CYANMAGENTAYELLOWBLACK EDITION 50R C4 South Bend Tribune OBITUARIES Tuesday, December 11, 2012 MMaarriillyynn JJooaann NNoovvaakk Sept.24, 1936 Dec.7, 2012 MICHIGAN CITY Marilyn Joan 76, passed away peacefully on December 7th at St. Anthony Hospital in Michigan City, Indiana, surrounded by family. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, December 15, 2012, at 10:00 am at Queen of all Saints Catholic Church, 606 S.Woodland Michigan City, with Rev. Kevin Huber officiating. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery, Michigan City.Visitation hours will be Friday from 4 pm to 8 pm and Saturday from 8:30 am to 9:30 am in the Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington Michigan City.

She was born September 24, 1936, in Hawarden, Iowa, to Otis Irene (Taylor) Brown, who preceded her in death.On June 19, 1954, she married Larry G.Novak in Troy, passed away August 16, 2010.Larry and he called her, were married 56 years and had lived in Michigan City since 1970, coming from Troy, IL. She is survived by 3 sons, Larry (Linda) Novak, John Otis (Pam) Novak and Randall 2 daughters, Cynthia A. (Brian) Steif and Stacy J. (Kip) Bancroft.She was a loving grandma to seven grandsons, James (Julie), Ryan, John Henry, Scott (Nicole), and Anthony Novak, Nick Steif and Nigel granddaughters, Brittany (Scott) Fogus, Brianne Steif and Katie Bancroft; three great-granddaughters, Addison Novak, Ellie and Adalyn one brother, Bernard T. (Mary Ann) Brown.She is also survived by her loving caregiver, Enkhtuya Janchio, who not only provided excellent care but became a dear personal friend and companion who helped fill her last years with laughter and love.

Jo loved people and fam- ily.A talented seamstress, she sewed quilts for all her grandchildren before suffering a serious stroke in 1992, which also cut short her career in the Michigan City Area Schools, retiring as a secretary after 19 years of service. She was selected to the Michigan City Area Schools Wall of Fame in 1997. Prior to her stroke, Jo loved to race walk and was a co-founder of the Dunes Walking Club.She was a proud participant in the torch relay in Michigan City for the Pan Am games of 1987 and numerous race walk events around the country. Grandma Jo will be remembered for her strong will to live, surviving time and again from health issues later in life.She remains an inspiration to all she knew, and will always be remembered for her big smile, quick wit and loving nature.She is now at peace. Dorothy was born July 24, 1931, in Elkhart, IN, to Gordon and Mary Sarah (Robin) Fletcher. On August 27, 1948, in South Bend, IN, as Dorothy M.Fletcher, she married George V.Simms. George survives along with their children, Marsha Selvage (Simms) of Allen, TX, Van (Hope) Simms of Niles, MI, and Todd M. (Sharon) Simms of Mishawaka, grandchildren and three brothers, Gordon Fletcher, Bob Fletcher and Carl Fletcher, all of Elkhart, IN; and one sister, Madeline Warren of Edwardsburg, MI.

A sister, Ruth Backert, preceded Dorothy in death. Funeral services will be on Wednesday, December 12, 2012, at 1:00 p.m.at the Bubb Funeral Chapel, 3910 N.Main Street, Mishawaka, where there will also be visitation on Wednesday from 11:00 a.m.until 1:00 p.m. Jim Getz will officiate the services.Burial will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Osceola, IN. Chester was born on October 5, 1926, in South Bend, to the late Ike and Vera (Pinkowski) Skwar- was also preceded in death by three brothers, Arthur, Daniel and Leonard Skwarcan. He is survived by his children, Rebecca Foster of Carmel, IN, Bruce (Lee) Skwarcan of Elkhart, IN, Chet (Pat) Skwarcan of Danville, IN, Tamara (Lee) Stephan of Fishers, IN, Kenneth (Lori) Skwarcan of Carmel, IN, Shelly DeBusk of McCordsville, IN, Cynthia (Tod) Rash of Ft.Wayne, IN, and Jason (Jo Ellen) Skwarcan of Fishers, their mother, Alice Skwarcan; eighteen grandchildren, Jennifer Foster, Krista (Michael) Lyons, Mark and Michael Skwarcan, April (Brandon) Lewis, Megan (Justin) Herald, Andrew, Amy (Brad) Merkley, Aaron Skwarcan, Tyler, Adam (Kelsey) and Aaron Rash, Cameron, MacKenzie and Austin Skwarcan, Elijah and Hannah Debusk, and Parker four great- grandchildren, Riley, Landon, Ashley and Avery.He is also survived by a special sister-in-law, Phyllis Skwarcan. He honorably served his country for two years in the United States Navy Seabees during WW II. Chet was an usher for St. Vincent de Paul Church, where he was a parishioner since 1962.Chet was a graduate of South Bend Catholic High Central and Purdue University.Chet retired in 1989 after 40 years of service from Reith-Riley Construction Company, Inc.as a Division Manager.

He was also a land surveyor, professional engineer, and after retirement sold real estate for Cressy and Everett Realty.He enjoyed playing the drums for 35 years, and proudly served on the St.Joseph Funeral Home and Cemetery Board of Directors. Visitation will be from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm Thursday, December 13, 2012, in ST.JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Road, where a vigil will be prayed at 7:30 pm. SSaannddrraa WWiinniiccuurr Oct.4, 1939 Dec.8, 2012 SOUTH BEND Dr. Sandra tor, biologist, writer, mother, to complications from multiple myeloma on Dec.8, 2012, after battling the disease for more than 20 years.She faced it bravely and with a quiet grace that often belied the difficulty of her struggle, and her manner served as an inspiration to those who knew and loved her.Sandra is survived by her son, Zev Winicur of Indianapolis, IN, and his Shirah, and sons, Omri and by her daughter, Paula Winicur of New Canaan, CT, and her Christopher Madden, and daughter, Tess. Born and raised in the Bronx, Sandra attended the prestigious Bronx High School of Science and went on to earn a degree from Hunter College, a degree from the University of Connecticut, and a doctorate from Cal Tech, all in biology.Following graduate school, she settled in South Bend to teach at Indiana University South Bend.During her more than 30 years as a professor at IUSB (from 19702004), Sandra taught a variety of courses that ranged from introductory biology to more specialized offerings, including physiology, biology of aging, biology of women, and the image of women scientists in literature.She also taught biology courses to students attending the nursing school at IUSB.She touched the lives of many students during her tenure, and would often run into those who recalled both her and her courses with great fond- ness.Sandra was a member of the National Association of Biology Teachers, and she started the Four-Year College Section of the NABT.She received the Indiana University Faculty Colloquium on Excellence in Teaching (FACET) award in 1991, IUSB Distinguished Teaching award in 1992, and Herman Frederic Lieber Award for excellence in teaching in 1993.She also judged science fairs from elementary through high school, including the South Bend Hebrew Day School, and the Northern Indiana Regional Science and Engineering Fair.

She was active in the South Bend Jewish community, and was a member of both Temple Beth-El and Hebrew Orthodox Synagogue.She participated in Torah study groups and Temple book clubs, taught religious school, and taught science at Bais Yaakov Junior High School for girls. As a mother, she filled every day with fun discoveries and adventures.She took this role to heart, not only for her own children, but for all young people she encountered.She was a mentor to many, and helped guide and shape lives and careers. Sandra was also an avid writer and reader who actively engaged both pursuits in the form of writing workshops and book clubs.She excelled at the short-form memoir, in which she related a personal story, more often than not from her youth. Sandra wrote honestly, unflinchingly, and with great humor about the people who shaped her, and in telling their stories, she told her own. Wise, 92, of Elkhart, passed away at Valley View Health Center on December 7, 2012. Ernest was born on August 5, 1920, to Glendon and Mabel (Taylor) Wise in South Bend, Indiana.On December 28, 1941, Ernest married Doris D.Hight;she preceded him in death.He was a sergeant in the United States Army while serving in World War II.He earned the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Silver Star.Ernest worked for the U.S.Postal Service in vehicle maintenance before retiring in 1983.He was a deacon and head usher at Calvary Baptist Church. Ernest was previously a Cub Scout leader, and an avid craft and hobbyist. He is survived by a daughter, Sharon Ann (Rick) Luke of La Mesa, sons, Douglas J.
