THE KANSAS CITY TIMES, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 17, 1963 13 yA.bout Emu Mike likes to attend K. U. football games whenever he can get near them and he went to last Saturdays battle with Iowa State at Lawrence. I think Im a Jinx but Ive never lost my loyalty to the school, he said. Believe it or not Ive never seen Kansas win a game on my trips back to Lawrence, however.

Youd think over the years that I could cheer for at least one victory, but I guess I'm a hoodoo. I went to the game Saturday with Dana Durand and they told me that Kansas was a 12-point favorite so I thought maybe I would see them win a game, but no such luck. I take 15 minutes of exercises every morning, on the road or at home, he answered. Thats the first thing I do after I. get out of bed in the morning, whether I'm in Hollywood, Kansas City or New York.

I take that paraphernalia out and start pulling weights, do knee bends, push-ups for a quarter of an hour, never miss a day. Sure, the weights are heavy to lug around and bellboys and porters look at me as though I were crazy, but I weighed 185 pounds when I got out of college and I weigh 185 pounds now. Whereupon, Mike grabbed your reporter with a hammer-lock and illustrated other wrestling holds on him. We know you are in great shape, the reporter conceded, Let go of me, you big ox, The Flintstones. gr SEE 7WE SA 9Zfr TOOTH KITTY SEE THE PiNOSALIR CHEWING A BONE Mike was asked the location of his Fountain of Youth that keeps him looking so young.

By Landon Laird saw Mike North the other day. He was in town as agent for Mil-bum Stone and Amanda Blake, stars of the Gunsmoke television series who came here to appear at the American Royal. Mike looks about 23 years old. He told us he was 48. We refused to believe it and he argued: Look, youve known me 20 years yourself since I did a dance act at the Tower theater.

That was around 1943 and its a cinch I wasn't hitting taps and hot licks when I was 3 years old. Be yourself, man. I was graduated from K. U. in 1939 and your figures wouldnt have had me bora by then.

Mike, 6 feet 1 inch tall and weighing 185 pounds, is handsome and a real good guy. His given name was Ted North, and he is the son of Ted North of Topeka, whose tent shows toured this part of the country for years. The boy got a chance in the movies under the famous director, Michael Curtiz, who didnt like the name of Ted North because he said it sounded too much like a cowboy star. What other name would you suggest? young North asked. Why not become Michael North, after me? Curtiz said, placidly.

So Ted North, changed his name to Mike North, and has been that ever since. BIG GEORGE! Peanuts. PElNiir5 tnM, I Of- They're from Boston so their cabin is a broad A-frame. Word Came TODAYS WORD VICARIAL (Vicarial: vy KAR i al. Acting as a vicar).

Twenty-nine years previously Baxter, a drug salesman who longed to act, got his first walk-on part in a North company. North, wrote Baxter after the latter became famous that young North was eager to get a chance in Hollywood. Baxter was leaving the Twentieth Century Fox studios in Hollywood himself, but among his last official acts was to see to it that young North got a screen test and he carried on the negotiations that led to a movie contract for the boy. Mike made several pictures and married Mary Beth Hughes, film star, and the couple had a son. Mike and Mary Beth were divorced and Mike married again 11 years ago.

He and his wife have two girls and live in Beverly Hills, Calif. Mike turned from being an actor to becoming an actors agent and he never has regretted the change. He represents many stars. Red Skelton among them. His work handling his clients personal appearances takes him around the country a lot, but he always likes to get back to Kansas City as he has so many friends here, many of them dating back to his college days at Lawrence where he was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity.

The simple truth is: If children have no religious training, they will grow up in a spiritual haze and will fall a prey to any shabby belief that comes along. The Bible says, Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it! Our children have a right to know the best we have learned about music, literature, history, science and art. Should we deprive them of the best we have learned about our relationship to God; the best we have learned about faith centers in the New Testament, and in Christ? Should we share other learning, but spare these things so vital to their development? I would no more deprive my children of Christian teaching than I would let them set out to learn history and mathematics on their own. Why not expose them to the garnered wisdom of centuries?
