The Pittsburg woman saw a dentist about six hours later, receiving a much lieeded cleaning and a filling. "It feels good to have it taken care of be- dause I have been in pain with this tooth she said. "It was frustrating be- qause whenever I would eat anything, it lurtbad," About 1,000 people lined up Friday at 1 llttsburg State University for free dental from the Mission of Mercy clinic.

Dentists had provided 650 fillings and 1,301 extractions, worth about $328,000, as of 4 p.m. Friday said Nlci Gustafson, operations coordinator of the Kansas Dental Association. The clinic in Pittsburg will run through today Others have been held in Kansas City and Garden City The Mission of Mercy came to Kansas after Dr. John Tilton. of Wichita, and his colleague Jeffrey Stasch, of Garden City participated in a similar program in Virginia.

"Between Jeff Stasch and me, we had tenacity to get some people on board to get the first one to happen," Tilton said. "Once it happened, the snowball just Lindsborg Rep. Clark Shulz led the applause Wednesday for Salina South junior Cassandra Mitchell and Canton- Galva senior John Larson along with five other Kansas scholars honored by lawmakers for their power finish in the ACT Assessment. Scoring a perfect 36, they are among an elite 10 such students in the state. How did they do it? Practice makes perfect, both Mitchell and Larson agreed.

Mitchell took the standardized test four times over the A A A A A 1 I 11 -years. Lar' son took it five times. Both scored high previously but were a Uttle surprised at their last attempt. "1 never imagined I'd do so well," Mitchell said. "I never expected to get a 36," Larson said.

Turkey shooter Perhaps calling Kansas legislators a bunch of turkeys is nothing new. But Gov Kathleen Sebelius took a novel jab at the old putdown while addressing a firefighters conference the week before lawmakers returned to Topeka for their annual wrap- up session. Sebelius told the group she had just returned from the Governor's Annual One-Shot Turkey Hunt near El Dorado. "I thought that was the best way to prepare for the Legislature to return," she quipped. Legislators may want to watch their backs.

Sebelius bagged a 17-pound bird at the April 17 hunt. Test takers The day before the wrap-up session convened. Rep. Melvin Neufeld, R-Ingalls, offered a tour to the senior class from his alma mater, Ingalls High School, where he was a member of the class of 1958. Neufeld tried to impress upon the students how much time had passed since then.

"That was so long ago I had to take a test to graduate from the eighth grade and go on to high school," Neufeld said. At that. Principal Skyla Renick, who was escorting the group, poked her head around a student and smiled. "Because of No Child Left Behind," she said, "you still have to take a test to move on to high school." Prisoners VS. pupils A Topeka elementary school band teacher used a little math to make his point during a school funding rally at the Capitol Wednesday Kevin Harry waved a sign showing the difference between Kansas' per-pupil school funding of $3,863 and per-prisoner funding of $19,775 for next year Harry said he is worried about Topeka school district's plan to cut several employees if the Legislature doesn't come through with more aid.

The list includes some elementary music teachers. Harry also painted the prisoner-student figures on his car's back window. "I've gotten a lot of positive response from that," he said. "To me it's a pretty stunning difference." Hanging up his fedora John Petterson, who covers the Kansas Legislature for The Kansas City Star, will retire this summer after nearly 40 years of writing about Kansas politics. The Legislature honored Petterson Thursday with resolutions in the House and Senate.

The Star also hosted a reception for the veteran newsman. Petterson has covered 37 legislative sessions. He started his career with the Topeka newspaper in 1962 and covered his first legislative session in 1967. Later that year, he started writing for The Wichita Eagle- Beacon before moving in 1983 to the Kansas City staff, where he has remained ever since. Senate President Dave Kerr, R-Hutchinson, was the lead sponsor of the Senate resolution, which said his articles "have been widely read and recognized for their insight and completeness." Worker memorial Senate Minority Leader Anthony Hensley proposed a resolution this week to honor those killed in accidents on the job.

"Last year, 42 of our fellow Kansans lost their lives in the workplace," the Topeka lawmaker said before senators passed a statement memorializing them. At the request of the AFL- CIO and affiliated unions, the Senate named April 28 as Worker Memorial Day in Kansas. "Despite OSHA's best efforts, an American worker is injured on the job every six seconds and is killed by a job-related injury every 47 minutes," Hensley said. 'A hundred thousand more die a slow death from cancer, lung disease or other disabling conditions caused by exposure to toxics at work." He encouraged the state to renew its commitment to prevent the tragedies. Family finds missing body By The Associated Press LA CYGNE The body of a man who was reported missing almost a month ago was discovered in a creek hours after family and friends began searching Saturday afternoon.

Alonzo Brooks, 23, ner, was last seen at a party on April 4 near La Cygne in eastern Kansas. The 51-member search party found the body in a creek about 2 p.m. Saturday said Alvin Brooks, a spokesman for Move Up, an urban progress group in Kansas City On the Record keeps getting bigger and bigger." Dentists, doctors, dental hygienists and others volunteered to work on hundreds of patients each day of the clinic, Marty Bezel, a city commissioner, to volunteer at 5 a.m. She said she has been impressed with how grateful everyone waiting at the clinic has been, especially since many of them haven't slept since Thursday "They have been here for hours," she said, "and they are being overwhelmingly grateful."
