But Lucretia Coonrod actually sees similarities in breeding German shorthair dogs and her job at in the agronomy department at Kansas State University, where she's involved in producing other prize winners: strains of wheat. "When I talk to dog people and tell them 1 work with wheat breeding, they'll ask, 'What's "Winning best in show is something you dream of, but it is so elusive you never think it will happen." Lucretia Coonrod researcher in agronomy department at Kansas State University the Coonrod said.

"People don't realize there's not a lot of difference between dogs versus plants when it comes to the breeding strategy." "So I find myself educating the dog people a little bit," she said. "Whether it's wheat or dogs, neither happens by accident when things turn out great." What turned out really great at the 129th Westminster show was the highly publicized best- of-show award that went to a 5- year-old German shorthair named Ch. Kan-Point's VJK Autumn Roses, but known familiarly as Carlee. Carlee, who wasn't considered a favorite going into the competition, won out over more than 2,500 other dogs from among 165 breeds and varieties. That meant a round of appearances on the morning television talk shows, and later with comic David Letterman on his late night show.

The dog bred at Coonrod's Kan-Point Kennel in Olsburg belongs to a couple from Castle Rock, where she enjoys life in the mountains. "Winning best in show is something you dream of, but it is so elusive you never think it will happen," Coonrod said. "Like winning an Oscar, you never think there is a big chance it will actually happen." The win has brought extraordinary response to Coonrod's kennel. Waiting when she returned to Kansas were more than 700 e-mail messages from potential customers wanting a German shorthair. The demand far outpaces the supply, since Coonrod rarely raises more than one litter of pups per year.

"I've barely had 20 litters over the years, and I take each of them very seriously," said Coonrod, who's been operating the kennel since 1987. "I raise them in the house and put a lot into it and expect great things out of every litter I breed, although I don't always get the results I want."
