CANADIAN JUNIOR MEN (At Sudbury) Friday's Playoffs Semi-final Manitoba 00201001011-6 tain rocks with minor running flaws. Geez, added Kawaja, maybe we could program one of those computers to function as a skip. Now that would be great. At least it wouldnt give you crap when you throw over weight. Both Canadian rinks skipped respectively by Ed Werenich and Alison Goring of Toronto have their work cut out for them in the week-long round-robin event defending the titles won last year in Milwaukee.

The two Canadian teams open play today against West Germany in the second of two scheduled draws. The games are to start at 8 a.m. CST. Andy Kapp and his world junior team from Fussen will take on Werenich, the 1983 world champion, while on the next sheet, Gor-ings national champions meet Almut Hege-Scholl. Scholl turned the tables on her former skip, Andrea Schopp, in the finals of the German womens championship.

Sunday marks the only day in the preliminary rounds with four draws scheduled. The Canadian men meet Italy and Denmark, and the women go against Japan and Denmark. Unless one team goes undefeated, the top four teams from both the mens and womens sections qualify for the championship round Friday. The Sports Network, with North American television rights, has opted to provide coverage for the entire eight days of the competition, including the semi-finals and finals. Before joining the regular cable television package last year, TSN provided coverage only for the preliminary rounds and was obligated to turn over the programming to CBC-TV for the semis and finals.

VASTERAS, Sweden (CP) -The curling men from Canada will probably find the odds stacked more in their favor on the ice than they did this week with an electronic arm. ABB, the giant robotics plant on which the economy of Vasteras depends, is also hosting the Canadian team during the week-long curling championship. During one of the few free nights theyll enjoy before the competition begins today, the Canadian men and women were entertained at the plant, where they became acquainted with the robotic arm. And if they thought its version of tic-tac-toe was childs play, they were soon to learn the ABB version which stands for ASEA Brown Boveri was not to be taken lightly. There were two versions we could play, said Neil Harrison, the Canadian fifth.

You could play man against machine or man against man. The computer never lost. It was awesome, agreed Canadian third John Kawaja. The things unbeatable. Harrison be pressed into duty on the weekend for three games while Kawaja attends to business in West Germany.

Hell miss games on Sunday and Monday. He thought the computer arm similar to ones employed in the automotive assembly lines could be programmed to play chess, although I suppose it would depend on the level of chess you play as to how successful it would be. Kawaja figures the computer could be adapted to test rocks for major competitions, taking out the guesswork currrently used by skips and players to identify cer NHLlTflDAY WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS DRAW (Draw tor the 1990 work) curling championship which begins Saturday at Vasters, Sweden (m-men, w-women, all times CST): Saturday, March 31 4 un.
