La Crosse Tribune, Monday, October 21 2002 5 Obituaries The Way it Was 3 fi Karen L. Wrobel Karen L. (Olloff) Wrobel, 53, of La Crosse died Friday Oct. 18, 2002, surrounded by family, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center after a courageous battle with diabetes. She was born in La Crosse on Feb.

11, 1949, to Richard and Marion (Merfeld) Olloff. She was a graduate of La Crosse Central High School, class of 1967. Karen attended WWTC and graduated in 1974 with an associates degree in applied science and food service management with academic honors. She was a chef for Club 14 and other restaurants. She was also a volunteer for the La Crosse Community Theatre.

She loved her many cats. Her life and love was for her two sons, James and David. She married Ronald Wrobel, and they later divorced. She is survived by her two sons, James P. and David both of La Crosse; brother, Daniel (Joyce) Olloff of La Crosse; sister, Linda (Mike) Spah of La Crosse; and nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents and brother Donald. Funeral services will be held today at 1 p.m. at the Woodruff Funeral Home, 4239 Mormon Coulee Road. The Rev. David Baldukas will officiate, and burial will be at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, La Crosse.

Genevieve Jenny A. Hass Genevieve Jenny A. Hass, 90, of La Crosse died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, in Bethany St. Joseph Care Center, La Crosse.

She was born in La Crosse on Oct. 10, 1912, to Valentine and Clara (Bishop) Krajews-ki. She married Leonard A. Hass on June 18, 1932, in Holy Cross Catholic Church in La Crosse. Jenny was active as a volunteer and was espe- dally in Hass support of the Missions.

She retired from St. Francis hospital as a food service employee. Jenny was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and a great-great-grandmother. She will be missed by her family and her friends. She is survived by five daughters, Kate Burrow of Lake Delton, Mary (Eugene) Wehrenberg of Scottsdale, Bonnie (Dick) Wehrenberg of West Salem, Carol (Denis) Anderson of Lake Delton, and Jane (Doug) Vinson of La Crosse; and three sons, Fred (Ellen) Hass of Sheboygan, Jim (Mary) Hass of Cottage Grove, and Paul (Joyce) Hass of Bowling Green, Va.

She is further survived by 25 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grand-children; two sisters, Virginia Krajewski of West Salem and Valeria Heller of La Crosse; one brother, Louis (Olivia) Krajewski of La Crosse; and many nieces nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard, on Dec. 27, 1989. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct.

23, 2002, in Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 1333 S. 13th La Crosse. The Rev. Larry Berger will officiate, with burial to be held in Mormon Coulee Memorial Park, La Crosse. Friends and family may call from 4 to 8 p.m.

Tuesday at Blaschke Funeral Home, 401 West Ave. La Crosse, with a vigil to be held at 7:30 p.m. Friends and family may also call from 10:30 a.m. until the time of services in the church Wednesday. Memorials are preferred to Bethany St.

Joseph Care Center Family Room. Harlan R. Gabby Gavin Harlan R. Gabby Gavin, 77, of La Crosse died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, at the Bethany St.

Joseph Care Center, surrounded by his loving family. He was born July 13, 1925, in Moscow, Idaho, to Raymond and Juanita (Hanne) Gavin. Harlan was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving from 1943 to 1946 in the Solomon Islands, Philippines, and spending six months in Japan at the end of the war. He married Louise Bechen on Sept.

9, 1950, in Holy Trinity Catholic Church. He had worked at Northern Engraving for over 40 years, retiring in 1990. Harlan was a member of the Roy L. Vingers American Legion Post 52 and the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1920. He was well known for his artistic ability in woodworking and crafts.

He is survived by his wife, Louise; three daughters, Barbara (Mike) Wallace of La Crosse, Linda (Richard) Rhode of La Crosse and Kathleen Lawson of Caledonia, five grandchildren, Melissa Rhode of Onalaska, Rick Rhode of La Crosse, Chris Lawson of Menomonee, Andrea Lawson of Eau Claire, and Anthony Lawson of Caledonia; one stepgrand-child, Larry Wallace of Orlando, two greatgrandchildren, Nicole Wallace and Brianna Wallace; one sister, Iris (Albin) Forster of Carson City, two nephews, Craig Forster of Carson City and Steven Bechen of Kent, one niece, Janet (Murphy) Me Ginnis; and one great-niece, Caitlin Me Ginnis. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Calle Gavin; his parents; a nephew, John Bechen; and a stepgranddaughter, Lorie Kirkpatrick. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002, at 10 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.

Father Robert Hundt will officiate. Burial with military rites by the Roy L. Vingers American Legion Post 52 will be in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Friends may call at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse on Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m., and again on Wednesday from 9 a.m. until departing for church.

The Moose Lodge will have a service Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., followed by a rosary at 7 p.m. God saw that he was getting tired, And a cure was not meant to be. A golden heart stopped beating, Hard working hands now rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best. Hometown Did You Johnny Blood McNally, Green Bay Packers legend and Pro Football Hall of Fame member, played one game at fullback for the La Crosse Lagers semi-pro team. The date was Sept. 8, 1935, when the Lagers played the Packers in an exhibition game in Green Bay.

McNally had recently been released by the Packers. The Packers defeated the over-matched Lagers 49-0, and McNally was La Alvin Wimpy Miller WEST SALEM, Wis. -Alvin Wimpy Miller, 72, of West Salem died Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, at Vernon Memorial Hospital, Viroqua, Wis. He was born Nov.

2, 1929, in Barre Mills to Emil and Lilly (Oldenburg) Miller. Wimpy was a 1948 graduate of West Salem High School. After he chose the profession he had always dreamed of by attending the Reisch School of Auctioneering in Mason City, Iowa. Wimpy continued his auctioneering profession for the next 54 years until his unexpected death last Friday while conducting a sale in Viroqua. He served in the U.S.

Army from 1953 until 1955, being stationed in Fort Gordon, Ga. Upon discharge from the military, Wimpy was employed at Sears Roebuck selling farm equipment. In January 1959, he married Myrna Rae Jevne, and together they have celebrated over 43 years of marriage. They had no children. Wimpy served on the West Salem School Board from 1965 until 1970.

He and Myrna lived on a farm in Holmen for 25 years, and during this time Wimpy also served on the Holmen School Board for 17 years. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and faithfully followed the team, being a member of the Die Hard Cub Fan Club and always hoped for a team pennant. Wimpys interest in this sport lured him to Mesa, to watch Cubs spring training, where he and Myrna would spend then-winter months. Sports have always been a huge part of Wimpys life. He managed the West Salem City Baseball Team for many years and also played city team basketball and softball.

Wimpy served on the La Crosse County ASCS Committee from 1974 until 1992 and continued until the time of his death to be a director for the Shelby Mutual Insurance Co. of West Salem. Wimpy was happiest when he was working auctions. He was a member of the Wisconsin State Auctioneers Association, being inducted into their Hall of Fame in 1991, an honor he was always very proud of. Wimpy was also a member of the National Auctioneers Association.

He has touched the lives of many young people in the area as he conducted the La Crosse County Junior Interstate Livestock Sale at the fair since its beginning over 30 years ago, a job he truly enjoyed. Survivors include his wife, Myrna Rae; two brothers, Eldor of La Crosse and Gordon (Sylvia) of West Salem; a sister, Florence Brave of West Salem; along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Emil. Funeral services will be Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2002, at 11 a.m.

at St. Johns Lutheran Church, W3565 County Hwy. Barre Mills. The Rev. Andrew Schultz and the Rev.

Mark Bartling will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call at Jostad-Jandt Funeral Home, 121 N. Youlon West Salem, today from 4 -ntil 8 p.m. and at the church Tuesday from 10 a.m.
