Arthur Axmann, leader of the Hitler youth after Baldur von Schirach became gauleiter of Vienna, asserted under interrogation he saw Hitler and Eva Braun dead in their Berlin air raid bunker and he helped burn the bodies in the garden of the reichs chancellery. Fugitive Shot Down in Ohio Episcopal Church FINDLAY, 0., Oct. 9. (AP)-A state patrolman shot down a fugitive gunman today in Trinity Episcopal church, rescuing a rector who had been held age for an hour while Chief of Police Leo Harkins "preached the best sermon of my life." The gunman, identified by Harkins as Leonard Johnson, 29, Detroit, was holding a .32 calibre automatic pistol at the head of the Rev. John Evans Knox as a policeman fired the shot.

He was not seriously wounded. Soldiers' Medals Now At Recruiter's Office Defense and Victory medals for discharged soldiers are now available at his office, Staff. Sgt. George T. Smith, local army recruiter, announced here Thursday.

Veterans should present original discharge papers in claiming the medals, he said. His office is at 233 E. Tulare street. One of every five Frenchmen is a farmer. 1947 GINNING WAY AHEAD OF LAST SEASON SACRAMENTO, Oct.

9. (AP)California's current cotton crop is of "very good" quality, the state department of agriculture reports on the basis of first ginnings. The department said the state's 432,000 acres of harvestable cotton made good progress during September, with no damage from warm weather. A yield of 680,000 bales was predicted, for an average of 614 pounds an acre. This compares with last year's 458,000 bales and the 10- year average of 442,000 bales.

The year's crop matured early, with 55,000 running bales ginned before Oct. 1, compared with 19,000 bales at the same time last year. Department statisticians have predicted California's yield to be 680,000 bales with an average lint yield of 614 pounds an acre. Red Scale Work Discussed Lennox E. Roark, manager of the Tulare county red scale citrus protective district, spoke to the Lindsay Lions club Wednesday evening on the operation of his district in controlling citrus pests.

Roark explained to the group the various types of citrus I pests encountered in the orchards of the Tulare county citrus belt and the means used by the district in combatting them. Prior to the talk by Roark two new members of the Lindsay Lions club were inducted by Dr. D. S. Clark.

The two new Cubs are Hoyle Gordon and Robert Brailey. During the meeting a discussion was held on a proposed "Olive bowl" Thanksgiving day football game. Tentative plans call for signing two outstanding football teams to play in the Lindsay high school stadium. In addition to the football game a majorette contest is slated. The group hopes to make it an annual event.

Rai E. Hiatt, chairman of the Lindsay Lions "ladies night" scheduled for Oct. 15, reported on plans for the program. Joe Early, chairman of the Lindsay community chest, spoke on the needs for the Lindsay area and urged the Lions to aid the chest in reaching its goal. John E.

Moore was program chairman for the evening. Bullitt Proposes Cash Aid to Chinese Nation NEW YORK, Oct. 9. (AP) -William C. Bullitt, former ambassador to Russia and France, today proposed a three-year 350,000,000 program of American aid to the Chinese government to prevent Russia "from taking over China." Writing in Life magazine, Bullitt also suggested that Gen.

Laird also pointed out the advantages of a broad tax base as the foundation for a good school program. He cited the Lincoln school as the prime example of the ability of a large school district to divert funds to a poor district, so that the same educational advantages can be enjoyed by all children, regardless of the financial condition of their immediate neighborhood.
