Friday, August 20, 1993 Saskatoon, Saskatchewan The StarPhoenix B2 Sports Smith pulls pin alter foulinq out Football Huskies hit the road CS4-0437 PROVINCIAL (ll.J. I UH.I I. I .1.11 I. hi Hill .,.1 Him ri'iiiYimnnn i irijimiH gry, you're sad. There's a lot of emotions going through you at one time.

It was just tough for me to sit there throughout the third round of the long jump. I just wanted to get up and leave right there." After the other athletes were marshalled to the third event, Smith left the stadium. "I couldn't go through eight other events, knowing I had that zero (points on the long jump) just because I know I can compete on a world-class level. For me to slug away and beat up on myself for eight other events just didn't hit me as something fun to do over the next two days." Smith said he'll either continue training for a decathlon in France this fall, or take a rest now and recommence training in September. "You gotta go on and that's what I plan to do.

I'm going to move forward from here." Dan O'Brien of the United States, the defending champion and world record-holder, took the lead after three events. He has 2,832 points. Paul Meier of Germany stood second with 2,728, followed by Christian Schenk of Germany with 2,613. In other events, Sergei Bubka made history then blasted referees for ruining his attempt at a MICHAEL SMITH shocked, angry, sad world record. Bubka cleared six metres to win the pole vault and became the first athlete to win four titles in the world track and field championships.

He first won in 1983 at age 19 and now has won the pole vault in all four subsequent editions of the championships. Sally Gunnell of Britain broke the world record in the 400-metre hurdles and Merlene Ottey of Jamaica won gold in the women's 200 metres to end 13 years of frustration. Gunnell shattered the record by a remarkable two-tenths of a second with a time of 52.74 seconds. Hurlers lose two at nationals The Saskatoon Olympic Hurlers went 0-2 at the national slow pitch championships in Moncton, N.B. on Thursday.

The Hurlers lost SM to Newfoundland in their first game. Mike Sargent had three hits. In their second gar. the Hurlers were thrashed 19-6 by Quebec, the defending national champions. Todd Murdock, Derek Leedahl and Kelly Shumay had a home run each in that game.

The Hurlers have a 4-4 record and play Ontario this morning. Duncan wins Sask Sport award Rower Tracy Duncan of Saskatoon is the Sask Sport athlete of the month for July. Duncan won a gold medal in lightweight women's double sculls at the World University Games in Buffalo and was named to the Canadian lightweight fours team for the world championships in the Czech Republic, Sept. 1-5. Other nominees for the award were Dawn Birley for taekwon do, long jumper Vanessa Monar-Enweani, baton twirler Cindy Goldie, sail boarder Stefan Lidington, judoka Crystal Longman and the provincial junior racquetball team.

Lazers win title The Lome's Lazers Softball team defeated Bridge City Towing 3-1 Thursday to win the Saskatoon Amateur Softball Association's women's Division I league championship. Lazers won the best-of-three series 2-1. The winning pitcher was Lynne Brown. The losing pitcher was Laurie Galloway.

Junior Eagles champs The Saskatoon Junior Eagles defeated Perfection Paint and Body 5-1 Thursday to win the Saskatoon Amateur Softball Association's special men's division championship. The Eagles won the best-of-three series 2-0. Thursday's winning pitcher was Ryan Dahlseide. He was aided with home runs from Kirt Blatz and Trevor Salamondra. The losing pitcher was Tim Ryan.

The next action for the Eagles will be at the Canadian junior baseball championships in Summerside, P.E.I. Aug. 23-29. in Lobstick final WORLD STUTTGART, Germany (CP) Michael Smith sat slumped on a bench, a towel draped over his head and remained motionless for what seemed like a duration. Smith was pondering what went wrong to cause him to foul on all three attempts at the long jump at the world track and field championships Thursday.

The miscue prompted the decathlete to drop out of his event. "It's Indescribable, I guess," said Smith, a 25-year-old native of Kenora, who trains in Toronto. "It's shock. You're numb. I was numb from doing that.

I'd seen it happen many times. I've had my share of these kind of things but at this level, the world championships, this Is quite a blow." Smith was considered a serious medal threat. After all, he was a silver medallist at the 1991 world championships. A medal appeared within his grasp at last year's Barcelona Olympics, but a nagging hamstring injury he concealed leading up to the Games proved his downfall and he was forced to withdraw. After fouling his first two attempts, Smith ran through the pit on his third attempt after realizing his foot was well past the takeoff board.

"It's very emotional. You're an Lawson, Then there were two. The 58th annual women's Lobstick golf tournament at Waskesiu is down to the final two in the championship flight. The final should prove an interesting one, pitting five-time champion Pat Lawson of Saskatoon against relative newcomer Sherry Anderson of Prince Albert. "I think this is my fifth year or so in the tournament but only my second time in championship flight," said Anderson, after downing Humboldt's Deanna Klusa in 16 holes in Thursday's semi-final.

"I missed (the championship flight last year) and won the first flight. The year before that I lost to Pat Lawson in the quarter-finals and played just brutal. It was one of those days when I was just scared to hit the ball." This year, however, Anderson has more confidence and more rounds under her belt. "I played a lot more golf this year. I didn't have a membership anywhere before, but this year I bought a membership (at Cooke municipal in Prince Albert) and I've probably played 20 more rounds than I normally do.

I'm hitting the ball better and I'm in better shape because of that," she said. While Anderson is fairly pleased with her performance at the 1993 Lobstick, Lawson admits she has been struggling. "I haven't really had a good summer. I haven't been very, Those in the know say she's still recovering at the Stedman Clinic in Vail, where she went after being discharged from the Hamburg hospital. So why hasn't Seles and her doctors come forward to clear the air about the seriousness of the injury? "Monica has had a history of being a very private person and not wanting to really deal with these matters publicly," said Smith.

"In this case I guess she feels that she would rather keep it to herself." in the first major upset of the tourney, unseeded Julie Halard advanced Thursday to the quarter-finals, beating third seeded Gabriela Sabatini, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7-3). "Anyone who plays against me, I guess, has nothing to lose, so they take risks," said Sabatini of Spain, noting Halard's aggressive play. SP Services The of Huskie football team is on the road again. After a week of training camp, the Dogs travel to Edmonton today for their first exhibition game of the season against the University of Alberta Golden Bears. "I think what we're looking to get from this is some contact, which we haven't had," said Huskie coach Brian Towriss, "We'll get some good game experience and a game look, which is important.

We'll see how some young kids react under game conditions." The Huskies are taking a playing roster of 52 from a group of approximately 65 thanks to a rash of minor injuries and players away from camp. Missing from the lineup tonight will be veteran running back Jeff Slabik (hamstring), inside receiver Carey Prokop (who is only about 90 per cent after under-going knee surgery in June), receivers Drew Walker (competing in track and field at the Canada Games) and Jason Johnson (pitching at the World Native Games in Inverm-ere, B.C.). The Huskies open their regular season on Aug. 28 against the Manitoba Bisons. Championship is on at the Riverside Country Club through to Saturday.

Low team from Wednesday's qualifying round was Cliff Selander and Ray Field who shot a 65. Teams with 72 and better made the 16-team championship flight. Winners in the first round of match play were: Selander and Field, Murray Osborn and Joel Teal, George Jansen and Dave Curniski, Andrew Roberts and Tom Kroeker, Rick Hillstad and John Welsh, Jerry Bulmer and Doug Boiven, Brent Ashton and Doug Remenda and Ron McLeod and Bill Davern. Congratulations to the 80 competitors who raised $20,000 for the United WayAir Canada Charity Golf Tournament on Tuesday at the Willows. The low net points winners were Laurence Fischer, Kelly Werschler, Ian Mackay and Wes Penrod.

The four won a trip to Bermuda for their efforts. Top fundraisers were Joe Remai, Bruce Mathews, Bob Grant and Daryl Penn. There are three names to add to the hole-in-one club this week. Bill Metcalfe got his ace with a nine-iron on the 140-yard 7th hole at the Saskatoon Golf and Country Club west course while Velma Melynchuk hit for one using a seven wood on the par-three fourth hole of that same course. Belated congratulations to Garth Graham who marked a one at Green-bryre's 205-yard ninth hole in July.

5:30 Anderson Theresa Kirkpatrick Golf Notes very sharp, really. My qualifying round was 87 but it was a 49 (front) and 38 (back) so it was a bad news good news sort of thing and the next two rounds were around 85 or 84. Today wasn't a lot better," admitted Lawson, after edging Medicine Hat's Corinne Gnam in 17 holes. "My tee shots are not going very far so I've had to hit some good fairway woods and some good approach shots. And then, my putting wasn't very good either." On Thursday, Lawson was five up on Gnam after 11 holes but lost the next three.

Gnam then missed a putt on 15 to put Lawson three up. Gnam cut the lead back to two with a win on 16 but gave up the game with a split on 17. She's expecting today's match to be even tougher. "I suspect she (Anderson) is going to be pretty relaxed. This is a pretty relaxing place and match play is less nerve-wrecking than medal play, for me at least.

You can have a bad hole and forget about it unless you start to slide. But generally I don't think nerves will bother her at all. I'll have to be playing very well to make it a match." Kim Brozer of Birch Hills was the top Saskatchewan golfer at the Canadian amateur women's championships in Edmonton, ranking fifth after the third round Thursday. Brozer shot 76 on the par-71 Mayfair Golf and Country Club course for a three-round total 227, seven shots off the pace set by Mary Ann Lapointe of Dollard Des Ormeaux, Quebec. Dean Prosky of Saskatoon fired rounds of 75 and 73 to lead Saskatchewan to an eighth place finish in the Willingdon Cup inter-provincial team standings at the Canadian amateur men's golf championship Thursday in Victoria, B.C.

Alberta, B.C., Ontario and Quebec all finished with 432 points but Alberta emerged victorious on the first hole of a sudden death playoff on the par-70, Victoria Golf Club. Nova Scotia was fifth at 436, Manitoba sixth at 439, New Brunswick seventh at 449, followed by Saskatchewan at 457, Newfoundland at 460 and P.E.I, at 470. Luke Mongrain of Yorkton shot rounds of 75 and 80 for a 155 total. Randy Gilewich of Regina (76-82158) and Colin Coben of Deli-sle (78-78-156) rounded out Saskatchewan's 457 total. Closer to home, the 16th annual Saskatchewan Amateur Team Knickle re-signs with Kings INGLEWOOD, Calif.

(AP) Goaltender Rick Knickle, who spent 13 seasons in the minor leagues before making it to the NHL last February with the Los Angeles Kings, has re-signed with the team, the NHL club announced Thursday. Knickle, 33, appeared in 10 games for the Kings last season, posting a 6-4-0 record and 3.95 goals-against average. One rumor blowing through the canvas village at the National Tennis Centre at York University has Seles fully recovered from the injury, but she's too busy working on a lawsuit against the organizers of the Hamburg tournament.

The crazed fan jumped from the public gallery and knifed her while she sat with her back to the centre court crowd. Another story suggests the injury is so serious Seles cannot swing a tennis racket and may never play again. Sanchez Vicario, defending her Canadian Open title this week, said she too hasn't heard from Seles, but recently sent the 19-year-old a fax. "I haven't had any answer yet," the Spaniard said. That question has been asked over and over again this week in post-match interviews at the Matinee Ltd. International women's tennis championship in Toronto. Have you heard from Monica? Has she been in contact with you? The answer from just about every player paraded through the media tent, including Steffi Graf and Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, and has been the same: No.

Graf hasn't heard from, Seles since an emotional visit with her in hospital a day after a deranged fan stabbed her in the back April 30 at a tournament in Hamburg, Germany. The German man charged in the knifing claimed he wanted to help Graf, also German, regain the No. 1 ranking. Graf has since gained the top spot. Graf said a number of stories from one end of the spectrum to the other about her rival's injury are circulating on the professional tour, but she refused to share them.
