I I II Batoum was the theatre of another sanguinary contest between! the Russians and the Turks on Friday of last week, the Russians again getting the worst of the. fight, losing upwards of 4,000 dead and nounded, besides several guns.

The Turks fought behind iatrenchment8, mainly, behaving with gallantry and sustaining but small loss. Batoum is near the east coast of the Black Sea in Turkey in Asia; and was the point at which the firsf battle of the present conflict was lough t. 1 A Trip to Koutuerii Mnnsnn. To the Editor of the Sovth Bend, Trtlune. Having recently returned from rather an extended trip through! southern Kansas and Colorado, allow tne to give you a brief sketch of the country as I saw it.

Entering the state at Atchison, via Atchison, Tope a Santa Fe rail- road, we pass through southern Kansas up the Arkansas river valley to the Rocky Mountains at Pueblo, Colorado, making a distance of 617 miles from the Missouri river. It is a gradual up grade of seven feet to the mile. We pass through the counties 0 Osage, Lyon, 'Chase, Harvey, Reno, Barton, J'awnee, Edwards aud Foul through the important towns which are th.e county seats of the above named counties in their order named, Topeka, Bur-lingame, Emporia, Florence, Cottoa-wood, Newton, Hutchinson, and Great Bend. All are active, thrifty towns, with good churches, school bouses and rburing mills at Emporia and Hutchln-on. Lyon county and Emporia ship ie best and most corn of any county and town in the state.

Florence fur-nishes building stone equal to the Joliet tone. Newton is the junction of the Wichita branch, and has a fine farming country around it. The lay of the land through the above named counties high and rolling; the soil; is a dark loam mixed with a vegetable mold, slightly tinctured with limej free from atone and gravel and eminently adapted to grass, grain and fruit. The subsoil is usually light and porous, giving good drainage, and retaining moisture, well while Colorado with her variety of climate, mountain scenery and mineral springs, furnishes an asylum for invalids. It lacks agricultural resour-; ces to make it the home of the while ra Kansas, both combined, health and a good farming country; to sustain it.

To those who contemplate going to Kansas to buy homes I would, offer! a word of advice: The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe railroad company have responsible agents for the sale of their lands also the government agent is responsible, but outside of this you want to look out for a set of "land scalpers," who will hang after you Until they trick you into a trade that will not be to your advantage, There is an immense amount of good land for sale in Kansas; unimproved land ranging from. 12 to 110 per acre; improved from 5 to 125. A man with moderate means would do well to go there. I Without means to sustain him and his family a year, he had better stay where he is. The grass-hoppers are a serious drawback to the country, but the farniuri apprehend but little damage from them ibis season.

The wheat looks well and a large amount of corn is up and being janted. plant corn in April and Jane, The country is, well watered with creeks and streams but there it few aj rings. Timber is scarce, hut a'ong the streams there are! skirts of it t'iat break the monotony of view that ii so painful to a man who 1 wa rai-ed in the woods. Coal is plenty in the eoutheast portion of the elate. regard to the winds, there ti certainly a bracing breeze at some seasons of the year, which is common to jany prairie country, but there are no tornados.

While there are few sections of country anywhere that beat our own St. Joseph valley, yet Kansas beats it in health alone. P. P. DcCojjb.
