CANADA Aug Astronomers attending the meeting of the American Astronomical Society here at the Dominion observatory felt cramped for room today They heard from Dr Ludwik Silberstein mathematical physicist of the Cinemg Laboratories Corpoption in Neav York that no two objects in the universe can be farther apart than 9 million light years A light year is about 6 million million distance a beam of light would travel in a year Thus 9 million light years could be written as a number of miles by the number fifty-four followed by eighteen ciphers MUST REVISE CONCLUSIONS Though such a huge figure might seem large enough to provide all the room needed Dr Silberstein's figures if correct will necessitate a radical revision of some of the most sensational conclusions of the astronomers in recent years What Dr Silberstein has done is to determine the radius of curvature of space-time Once it was thought the iniverse was infinite in extent that no matter how far or Last one traveled he would never reach a boundary or retrace his path But Einstein changed this According to his theory as developed by the Dutch astronomer De Sitter the universe or space in which we live is finite and not infinite yet it is without boundary An ant walking on a sticky billiard ball would be in a somwhat similar position It could not leave the surface of the ball yet could walk around it without coming to an end Eventually it would retrace its former steps and so would we if we went long and far enough Thus say the advocates of these ideas which are rather generally accepted among astronomers FOURTH DIMENSION A DIttEVENCE The chief difference between the billiard ball and our space time apart from size is that the former has three dimensions while our universe has at least four These are length breadth and height and a fourth that our senses are unable to perceive Therefore we are not aware of its curvature But Dr Silberstein who is the author of one of the best and most difficult of the technical books on Einstein's ries' has worked out a formula for computing out this radius from the velocities of distant stars Previously it had been thought that the circumference of this curved space was of the order of many thousand light years Recent work has been done at the Mt Wilson observatory on the spiral nebulae distant star systems like our own Milky Way to which the sun belongs Their distance seemed to be as much as 140 million light years for a group of faint nebulae in the constellation of the Virgin Virgo 'There are no distances in our space at any rate exceeding 9 million light years" he declared with a flash of his eyes "Therefore the present placing of Virgo at 140 million is utterly inadmissible LOTS OF WORIC AHEAD However if his figures prove correct there will still be room for plenty of astronomical objects to keep the astronomers busy for a long time to come "The total volume of space is greet enough to leave ample room for some millions of galaxies comparable in size with our own Milky Way" he said And then of course there may be something else outside our space in a still higher dimension but the astronomers have no way of determining this awl so they do not discuss it FIRE IN SCHOOL FOIE BLIND ONTARIO CANAD Astronomers attending the meeting Star's Science service 3 OTTAWA A Aug 27- of American Astronomical Society thheere at the Dominion expressed a desire to be relieved of any responsibility for- the location of filling stations The Beach ordinance would do that in a great majority or cases It would make filling station permits generally dependent on zoning If Eurroundings were zoned for business use and no harm could be done to residential property the filling station would have its rights fixed by law But if there was residential zoning within 200 feet every property owner within 300 feet cluld have -to right to protest against a filling station and a 10 per cent protest would kill a station proposal Only in cases where there was less than a 10 per cent protest would the council have anything to do with the matter Mayor Beach has consulted with some members of the council but does not know how the ordinance far frem the Carey place is a former saloon man and lives at 5f108 Locust street He withdrew $2700 from Carey's bank account and according to his statement to Spellman gave the money to Carey The
