gracefully nodding to the public, you can feel her being pulled to the instrument as if by a powerful magnet. Haydn and Mozart are usually throw-away pieces on modern piano recitals. But Cheng's performance of Haydn's Sonata in Major, Hob. XVI.50, was magnificent full of wit, drama, technical brilliance and, in the slow movement, pathos. Cheng is sharp as a tack, too: Instead of emphasizing the classical regularity of the piece and smoothing over its eccentricities, as so many modern pianists do, she made you hear and enjoy every quirky turn of events in this mercurial piece: playfully abrupt phrase ends, unpredictable phrase lengths, unexpected har EE aTHtiTH IHb MEXICAN Yd 40 1 15 4 0U A 4o 4u 11 00 Late stiuw Mun.lliu 2 (10 hie Wfid 11 00 12 20 (AA) THX J6.50 GENERAL ADMISSION 15 MINUTES 1 00 4 00 7 00 9 50 (AA) THE MEXICAN 1 15 4 15 7 15 10 00 (AA) HANNIBAL 1:20 4:20 7 20 10.15 (AA) Fnghtemng scenes, violence, not recommended for children DOWN TO EARTH 1 30 4 30 7:30 9 45 (PG) SEE SPOT RUN 1 25 4 25 7 25 9 40 (PG) 3000 MILES TO GRACELAND 10 10 (R) MONKEYBONE 1 35 4 35 7 35 (PG) 15 MINUTES 12 30 3 40 00 10 00 (AA) THX HANNIBAL 1 00 4.10 10 10.45 (AA) THX Fnghteivng scenes, violence.
