By Vance Oliver of the Star-Phoenix They're better known as the Super Wives, but Penny Ryan's rink from Kelowna, B.C., is displaying more than one use for a broom. Ryan, along with Kerrylyn Richard and Liz Folk, are spouses of the much-ballyhooed members of the Rick Folk-Pat Ryan Super Rink which was formed this season. Only lead Iris Neilson is not bound by holy matrimony to the Super Rink. The West Coast rink handily disposed of Deb Shermack's Edmonton foursome 8-3 after eight ends Sunday to capture the title in the 1990 Labatt's Lite Classic at the Nutana Curling Club. "It's been thrown to us this year that we're the super-wives or wives of the Super Rink," joked Ryan, who skips the Kelowna rink but throws third rocks behind Richard.

"Maybe this way we got rid of that tag. "Now they're the super-husbands." Ryan's rink jumped to a 3-0 lead after the first end, but Sher-mack narrowed the score to 4-2 after five. In Sunday's most exciting finish in NFL action, Krieg connected with Paul Skansi on a 25-yard TD pass as time expired and Norm Johnson kicked the extra point, rallying the Seattle Seahawks over the Kansas City Chiefs 17-16. Chiefs' linebacker Derrick Thomas set a league record with seven quarterback sacks.

But on the final play, Krieg wriggled out of, Thomas's clutches and threw through the house as Ryan stole two. In the seventh, Shermack had a chance to count two, but scored only one as she wasn't able to stick with a takeout on her final rock. Ryan and picked up two more in the eighth before Shermack conceded the victory. "She's normally dead-on with her weight," said Ryan, who played with Shermack when she was based in Edmonton. "She didn't have her draw weight as she usually does." The Kelowna rink, which earned $8,000 in prize money, hinted there was a healthy rivalry between husbands and wives.

But all were quick to add they always pull for each other in big bonspiels. "We did have one practice game at the beginning of the year," said Richard, whose husband Gerry is lead of the Super Rink. "(And) they waxed us." Ryan defeated LaDawn Funk of Edmonton 8-6 and Carol Davis of Calgary 6-5 earlier in the day to reach the final. Shermack, who pocketed $4,600, downed Dorenda Schoen-hals of Regina 6-4 and Heather Howard of Saskatoon 4-3 Sunday to advance to the final. third downs and not allow the opposing team to convert third downs.

"I think that was the best defence we've had on third downs this season." The 49ers held Dallas to nine first downs the Cowboys were l-for-10 on third-down conversions and 158 yards, both season lows for the San Francisco defence. Roger Craig, playing significant minutes for the first time since tearing a ligament in his right knee on Oct. 7, gained 49 yards on 16 carries for the 49ers. "Everyone thinks it's vital we get our running game on track," Craig said. "We're winning games and we're 9-0 right now.

It really doesn't matter if we run the ball or not. "If we want to be stronger the second half (of the season), we need to run the ball well, but it's not something to panic about. It's not panic, but all these are concerns that the 49ers are trying to shake off. "They seem to be as loose as possible under the circumstances," Seifert said. "As the week goes along, there has to be that tension.

That's part of the professional. "Stress is part of a football season. You're not going to run around happy and jovial all the time. There's a lot on your mind." In New York, Giants' coach Bill Parcells, while enjoying his 9-0 unbeaten record, still doesn't want to think about a perfect 16-0 season or even a Dec. 3 showdown with the 49ers.

"I'm just thinking about Detroit," he said of New York's next opponent. as ski coach Wilson refused to name the skier involved in the relationship. Don Lyon, the team's downhill coach, will take over Wilson's job as head coach. Wilson, 30, had been with the national team since 1985. He took over as head coach when Currie Chapman resigned Vk years ago.

Wilson said it wasn't a difficult decision to quit. Having a relationship with one of the team members would have put an unnecessary strain on the rest of the group. down passes to four different receivers as the Bills beat Phoenix 45-14 for their seventh straight victory. Ware hoped for some sparks and a lot of success in his first NFL start. Instead, the 1989 Heis-man Trophy winner was ineffective and was pulled at halftime of Detroit's 17-7 loss to Minnesota.

Elsewhere, the New York Giants improved to 9-0 by ripping the Los Angeles Rams 31-7 and San Francisco beat Dallas 24-6 to remain unbeaten as Joe Montana completed 12 passes to Jerry Rice for 147 yards and a touchdown. junior title of 29 passes for 78 yards and was intercepted three times. "They were big, strong and fast," Lachance said. "Their defence was better than we thought. They had a good pass rush and blitzed well and I was pretty much contained and couldn't get outside." Colts' quarterback Jason Mcln-tyre completed 12 of 24 passes for 211 yards and threw a pair of touchdowns Brian Bieche and Tom on an interception return, had the other Calgary toward the end zone, where Skansi outjumped several defenders and made the catch.

"I'm glad they didn't call in-the-grasp," Krieg said. "He had his hands around my hips. I just shook away from him, fortunately." Thomas, the AFC's defensive rookie of the year last year, said, "I thought I had him. That last sack I didn't get is the one I'm going to remember." Kelly had to overcome snow, wind and rain in Buffalo, plus the loss of his leading receiver. After Andre Reed was injured in the first quarter, Kelly threw touch places." It marked the sixth straight title by a Western Canadian team and the 14th in the last 16 years.

"It's never easy the second time around," said Colts' coach Keith Kendal, whose club secured its second straight Canadian Bowl. "Teams are always looking for you. This wasn't a case of a couple of guys winning it for us, though, this was 40 guys who were out playing for each other." The Colts defence keyed on Fratmen all-star quarterback Rick Lachance. The second-year quarterback completed just seven Calgary Colts retain BILL PARCELLS can be beaten "I'm not naive enough to think we can't be beaten. It seems that every team we're facing is giving us its best shot, and I think that will continue to happen." Meanwhile, the new, improved Jim Kelly fewer interceptions, more touchdowns has re-energized the Buffalo Bills' Super Bowl dreams.

The AFC's top passer, Kelly has minimized his miscues in leading the Bills to seven straight victories and an 8-1 record. "I have a lot of confidence in what we're doing out there," Kelly said. "I have confidence in the play-calling and where I'm supposed to go with the football," he said. "It definitely helps and it's a big plus, but again, I've got to give a lot of credit to the offensive line." Kelly has maintained ever since coming to Buffalo that he couldn't lead the Bills to the promised land by himself. Now that the Bills are headed in that direction, Kelly credits the talent around him.

S-P Services These San Francisco 49ers are an irritating lot.1 Somebody ought to grab them by the shoulders, shake them, and scream, "You're 9-0! What are you going to worry about this time?" Regardless, these 49ers, one shy of the NFL record of 18 consecutive victories, managed to find something. After beating Green Bay last week, the 49ers fretted about their anemic running game. This week, after a 24-6 victory over the Dallas Cowboys, it's their punting. "We didn't punt well, and, yeah, I'm concerned," 49ers' coach George Seifert said Monday. "We discussed it after the ballgame.

It's something we'll work on. "We'll continue to work with (punter) Barry (Helton) and we just have to believe that he'll get better." Helton punted twice against Dallas, the kicks travelling 21 and 19 yards. Over his last three games, Helton has averaged 29.7 yards per punt. Seifert admitted the 49ers will keep themselves open to looking to improve the position. "We'll look at punters, but not any more dramatically so," Seifert said.

"It's not like we're going to get somebody new in here." Almost lost among the hand-wringing concerns was San Francisco's excellent defensive performance and improved running game. "I was encouraged by the way we were able to run and control the ball the way we did," Seifert said. "We had the ball 40 minutes, and that had to do with our ability to run the football and convert Wilson resigns CALGARY (CP) Nick Wilson resigned as coach of the national women's ski team Monday, saying his "personal friendship" with a team member could result in problems as the season continues. "I always found my role was a problem eliminator and I saw potential for (this relationship) to get in the way of what I was doing," Wilson said from his Ottawa home. "Not that there was a problem.

I didn't want the potential for there to be one when it really counted." WINDSOR, Ont. (CP) Calgary tailback Steve Thompson rushed for 189 yards on 29 carries and scored two touchdowns and Ashord Baker also scored a pair of touchdowns Saturday as the Colts defeated the Windsor AKO Fratmen 50-15 in the Canadian Junior Football League championship. The Colts used a bruising defence to limit Windsor to just 58 yards net offence while Calgary rolled up 463 yards in net offence as Western Canada continued its dominance of junior football in front of more than 5,000 fans. "I'm still dazed," said Windsor wide receiver Rick Langlois, who absorbed a pair of punishing hits during Windsor first possession.
