12 SUNDAY, OCTOBER 21, 2018 NEWS THEPROVINCE.COM DOUGLAS TODD Langley City residents have elected one-term council member Val van Den Broek to replace retiring mayor Ted Scha er. Van den Broek, who won with 50 per cent of the ballots, is a federal public servant with the RCMP. She rst ran for council in 2014 and won. The 18-year resident of Langley got 2,446 votes in preliminary results. Peter Fassbender, a former education minister under the B.C.

Liberals, failed in his attempt to return as city mayor. He held the post from 2005 to 2013. He received 46 per cent of the votes. In the 2013 provincial election Fassbender was elected as a B.C. Liberal in the riding of Surrey-Fleetwood.

In addition to serving as education minister, he was minister responsible for TransLink. He lost the riding in 2017 to the Jagrup Brar The voters of the sprawling Township of Langley handed a third term to Mayor Jack Froese, after two le critics, Kim Richter and Eric Woodward, opted against running against him and instead pursued council seats. Froese took 14,855 votes, compared to only 8,407 for second-place mayoral candidate Anna Remenik. The strategy of not opposing the mayor worked for Richter and Woodward; both were elected to council. Woodward came in second and Richter third.

The councillor who took the most ballots was David Davis, with preliminary results showing he had more than 12,029 votes. The pace of change and development has been a key source of tension. The population of the Township of Langley grew by 13 per cent between 2006 and 2011, with expanding housing projects abutting farmland. Froese has said proud of the way his council has responded to growth concerns. Froese, who grew up in a farming family and has lived in Langley for 40 years, believes adequate ort is being made to protect the farmland.

He denies Langley is growing too fast, welcomes residential towers and supports expansion of the controversial Trans-Mountain pipeline, which runs through the district. Braun took 57 per cent of the vote, compared to 18 per cent for newcomer Eric Nyvall and 18 per cent for longtime councillor Moe Gill. Popove beat incumbent mayor Sharon Gaetz by about 1,000 votes. happy for myself, and for our Braun said as results came in means continuity and stability.

Council has done a ton of foundational work on our new OCP (O cial Community Plan) The election marked the end of a long stint in local politics for Gill. The mayoral candidate served on Abbotsford council since 1996 and was the rst Indo-Canadian elected to a local government in the Fraser Valley. Eric Nyvall came third in the race for mayor. The accountant made several big-ticket promises, vowing to work toward bringing the Canucks farm team to Abbotsford, win the war on gang crime and improve the city-owned golf course and softball elds. Seven incumbent councillors were also elected, including four members of the AbbotsfordFIRST slate.

Also elected was Bruce Banman, former Abbotsford mayor. In Chilliwack, Gaetz was seeking a fourth term as mayor. She was rst elected to council in 1996 and became rst female mayor in 2008. Last election, Gaetz faced marginal opposition, easily winning the chair with more than double the combined votes of her two challengers. In 2011, she was acclaimed.

But this time, the former minister was challenged by two members of her own council, Popove and Sam Waddington. A two-term city councillor and owner of a tire business, Popove is a well-regarded community advocate and was endorsed by former mayor Clint Hames. He also managed to steer clear of the controversy over expense claims, which were referred to an independent auditor a few weeks before election day.
