Mill St Scientists Hear Leukemia Report Report Made At Opening Meeting Of Experimental Biology Federation DETROIT, April startling new report on the nature of leukemia was made in Detroit Tuesday at the opening meeting of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology The new concept is that leukemia does not, as formerly supposed, deserve to be viewed as a cancer-j type affliction of the blood. The report was made by Dr.

Bernard Steinberg and Ruth A Martin. of the Toledo Hospital lnsti- tuto of Medical Research, to the more than 3.500 laboratory scientists gathered for the lour-day meeting The Toledo researchers said their work showed that white cells are the same in both a normal person and a leukemia victim, although the number of them varies. Dr. Steinberg said, however, that cancer victims display a different type of white cell. He added "This observation was significant because it indicated that leukemia is not necessarily a cancer of the blood, as commonly be-! iieved." Leukemia is a disease in which the white cells multiply too rapidly and crowd out the red cells, causing the victim to become weak and anemic.

The scientists indicated that their findings might lead to an en- Urely new method for treating the disease. More than 1,000 scientific papers are being presented at the meeting. with only a few of them having any immediate use to the general public or the medical profession. Drive Children Move Fast.
