As Announced It Caused the Manager Nore Distress, In the early "stock" days of Washington, before the starring system was in rogue, it often happened that some bibulons member of the company sought surcease of sorrow in the flowing bowl, says the Washington Post. Salaries had not reached that fabulous outline which now prevails, and tho. ghost did not always walk, and therefore, there was always more or less sorrow to be appeased in the popular tap rooms about town where the "profession" congregated. It happened ox one occasion that a too Jiberul indulgence had rendered hors de combat one. of the leading members of the company, who is still a prominent and popular actor to-day.

It was not the first Lime that he had been discovered in a helpless abont condition just as the curtain was to go up, but he was cast for a leading part on this particular night, and there was great excitement on the: 11 was decided to substitute another bill, and the question now. turned on the natnre of the explanaLion to be made to the waiting audience. that Mr. Brown bas had a sudden attack of cholera morbus or bowel complaint," said the distressed: manager of the theater to the stage This worthy was a heavy-voiced individual with a strong Dublin accent. and a Celtic temperament which inclioed to the humorous.

lle made his. before the curtain, bowed, and in. way his deep, rolling voice addresed the audience as follows: "Ladies and Gentlemen: I regret to announce that the management is: obliged to change the bill to owing to Mr. Brown, who has had 3 severe attack of bowl complaint." The audience caught the spirit of the. joke.

and, amid general laughter, settled down to the enjoyment of the performance. MOON MYTHS. The Satellite an Object of Worship ant Superstition In Nearly All Nations. have on mood, day, to Idabo, home gone J. J.

WAS Baker former street, answer serious D. the The moon has been worshiped among nearlyall the nation's of the world from time immemorial; indeed, her cult has beep asserted to be much older established than sup-worship, says the Year Round. The Peruvian peasant hurries home out of the old moonshine, afraid of the stern eyes of Mama Quilla. and the Egyptian fellah lounges across tho sands where the sphinx' shadow lies black at his feet, with a prayer on his lips or in his heart to Thoth -Thoth, the Muster of Wisdom, the Lord of the Ibis. in whose absence the fair land of Kehm has been brought down very low.

Swabian girls still refuse to spin by moonlight. "lest they would anger. Her." they say, vaguely. and in Germany children firmly believe in ilorsel or Holda, whose boat is the moon, whose flower is the flax and whose de light is to reward industrious little muidens. Dante makes the man in the moon Cain: in Egypt he is Horus.

held to the breast of Isis, his mother and the moon. In Rantum the man is the moon is 2 giunt. who at flowing tide stops to water on the earth and at ebb tide pour stands upright in order that the waters may subside. A curious eastern fancy is that the figure in the 10000 is that of the pattern wife. Ina.

who weaves the clouds into white cloth. and who, after the lapse of MADE rears, sent the her rainbow mortal bridge husband in back to earth by order that death might not defile het heavenly home. The cat and the panther are both connected with the moon in some vague, occult fashion: indeed, in. Australia the moon is represented as a native cat and also in In Chins the celestials say that there is a frog is the moon, metam hosed beaut led.
