By MICHAEL MARTIN Coulee News June Dairy Days -West Salem's annual community celebration goes on all three days this weekend and, if the weather cooperates, organizers will be bracing for big crowds.

Gerry Van Oss, treasurer of the June Dairy Days Association, expects people might be finally ready to have some fun in the great outdoors. "With (Onalaska's) Sunfish Days done and this being an outside festival, I think that if it's nice Saturday for the parade we could have a big turnout at the park afterwards," Van Oss said. The weekend begins with the West Salem Business Association kickoff breakfast at the Westview Inn. The guest speaker this year will be La Crosse County Board chairman and newly elected 94th District Rep. Steve Doyle.

The breakfast also will introduce Samuel Lester, this year's button design winner, and this year's June Dairy Days parade marshal. The carnival and grounds will open at 5 p.m. Friday afternoon. Soon after, Softball and cornhole tournaments will begin. The evening's musical headliner is Troubleshooter.

The show starts at 9 p.m., with an intermission at 10 p.m. for the fireworks display. "We've got a big show for the fireworks this year," Van Oss said, "and we've increased the ground displays that people seem to like." Things get under way early Saturday with registration for the 5 -mile run and the 5K fun runwalk at 7 a.m. The run begins at 7:50 a.m. and the runwalk at 8 a.m.
