ARTS LIFE BIS NATIONAL POST, FRIDAY, JULY 6, 2001 End of B.C. film lull in sight; Universal buys Mulholland MOVIE BUSINESS Canadian and foreign productions in B.C., and spending reached a total of The three-year deal reached Tuesday night by negotiators for the Screen Actors Guild and the Amer time last year, we had about 25 to 30 shows shooting. Right now, we have three." That's going to change later this month as 10 television series begin production, he said. Feature films, because Vancouver's feature-movie and television production will likely remain in a lull until September, despite a negotiated settlement by the Screen Actors' Guild that averted a U.S. actors strike.

But despite the summer slowdown, industry officials predict the total value of B.C. productions should increase by as much as 10 by the end of the year compared with 2000. "We've had 75 of the year's work in the first six months," said Tom Adair, executive director of the B.C. Council of Film Unions, which represents three unions with more than 5,600 members. "Now we have the rest of the year for the other 25.

At this through Universal's specialty distribution unit Universal Focus, which had success recently with Billy Elliot Mulholland Drive was originally developed as a two-hour, pilot for a TV series, but was rejected by ABC and was reconceived by Lynch as a feature film with in French funding. The extra money allowed for additional shooting and a new round of post-production. The picture is the first film from Lynch since 1999's Oscar-nominated The Straight Story, which Disney released. Lynch shared the Cannes directing prize with Joel Coen (The Man Who Wasn't There). News services ican Federation of Television and Radio Artists must now be approved by a majority of the unions' 135,000 members.

Universal has bought U.S. distribution rights to Mulholland Drive, which won David Lynch the best director prize at this year's Cannes Film Festival. The amnesia thriller will be released this fall of the longer lead time required to sign major actors and get other production aspects in place, aren't likely to resume production for eight to 10 weeks. "Work has been crammed into the beginning of the year," said Adair. "I think at the end of the year, well be up five to 10 over last year." In 2000, there were 192 Jackson hopes to sell just a few more millions Singer spends three years and a fortune on latest album Rolling Stones and Elton John, performers whose commercial strength lies in their back catalogues and live drawing power.

But, if Jackson is going to recoup the vast sums invested in him, he is going to have to tap into a new audience, the young pop consumers who are not only the most avid record buyers but, just as importantly, the principal consumers of music-related merchandise. In January, Frankfurt-based company J-Net Entertainment AG negotiated exclusive licensing rights with Jackson, with the aim of creating a new wave of Jackson toys, books and T-shirts, as well as computer-based products and even a Michael Jackson credit card. They will be hoping to emulate the success of pop acts such as U.S. boy-band the Backstreet Boys, who generated in merchandise sales last year. But pop can be a notoriously fickle business.

A company that paid for the exclusive rights to market Ricky Martin products in 1999 filed for bankruptcy last year as Martin mania fizzled out Harald Neidhardt, a New York-based consultant to MJ-Net, confidently predicts that Jackson products (such as customized laptops) will do roaring business once again, noting that he "is an artist who has been known to three generations." But the issue is surely not whether today's young pop consumers know who he is it is whether they care. After all, we're talking about a 42-year-old, twice-divorced father of two (admittedly a description that makes him sound almost normal). There is no doubt that Jackson is extraordinarily talented, but I have a sneaking suspicion that a grown man who looks like a rejected waxwork from Madame Tussaud's, and whose best friend was a monkey, may be just a little too weird to appeal to Britney Spears fans (and, frankly, not weird enough for fans of Eminem). Jackson's biggest audience is likely to be people of his own generation. And, while they may buy a few records, what self-respecting parent is going to buy the children a Michael Jackson doll? The Daily Telegraph ther impressive sales in the region of 30 million each.

But that was before his career was almost derailed by scandal, notably accusations by a 13-year-old playmate of sexual abuse in 1993 that were withdrawn following a multi-million-dollar out-of-court settlement. Although Jackson mounted a comeback with 1995's HIStory, a clever mixture of greatest hits and new material marketed with a degree of self-aggrandisement that bordered on the megalomaniac, its 15 million sales suggested that some damage had been done, particularly in the U.S. market. While he has shored up his popularity with live appearances in Europe and Asia, Jackson has not toured in the United States since the '80s. His last release, Blood on the Dancefloor, a 1997 collection of remixes with some new tracks, barely scraped past the quarter-million mark.

That would be a career high for most artists, but it strongly suggests Jackson's glory days are behind him. Recently inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame, Jackson has become what is known as a "heritage" act, like the Jerkins (the in-demand producer of Jennifer Lopez, Whitney Houston and Destiny's Child) has described as "new stuff that the ears haven't heard yet" Originally scheduled for November, 1999, the release date has been repeatedly postponed as the track listing was whittled down to a final 15. Last month, senior Sony executives were invited to the Hit Factory recording studio in Miami to hear what they had been spending their money on. "There were four or five tracks that blew me away," announced an evidently relieved Epic president, Dave Glew, although one might have thought that a handful of potential hits was the very least you could expect for Demonstrating the kind of self-depre By Neil McCormick With his artificially pale skin and surgically adjusted features, he already looks like a cadaver raised from the dead. Now, nervous music business executives are waiting to see if Michael Jackson has got what it takes to revive a moribund career.

In September, Epic (a division of Sony) will finally release Jackson's first full-length studio album in 10 years. It is reportedly the most expensive album ever made. Industry sources claim that as much as has been spent recording and re-recording 50 songs over three years in top studios with a succession of leading producers, songwriters, session musicians and guest artists. Whether through paranoia or perfectionism, Jackson has persisted in obsessively reworking material in a search for what one key collaborator, Rodney cation we have come to expect from a man who insists on being introduced as the King of Pop, the finished album is to be titled Invincible. But despite such bravura, the success of Jackson come back cannot be considered a foregone SIS li 1,1 conclusion.

22 Jackson's 51-million-selling album Thriller (1982) remains the best-selling 'if'Aj album of all tune, while both Bad (1987) and Dangerous (1991) notched up fur- IHXKISS OF THE DRAGON (R) MOULIN ROUGE (PG) Fri.
