ARTS LIFE D8 NATIONAL POST, MONDAY, MAY 21, 2001 Rampaging Mummy is seen off by an ogre with the voice of Mike Myers Tale, with The Jennifer Lopez vehicle Angel Eyes A lovelorn green ogre with the voice of Mike Myers ruled the North American box office on the weekend, according to studio estimates issued yesterday. WEEKEND BOX OFFICE Sunday period, and ranks behind only W99's Toy Story 2 as the No. 2 opening for an animated feature. The Mummy Returns slipped to No. 2 with followed by A Knight's opened at No.

4, with British romance Bridget Jones's Diary was fifth, with Moulin Rouge, which kicked off the Cannes Film Festival, opened in one sold-out theatre each in New York and Los Angeles It goes on wide release June 1. News services It was the industry's second-best opening for an movie, Shrek grossed about for the Friday-to- Less Regis, more weak links and a superhero Tick U.S. networks unveil fall schedules titled Criminal Intent, and it stars Vin- cent D'Onofrio. The gimmick is that you see the cases not only from the perspective of the police but also that of the criminal. CBS The network has canned Diagnosis Murder, Nash Bridges and Walker, Texajs Ranger, leaving it startlingly short on series that serve as reliable comic fodder for lazy television columnists.

To make up for that, CBS will present the new Ellen De-Generes series, The Ellen Show. Let me be the first critic to say Ellen 's new show is not nearly as funny as it used to be. Other notes: Richard Dreyfuss stars as a professor old-fashioned man in a modern according to CBS) in The Education of Max Bickford. The network will take on NBC's ER with The Agency, a CIA drama from film director Wolfgang Petersen. And it will counter NBC's The West Wing with a new reality series called The Amazing Race, in which 11 teams will race around the world in 30 to 40 days for a prize.

FOX The X-Files will indeed return for a ninth season, though David Duchovny will not appear at all and creative input from Chris Carter, the show's creator, will reportedly be significantly diminished. Annabeth Gish, whose character was introduced this season, will become a regular on the series. Fox boasts some of the season's most anticipated shows, including The Tick a live-action superhero comedy starring the guy who played Puddy on Seinfeld and 24, a drama that features Kiefer Sutherland and tracks an assassination attempt against a presidential candidate. The clever contrivance: It's in real time 24 hours, 24 episodes. Other notes: Two comedy shows that have generated much enthusiasm Greg the Bunny and Andy Richter Controls the Universe won't appear until midseason at the earliest.

The Lone Gunmen has been axed, and Jessica Alba's Dark Angel moves to Fridays. Loyal fans will be relieved to know her skintight wardrobe and vast reserves of lip gloss move with it Scott Feschuk on Television ters: Irate Barbara: I know your tricks, Barbara. I'm not going to cry. A crew member covertly zaps Irate Barbara with a cattle prod. Irate Barbara: Bwaaaaaaaah! Curiously, NYPD Blue will air Wednesdays at 10 p.m., which happens to be the time slot of NBC's Law Order, a series that continues to attract viewers the way that Muskoka attracts wealthy Toronto-nians who stubbornly insist on referring to their eight-bedroom waterfront mansion as "the cottage." NYPD Blue's current Tuesday slot goes to Steven Bochco's new drama Philly, starring NYPD Blue amlumae Kim Delaney.

Other notes: The desperate appeals seemed to have worked, as Once and Again a show apparently so good that no one can actually bear to watch it has survived despite feeble ratings. It moves to Fridays, which will also be home to The Mole 2. The Job, starring Denis Leary, returns on Wednesdays for a full season. And Who Wants to Be a Millionaire will appear three times a week instead of four in part because of eroding ratings, in part because ABC's secret industrial complex in rural South Korea is running low on the finite resources required to maintain its output of Regis Philbin clones. Two new shows look like safe bets to provide reliable chuckles: Bob Patterson stars Jason Alexander as a motivational speaker whose life is falling apart.

Thieves stars John Stamos. Not a comedy, but almost certain to be hilarious. CHRIS CUFFARO FOX BROADCASTING David Burke (Arthur), Liz Vassey (Captain Liberty), Nestor Carbonell (Bat Manuel) and Patrick Wharburton (The Tick) star in The Tick. With most U.S. series having had their season finales, let's look ahead to what's in store for the fall season on the four major U.S.

networks: ABC The network garnered headlines last week for its snub of Barbara Walters, whose 2020 will for two months be bumped off the air by the naked posterior of Dennis Franz and his NYPD Blue colleagues. Walters was, by all accounts, wather wiled by the decision. Watch for ABC executives to turn water into wine (or rather, whine into wine) by greenr lighting a new edition of The Barbara Walters Special, in which Barbara Walters interviews the irate Barbara Wal NBC NBC's Must-See Thursday lineup used to prompt a must-flee instinct in rival networks. But the ratings success of Survivor: The Australian Outback and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation has led to Collective Realization: NBC's Arse Can Actually Be Kicked. Thursday, therefore, will again be the most competitive night on television, with Friends going up against Survivor: Africa (CBS) at 8 p.m.

and NBC's 9 p.m. tandem of Will Sf Grace and Just Shoot Me being challenged by CSI (CBS) and the Temptation Island sequel (Fox), which this time around will last 10 episodes instead of seven (Resulting marketing slogan: Temptation Island 2 -Now With 423 More Booty. Confident that viewers will not grow weary of Anne Robinson's bitchy shtick, NBC is doubling its output of Weakest Link episodes and will air the show twice each week (Sunday and Monday). A fresh arsenal of snarky barbs is currently being manufactured in sweatshops across the Bronx. The network will also introduce yet another Law 8f Order series: fittingly, this one is called Law Order: Really, Really Pushing Our Luck.

News of the edgy host with the engaging personality reached MTV executives, who signed him to a deal a month ago. Now he's getting a chance to rub shoulders with some of music's biggest recording stars. He makes his debut on May 26 as part of MTVs TRL Retirement Home, a music video highlight show to be filmed in Key West, Florida. An MTV spokesman said he believes it's the first time a Canadian has been signed as a VJ on the music network. (Ottawa-born shock comic Tom Green moved to MTV from Canada's Comedy Network as acomedy show host) It's been a quick road to success for Quddus after high school signing with Ottawa's Ben Barry Modelling Agency, co-hosting a hip hop show at the University of Ottawa radio station CHUO, then on to modelling jobs in Toronto.

Speaking from the MTV offices in New York recently, Quddus says he was pretty cool about starring a permanent MTV gig: "I'm not really nervous," he says. Tm more excited and anxious than anything else." Growing up in a home where music played constantly, his Haitian-born father, Serapin, was into merengue music, while his mother, Jacoba, was a jazz lover. Quddus soaked it all in, but moved toward hip hop, a personal favourite. He says the thrill of meeting some of his music idols will be an added bonus. "It's going to be great meeting all those artistic, creative folks, but I find the more I meet artists the more I find they're really just people," Quddus says.

MTVs Bob Kusbit says the network receives hundreds of audition tapes, but the tape sent in by Quddus stood out. "The big thing about MTV is that our people on air need to be real," says Kusbit, a senior vice-president of production. "If they look like they're acting or putting on airs, then our audience will know," Kusbit says. "Our audience antenna for B.S. is very good they can pick a fake a mile away." He says Quddus was different from the pack, he did not put on a fake persona, and he was well grounded ia different types of music "He was just cool, there's an edge to him, an edgy, cool look, so we were intrigued by all of that.

"I think hf has the great raw talent to be able to pull it off," Kusbit says. Ottawa Citizen Tue. -Thu. 6:50,9:30 AmioHTALE L.0NGJ;A"MS?EAAMon- 1:45.4:50.7:15.9:35 Tue. -Thu.
