The Board met pursuant to adjournment. Present: Supervisor: Kinsley, Wyman, Miller and Linscott, and II. II. Miller, Clerk. In the matter of the petition of D.

Anderson addressed a large congregation in the Unitarian Church Sunday morning, his topic being "Lessons Learned from Other The speaker reviewed briefly the lives at some of the few really great thinkers who haive Influenced the thought and lives of millions.

"All that is permanent and inspiring in Religion," said he, "was personified in Jesus of Nazareth. Plato has influenced every philosopher dnce his time. Shakespeare sounded the deeps of dramatic art. Naipolean is the 'patron saint of every soldier. The truly great thinker reasons from universal principles and epeaks the ages.

"All prejudices, limitations and superstitions are brushed aside in the desire to speak the truth concerning man and the universe. Emerson was one of God's modern prophets, proclaiming to humanity the religion of the spirit. A of the 19th century, he spoke to all the centuries yet to come. Who can estimate the far reaching Influence of a man like Moses, the great lawgiver? Abraham Lincoln will forever live In the memories of men and women who admire nobility of character. His influence Increases with the years.

When we speak of loyalty to a principle or a course, what better examples can we point to than Wendell Phillips and Wm. Lloyd Garrison? Lewis, Deputy County Surveyor, recommending the acceptance of the road as constructed is adopted by the Board. Supervisor Wyman moves that Bald Riverside Road be accepted. The motion is seconded and is carried by the following vote: Ayes: Supervisors llartman, Kinsley, Wyman and Supervisor Linscott is authorized to sell an old sprinkling wagon belonging to l'a-iaro Road District. The application of H. M.

Meyers, for a permit for a liquor license to business at the toll house on the Big Tree Rond, is granted. Supervisor Miller moves the adoption of an ordinance prohibiting the running of deer with hounds or dogs. Said motion is lost by the following vote: Ayes: Supervisors Miller and Wyman. Noes: Supervisors Hartman, Kinsley and Liuscott. The District Attorney Is authorized to investigate and take- necessary steps in the matter of fines collected In the Recorder Court of the Town of Boulder Creek for violation of State law.

Supervisors Wyman and Linscott are directed to Inspect the Winkle Bridge. In the matter of the ofllce of Constable of Santa Cruz Township the following resolution is now passed Resolved, by the Board of Supervisors of Santa Cruz. Coun- ty: it duly appearing to this Board that Peter A. GiUin, Constable of Santa Cruz Township, in and for said County of Santa Cruz, has, for more than 30 days, failed and neglected to perform the duties of his office as such Constable, and It is therefore ordered that the District Attorney institute such legal proceedings as are neces-sarv to declare said ofllce vacant. Tassed by the Board of Supervisors of the County of Santa Cruz, this 23d day of July, A.

D. 1900. A communication from the Hon. Lucas F. Smith, Judge of the Superior Court, In the matter of the re-constructlon of- the Court house, Is read and filed.

Upon motion of Supervisor Hartman it is ordered by the Board that Peter I'undt be and he is hereby allowed an order for $0 per month for provisions. In the matter of sale of londs of Corrail-tos School District This being the time set for the opening of bids for the purchase of said bonds and no bids having been presented, it is now ordered by the Board that the Clerk be nnd he is hereby directed to re-ndvertise in the Evening Pa-Jaronlan for bids for the purchase of said school bonds, said bids to be opened on Monday, August Oth, 1900, at 10:30 o'clock A M. 'in the matter of Insurance on County property The Clerk Is directed to Issue subpoenas to the agents of all Insurance companies carrying insurance on county property to appear before this Board on Monday, August Oth, 190(1, at 10:30 o'clock In the matter of the re construction and enlargement of the Court House of the County of Santa Cruz Be It resolved by the Board of Supervisors of the County of Santa Cruz that the Granite Rock Company, a corporation, be and It Is hereby employed to re-construct and enlarge the County Court House, In accordance with the plans and speclticatlons of E. L. Van Cleeck, architect, which said plans and- specifications have been heretofore adopted bv this Board, and be It further resolved that the terms and conditions of said employment be, and they are hereby agreed upon as follows, to-wit: That said Granite Rock Company be re-emhursed for the actual amount expended by them for labor and for new materials furnished; and that in addition thereto that they be paid an amount equal to 10 per cent of the amount so paid by them for said labor and said new That said Granite Rock Company tile an Itemized statement showing the name of each employee, together with the period of time that he worked, and the amount of wages that has been paid to him, also an itemized statement setting forth all the new materials furnished in said re-construction and enlargement of said Court House, together with the cost thereof, which said Itemized statement shall be attached to and made a part of a claim to be filed with said Board at said time for the amount so expended by said Granite Rock Company, together with said 10 per cent thereunto added, and if said claim be approved by said Board, this Board agrees to pay said claim by warrant regularly drawn on the County General Fund for the amount so found to le due; be It further Resolved that said Granite Rock Company will at once employ to work a sufficient force of mechanics and laborers to perform said work and that they will in good faith rush said work to completion; and be it further Resolved that the re-construction and enlargement of said Court House shall be done according to the plans and speciflca-w.

Warden Archibald Yell, of Folsoin prison, confirms the statement concerning the pre- carious state of Adolph Weber's health. In an Interview the warden said that he had doubts as to whether Weber would live until the date of his execution, September 12th.

Weber is kept alive on milk and stimulants, his stomach unable-to stand any other nourishment, and he does not appear to assimilate even this diet. The warden added that Dr. Gladding, the prison physician, reported to him that it iwas sjmply a matiter of how long the condemned youth could be (kept alive 'on hi3 present diet. 'Weber weighs only 100 pounds," said the warden. "He is so weak he can scarcely walk.
