A4 LOCAL TheStarPhoenix.com Saskatoon, Saskatchewan Tuesday, June 24, 2008 Weir raises money for children's hospital I 1 BRIEF Vv -At; 'z- By Hannah Scissons of The StarPhoenix When the Children's Hospital of Saskatchewan finally opens its doors in Saskatoon, one of Mike Weir's golf clubs will hang inside. And Weir, in turn, will have a memento of Saskatoon a key to the city in the shape of a golf tee, with the city skyline carved into its edge. Those gifts were made Monday at a "divot-breaking" ceremony at the University of Saskatchewan for the launch of the capital campaign for the children's hospital. Today, Weir is kicking off that campaign with the Mike Weir Miracle Golf Drive for Kids, which includes a round of golf at the Riverside Country Club, a golf clinic and a gala dinner. All funds raised will go toward the province's planned children's hospital.

This is the second year Weir has held his miracle golf drive the first was in London, close to where he grew up in southern Ontario. The choice of where to go next was pretty easy, said Weir. "I was surprised to hear there wasn't a children's hospital here and when we talked last year, I thought this was obviously the choice where we needed to go to," he said during the ceremony. Last year in London, the golf drive raised more than $560,000 for the children's hospital there and Weir's goals for Saskatchewan are even bigger he'd like to raise $1 million this year. He said the Health Ministry is working on an evaluation before the government announces its commitment to the project, but an announcement should come in the "not-too-distant" future.

'This project remains a top priority for the new government of Saskatchewan," Wall said. Planning for a children's hospital for the province started about 74 years ago and it's currently in the development stage, said Brynn Boback-Lane, president of the Children's Health and Hospital Foundation of Saskatchewan. While the hospital will be located somewhere on the of campus, final plans including how much money it will ultimately cost have yet to be announced. Boback-Lane said Weir's golf drive will hopefully be a pivotal event for fundraising for the children's hospital. 'To have a Canadian icon give his time and talents to the Children's Hospital Foundation lends to the viability of this major project," she said in an interview.

Weir wasn't charging the hospital foundation a single dime for his time, noted Boback-Lane, and was even covering his own costs, including the airfare to come to Saskatoon. She noted, like Weir did, that the event, like the hospital, is about the children. "It's really a universal message he's delivering. We're just the happy recipients." hscissonssp.canwest.com ii li i SP Photo by Gord Waldner Saskatoon Mayor Don Atchison presents Mike Weir with a key to the city in the shape of a golf tee "I know it's is a big initiative but it's a good start, and we'll get things started and have a fun couple of days," he said. Weir was introduced by the honorary campaign co-chairs: Brett Wilson and Catnona Le May Doan.

"Every one of us pray that our chil dren will never have to use the facility, but the reality is that many kids will," said Le May Doan Premier Brad Wall also spoke at the ceremony, saying what a thrill it had been to ask Weir what kind of wedge he used, prior to the divot-breaking swings all the dignitaries took. Pierceland RCMP responded to a call from a home 10 kilometres east of the town of Goodsoil, on the Dorintosh Road, at 6 p.m.

Friday, says a news release. The boy had left the house unobserved for a "very short" period of time and was found in the dugout moments later drowned, said the release. Convicted killer dies in custody A 58-year-old convicted killer was found dead in his room at the Regional Psychiatric Centre on Sunday. The inmate, who was serving an indeterminate sentence for second-degree murder and manslaughter, was not breathing and was unresponsive when he was discovered around 5:30 p.m., says a news release. The man had been fighting a lengthy illness and had been receiving medical treatment and care from staff at the RPC since June 19.

His prison sentence began on May 27, 1988. Whenever an offender dies in custody, the police and coroner are notified and go to the scene. The death may also become the subject of an inquest, which is common after a death in custody. Property taxes due by Monday The City of Saskatoon is reminding property owners that property taxes for 2008 must be paid by Monday to avoid penalty. Payment can be made in person at City Hall Monday to Friday from 8 a.m.

to 5 p.m. Other options to avoid last-minute lineups include paying online through Internet banking, making payments at financial institutions, paying by mail (postmarked by June 30) or dropping off payments (cheques only with payment stub) at the City Hall drop boxes. Property owners may also join the Tax Instalment Payment Plan (TIPPS), which allows property taxes to be paid in monthly instalments through automatic withdrawal from a bank account. Applications for TIPPS are available online at www.saskatoon.ca search under for Property Tax. There is a 1.25 per cent per month penalty for any overdue 2008 taxes, and an additional 1.5 percent per month penalty on any property tax arrears balances from previous taxation years.

i More homeowners going pesticide-free When volunteers for the Saskatchewan Environmental Society conducted their third annual survey to find out how many homeowners are using pesticides on their lawns and gardens this year, they were mostly preaching to the choir. About 400 residents in the City Park and Nutana neighbourhoods agreed to participate in this year's survey, and three-quarters said they intend to be pesticide-free in 2008, said Michelle Androsoff, the group's pesticide reduction co-ordinator. "More and more citizens understand how pesticides can have negative health and environmental impacts," she said. "It seems like everyone nowadays is going pesticide-free." For more information on the survey, call 665-1915. Murder suspect appears in court REGINA (SNN) As members of Richard Darnell Lowe's family looked on, a 21 -year-old man made his first court appearance charged with second-degree murder in Lowe's death.

Tyrone Worm appeared briefly in Regina provincial court on Monday, long enough to let the court know he would like legal representation on the murder charge one of two he is now facing in connection with two separate homicides. Worm has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of 48-year-old Douglas David Anderson, who died of undisclosed injuries on Nov. 18, 2006.
