18 Wednesday, May 2, 1979 News of Sports back will Packers' 1st choice Running Sj V. GREEN BAY, Wis. (API Chances are a running back more specifically, a fullback type with speed will be the Green Bay Pack-ers' first pick in the National Football League draft Thursday. The Packers, of course, have needs at other ij: positions, although their remarkable success in the annual grab bag of collegiate talent the past two years has filled many of the holes Bart Starr inherited when he became coach and gen- eral manager more than four years ago. The Packers would like more speed at full-back to complement halfback Terdell Middle-ton, who rushed for 1,116 yards last year.

They could use help at defensive tackle, more depth in the defensive backfield and more speed at tight end David Beverly, whose punts averaged just 35 5 yards last year, likely will be replaced. V. Smith of Miami, and Dan Hampton of Arkansas and receiver Jerry Butler of Clemson. The Packers are to draft 16th on the second round, which would give them the 44th player to be taken. The Packers will have 12 choices in the 12 rounds.

They will have single picks in the first, second, third, sixth and ninth through 12th rounds. Besides their own seventh and eighth round picks, they are to get San Diegos No. 7 in the Buchanon trade and San Franciscos No. 8 to complete a 1978 deal which sent guard Steve Knutson to the 49ers. The Packers owe their fourth and fifth round picks to the New York Jets to complete the 1978 trade which brought defensive tackle Carl Bar-zilauskas to Green Bay.

Possible draftees from the state are, besides Johnson, receivers David Charles and Pete Thompson of Carroll, center Jim Moore of Wisconsin, linebackers Dave Crossen of Wisconsin and Joel Williams of UW-La Crosse, defensive back John Fonaas of UW-White-water, defensive lineman Jay Hautala of UW-Oshkosh, cornerback Greg Gordon of Wisconsin and running back Ira Matthews of Wisconsin. However. Corrick added, Were not going to go out and take a guy who plays cornerback just to have one." Russ Erxleben of Texas is expected to be the first punter taken on the first round since Ray Guy of Oakland a few years ago. The Packers response if Erxleben, also a placekicker, is still available on their turn would be interesting, for an exceptional punter could be enough to decide the race in the National Conferences well balanced Central Division. Starr was asked whether the Packers, seeking to fill specific holes and more depth at every position, would shy away from drafting a kicker on the first round.

I don't know if we would shy away from it, but it would take a lot of thought to make him (Erxleben) that, he said. We are giving it a lot of thought. He would be a good choice. Others expected to go on the first round are quarterback Jack Thompson of Washington State, offensive tackle Keith Domey of Penn State, guards Greg Roberts of Oklahoma and Pat Howell of Southern California, defensive end A1 Harris of Arizona State, linebacker Tom Cousineau of Ohio State, defensive tackles Don The Packers, who are to draft 15th on the first round, insist they will choose the best player available, regardless of position. But simple arithmetic indicates that player will be a running back because of the unusual abundance of talent at that position.

Scouts predict any-where from five to nine running backs will be taken on the first round. likely be number of talented fullbacks, including 6-foot-2. 220 pound Theotis Brown of UCLA; 6-1, 220 Steve Atkins of Maryland; 6-2, 224 Greg Hawthorne of Baylor; 5-10. 203 Kenny King of Oklahoma. and 64, 215 Russell Davis of Michigan.

Eddie Lee Ivery of Georgia Tech is projected as a halfback, but at 6-feet and 210 could also play fullback. Ted Brown of North Carolina State is highly regarded, but at 5-9 and 190 probably is the wrong size to team with Middleton. Kellen Winslow of Missouri, considered the best tight end prospect in years, is expected to be among the first half dozen players chosen. Also likely to go early is Mike Bell of Colorado State, rated the best defensive tackle in the pool. Having traded all-pro Willie Buchanon to San Diego, the Packers probably have upgraded their priority for drafting a cornerback.

However, second year player Estus Hood is slated to replace Buchanon, and there is a scarcity of good comerbacks in the draft. Dick Corrick, Green Bays player personnel director, said he rates Wisconsin's Lawrence Johnson the best cornerback in the draft. It's NFL Theres less than 24 hours remaining before it is stick in your thumb and pull out a plum time. That is what National Football League teams hope to do as they participate in the college draft, which begins at 9 a.m. CDT Thursday.

The 28 NFL teams will choose in reverse order of last years finish. However, the Buffalo Bills own the No. 1 pick. The Bills received the top choice from the San Francisco 49ers, which traded away its first-round choice in 1979, among others, for O.J. Simpson.

The Green Bay Packers will pick 15th and the Minnesota Vikings 16th in the first round. The Packers will have 12 choices in the 12 rounds over the two-day period. Packer needs are widespread, but if history repeats itself. Green Bay will probably take an offensive player, more than likely a halfback or quarterback with its first pick. In every year ending with the number nine, except 1969, Green Bay drafted a running back or quarterback in the first round.

In 1939, Coach Curly Lambeau picked halfback Larry Buhler from the University of plum-picking time Bills expected to pick Ohio State's Cousineau "Obviously, its one of our needs. Thats not any big secret," Starr said of speculation he will take a running back on the first round. Whether one we want will be there, we really dont know. Starr and his staff have conducted mock drafts the past several days. "We want to make our decisions well in advance of the draft," he said.

"We have tried to pick people off the board as we would take them, not necessarily as the names might disappear by the league, but as we would take them. "Therefore, if that man is there, and we have said we would take him, and he is still there on the second or third round, our decision has been made, he said. Weve kicked these names around at length and were ready for the decision depending on who is there. Were extremely well prepared and we feel very comfortable. Halfback Charles Alexander of Louisiana State and fullback Ottis Anderson of Miami, rated the best backs available, are expected to be taken long before the Packers first turn.

However, they could have their choice of a Cincinnati is next, followed by Chicago, Buffalo again and Baltimore. Its unlikely any of these teams will use the pick on a quarterback. With the seventh pick in the draft, the New York Giants, 6-10 last year, are in a position to select a player who can step in and start and that may be Thompson, who is 6-3 and 215 pounds. Thompson, however, has had a series of shoulder problems and the number one quarterback selected could be Steve Fuller of Clemson, who is a two-time Atlantic Coast Conference player of the year. Other quarterbacks are Phil Simms of Moorhead State, Jeff Rutledge of Alabama, Rick Leach of Michigan State and Chuck Fusina of Penn State.

The top running backs are Charles Alexander of LSU, O.J. Anderson of Miami, Ted Brown of North Carolina State and Theotis Brown of UCLA. Jerry Butler of Clemson is the top receiver around. There is speculation that the Bills might be able to parlay their second choice in the first round into a trade for an established player. Los Angeles is one team mentioned.

Bob Lamb Assistant Sports editor Buchanon has been traded. Green Bay Coach Bart Starr's philosophy is to build a championship team through the draft. It is apparent Starr is sticking to his guns. The Packers have seven first-round picks on their roster McGeorge, running back Barty Smith, offensive tackle Mark Koncar, defensive ends Mike Butler and Ezra Johnson, wide re ceive James Lofton and linebacker John Anderson. Green Bay also has four second-round draftees in defensive end-tackle Bob Barber, place kicker Chester Marcol, offensive tackle Greg Koch and linebacker Mike Hunt.

The Packers also have three third-round picks, two No. 4s and four No. 5s, one No. 6 and two No. 8s on their present roster.

We may not know who the Packers intend to draft, but Thursday night that name will be added to the other Packers whom we readily know by their jersey numbers. In 1949, Lambeau tabbed quarterback Stan Heath, a Milwaukee native, who starred at the University of Nevada. In 1959, Coach Vince Lombardi picked quarterback Randy Duncan of the University of Iowa. However, Duncan opted for the Canda-dian Football league. Bflt in 1969, Coach Phil Bengtson drafted defensive tackle Richie Moore of Villanova No.

1. Although quarterback is not a Packer priority this year, running back may be. However, the Packers need help in other areas, too. For instance, they may draft a tight end to replace the aging Rich McGeorge or they may draft a defensive interior lineman. They also need help with their punting game and could use some depth in the defensive backfield now that Willie Brewers feel Manning's punch spot for quite a while.

CLEVELAND (AP) Milwaukee Manager George Bamberger called it a pitchers battle whose outcome was determined by a home run. But some lineup changes may also have had a role in the Cleveland victory.

Indians' Manager Jeff Torb-org, under pressure from management because of Clevelands poor showing to date, made at least one move Tuesday that pleased the observers. Center fielder Rick Manning moved into the third spot in the Cleveland lineup and drove home all the Indians' runs in a 3-1 victory over the Brewers. It was the first time since 1976, when Frank Robinson was the Cleveland manager, that Manning had hit in the third position. Monge limited the Brewers to one hit in the final three innings, gaining his third save of the season. That was a real good job by Mike, Torborg said.

"Its by far the most pitches hes thrown in any outing this year, and he was using his fast ball effectively. We noticed the last couple of times out that he was kind of pitching backward using his breaking stuff to start hitters off and then coming with his fast ball, he said. I told him to go back to the way he was pitching when he was winning games for the Red Sox two years ago. The Brewers and Indians meet again tonight, with Wayne Garland (0-2) scheduled to go for Cleveland against Moose Hais (0-1). By the Associated Press Buffalo is expected to make Ohio State linebacker Tom Cousineau the number one selection in the pro football draft Thursday.

Buffalo, 5-11 last year, got the No. 1 pick in the trade which sent O.J. Simpson to San Francisco last season. Although the Bills are expected to make the 230-pound Cousineau their first pick, second-year Coach Chuck Knox and College Scouting Director Norm Pollom maintain they havent decided yet. Were just not ready to say right now, said Pollom.

There are things going on things were checking out. We ll try to make our decision based on the best information at our disposal. The Bills have a history of poor drafts, but last year Knox and Pollom reversed things with three players Terry Miller, Dee Hardson and Lucius Sanford who made the NFLs all-rookie team. The Kansas City Chiefs, who have the second selection, have eyed Washington State quarterback Jack Thompson, but theyre expected to try and shore up the other end of the passing (and pass-blocking) game by taking tight end Kellen Winslow of Missouri. It was Kathy who was largely instrumental in breaking down the sex barrier in the hallowed Boston Marathon. Now she has trained her guns on a broader and more powerful force, the Olympic Games. She is leading the fight to allow women to compete as the men do in the traditional distance races of 5.000 and 10,000 meters as well as the 26-mile. 385-yard marathon. The longest womens race in the Olympics is 1.500 meters, the vivacious, dark-haired champion of women's athletic rights says.

"That is discriminatory. Medical evidence has shown that women have as much endurance as men, if not more, even if men do possess more speed, and power. Logan struggling He responded with a run-scoring single in the first inning and a two-run homer, his first of the season, in the third. The pitching recipient of Manning's contributions with the bat was Mike Paxton, who evened his record at 1-1 with relief help from Sid Monge. It really gave me a boost to walk in tonight and see my name in the third spot, Manning said.

I hit there my first two years (in 1975 and 1976) and I really liked it. The thing about hitting third is a lot of times youre going to get a chance to hit with men on base, he said. If I get on base, the four, five and six hitters are coming up and I have a real good chance to score. He was relieved by Ken Dahl, who went one inning before giving benefits that accrue from running.

While jogging is the fastest growing sport in this country, 45 percent of our women get little or no exercise at all. There are only 4,000 women marathoners in the United States compared with 40,000 men. As an undergraduate at Syracuse University, Kathy ran with the men's cross country teams and outlasted many of her male counterparts. We were told that there must be at least 25 countries involved. So we have 29 for West Germany.

I don't see how they can knock us back any longer. "Marathon running for women is mushrooming everywhere. Australia has written it wishes to stage a national meet. Japan is planning three. Similar reaction comes from Spain, France and Germany.

"It's amazing the physical and psychological It is too late now, but our aim is to have a full program of women's distance events on the 1984 Olympic program in Los Angeles. Miss Switzer, renowned for crashing the allmale Boston Marathon in 1967, is organizer and director of a womens international running circuit, which has spread to more than a score of countries throughout the world. The International Marathon Championship, with top women runners from 29 countries, will be staged Sept. 22 in Waldniel, West Germany. The five U.S.

representatives for this event will be chosen at the National AAU Championships over the slightly shorter 30-kilomeer (18.6 miles) distance Friday in Springdale, Ohio, just outside Cincinnati. The women's bid for Olympic recognition at Moscow was rejected on the grounds that international interest in marathon running was not that prevalent throughout tly world. Jock Semple, a dour Scotsman who was codirector of the race, wasn't amused. He leaped out of his official car and began struggling to pull Miss Switzer out of the race. Amie, the pixyish little coach, couldnt help much.

But Kathy's boyfriend, a burly shotput-ter named Tom Miller, came to her rescue. The pictorial sequence of this action became legendary. Kathy went on to finish the race in four hours, 20 minutes. She appeared in seven subsequent races, finishing all, with a best time in 1975 of two hours, 51 minutes. The ban against women was lifted in 1972.
