International D1 Monday, February 10, 1986 Saskatoon, Saskatchewan Star-Phoenix In Brief NASA said warned of likely failure I WASHINGTON AP) A presidential commission investigating the Challenger explosion told NASA to turn over all internal space agency documents on what a newspaper called the "potential failure" of critical seals in the shuttle's booster rockets. Meanwhile, U.S. navy divers and specially equipped NASA vessels probed the Atlantic for shuttle wreckage and officials said underwater recovery operations could take several more weeks to complete. Presidential commission chairman William Rogers said he asked (or the documents Sunday after a New York Times article described discrepancies between internal memorandums of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and what space agency officials told the commission last week. Rogers said in a telephone in-, terview that NASA had agreed to co-operate with the request, but he declined to discuss the matter further.

NASA said Sunday it was assembling the documents. He worked tor George Holler, who farmed in the Maymont Community, and later married Katie Redekop in 1932, when he contin ued to farm in the Maymont District until he retired to Saskatoon in May of 1974. Benno Toews, ago82 years of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, occurred at Central Haven Nursing Home on Friday, February 7th, 1986. The Funeral Service will be heldon Tuesday, February 11th at from First Mennonite Church (41 8 Queen Street) conducted by Rev. Henry Reimer.

Surviving are his loving wife, Catherine; two sons, Theodore Mary Lou Toews of Menlo Park, California and Glendon (Judy) Toews of Beechy, one daughter, Loreen Tavesof Toronto, Ont. four sisters, Isie Hooge, Elma Toews, Anna (Sylvester) Funk, all of Saskatoon and Louise (Blake) Frlesenof two brothers-in-law, Jake Sawatzky of Saskatoon and Herman Rlesen of Winnipeg, four grandchildren and one great grandchild; plus numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Rov. David and Margaret Toews and four sisters, Margaret Sawatky, Marie Riesen, Dora Schellenberg and Irene Toews. Rev.

Toews was born on July 7th, 1903 at Tiefengrund, Saskatchewan in the Rosth-ern District. He received his schooling in Rosth-ern and later attended the University of Saskatchewan and Bethel College In Kansas. He had been an educator tor many years in Canada and the United States. Rev. Toews was ordained to the Ministery in 1938.

He served as a Missionary In Oklahoma for a number of years and later served in his ministery as pastor and educator in his church throughout Canada and the United States. He had taught at the Rosthern Junior College, Canadian Mennonite Bible College in Winnipeg. University of Waterloo, Bluftton College In Ohioand FreemanCollege in South Dakota. He had made his home In Saskatoon for the last 12years, where he had workedasa substitute teacher with the Saskatoon Board of Education. Rev.

Toews had been an active member of First Mennonite Church and taken part In the Minist ery at the church. Interment will lake place in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. Funeral service arrangements have been entrusted to the Saskatoon Funeral Home. WAITE Jennie E. (Penny) Waite, age 71 years, of 241 5th Ave.

He was predeceased by one son Olek, in 1962, his parents, Mr.

and Mrs. Bill Cyba, one brother and one sister in Poland. The late Mr. Cyba was born in Vllbor Sokal, Western Ukraine, on December 27, 1903andcametoCanada in 1926, settling in Hafford, Sask. He helped his cousin, Mrs.

MaryChuney with thedray service. In 1928, he married EvaSalahub when he started hisown dray busi ness and in 1 942 he started work wi th the C.N.R. where he worked until his retirement in 1968. Mr. Cyba was devoted to his church, was a choir member for many years and assisted in looking after the church grounds as well as the cemetery.

The Honorary Pallbearers will be John Herman, Fred Harack, Tefon Wovtowich. Bill Senkus, Onufrey Sokil and Bill Duma. The Active Pallbearers will be Randy Cyba, Gary cyba, Walter Harack, Stanley Novicki, Paul Karpluk and Adam Herman. Interment will take place in the Hafford Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery. MCDONALD The death of Mrs. Maude McDonald, age 99 years, of Olivet Lodge, Saska toon, occurred at her residence on Saturday, February 8, 1986. Surviving are several nieces and nephews. Mrs. McDonald was predeceased by her husband Duncan A.

McDonald November 23, 1968, three sisters and five brothers. Mrs. McDonald was born in Havelock, Ontario and was raised in Carman, Manitoba. Mrs. McDonald moved to Saskatoon married her late husband in 1924 and they moved to the Kerrobert District to farm.

In 1933 they moved to the Turtleford District tofarmandthey retired to Saskatoon In 1951 Mrs. McDonald wasa member of St. Thomas Wesley UnitedChurch. Saskatoon, occurred at his residence on Saturday, February 1986. Surviving are three sisters, Edna-Pain and her husband, John, of Saskatoon, Winnie Brown and her husbartd, George, of Bur-nabv, B.C., and Dolly Antoriacci and her husband, Jim, of Thornhill, Ontario. Mr. Elliott was predeceased by his parents and one brother Jack. He was born and raised in the Vonda District.

Mr. lliott farmed and enioved sportsof all kinds until III health forced his retirement. The family would appreciate donations to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, P.O. Box 313, Saskatoon, Sask. S7K 3L3 rather than floral tributes.

Mrs. Leader issurvived by her husband Sid, Saskatoon; her son Garth and his wife Lee. Oshawa, Ontario; and two grandchil dren Leslie and John. Frances was born Decem ber II, 1911 in Stewart Valley, Saskatchewan She graduated from the Swift Current General Hospital School of Nursing in 1934 and married Sidney J. Leader in 1936.

They moved with their son Garth to make their home in Saskatoon in 1946. Frances was an active member of the Sas katoon Horticultural Society and the Saskatoon Gvrette Club. Tuesday, February 11, 1986 at St. Bruno's Parish, Bruno, Sask. A Memorial Service for his friends in Saskatoon will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 11, 1986 at the Faith Alive Church at 335 AvenueG South, Saskatoon. Predeceased by his father Theodore in 1976.

Surviving are his mother Agnes S. Lummerding of Bruno, his former wife Eva of Edmonton; two sons, Kim (Nancy) of Red Earth, Alberta, Kirby of Edmonton; two daughters, Karri of Edmon ton, Kellie (Christian) Paquette of Edmonton; three brothers, Del (Donna) of Saskatoon, Nor- bert (Janis) of Bruno, Eric (Anne) of Fort McMurray, Alberta; three sisters, Marcella (Mrs. Ben Pomedli) of Pilger, Clara (Mrs Oliver Larrivee) of Moose Jaw, Maxine (Mrs Peter Pomedli) of Moose Jaw; his close friend Blanche Neufeld of Saskatoon; and numerous nieces and nephews. Jerry was born in Bruno, attended Normal School in Saskatoon and taught High School in Dorintoshand Middle Lake. and In Alberta.

He also was engaged in the Lum ber business in Alberta. Jerry was well known for his lively personality and intellectual pursuits Many hours of enjoyment were spent with friends in song with Jerry at the guitar. CARR The dealhof Bertha V. Bird) Carr, age 81 years, of Saskatoon, occurred in a local hospital on Saturday, February 8, 1986. The Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, February 12 at 3: 30 P.M. from theChapel of Saskatoon uner-al Home conducted by Rev. Bert Mather.

Memorial donations to the charity of the donor's choice will be appreciated in lieu of flowers. Surviving are her husband Robert; her sister Hattie Purdy of Burnaby, B.C.; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by four brothers, and four sisters. Bertha was born In Centrevllle, Nova Scotia In 1904 and came to Tate, Sask. In 1921 where she worked in the telephone office for a number of years.

She went to Massachusetts in 1923 and returned to Saskatchewan in 1926. Ber-tha married Robert Carr in Wynyard, Sask. on October 21, 1932 when they came to make their home In Saskatoon. Bertha enioved ceramics and knitting. Cremation with intf rment to follow in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.
