The disciples weri told hy Jesus to take no money with them on their Joufneyi to preach and heal, nor "two c-oaK neither nhoei, nor yet staves: for the workman It worthy of his meat." "And when ye come Into an house, salute It, and If the house he worthy, let your peace come upon It; hut If It he not worthy, let your peace return to you," Jesus commanded the 12. "And It came fo pass, when Jesus hart made an end of commanding Ills disciples, Hft departed thence fo teach and to preach In their rltlfW MEMORY VKUSfc Matthew Jesus Commissions the Twelve HE GAVE THEM POWER TO HEAD AND PREACH Hy NEWMAN CAMPBELL MANY BOOKS and magazine articles are printed telling us how to get along successfully with olher people; how to look for jobs, how to get what we aspire to or how to get the best out of life, etc. Some of them may prove helpful. When Jesus called His 12 dls- rlples together to tell them what He had planned for them, He did not tell them they were to go out Into the world and make everyone their friend, or how to make people love them. He did not speak of the wealth they would earn or the fame.

Far from It. He told them that their mission In life was to preach to people who were antagonistic; of the enemies they would make and the persecutions they would suffer. Would His words entice the men and women of this genern- tion to do His bidding? Not many, but some do take the Master's words, spoken so long ago, and follow in His steps and those of his many meet what they met persecution, scourging, torture and death. or city, shake off the dust of your feet." That house or city would be punished In the day of Judgment, said Jesus. Then the Lord told them what they must expect while doing His work.

"Behold, I send you forth as sheep In the midst of wolves; be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves." He warned of men who would deliver them up to the councils. to be scourged In the synagogues; to be brought before governors and kings for His sake. They were not to worry about what they should say to the governors and kings. "For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit, of your Father which speaketh in you." Keven members of own households would rise against them, Jesus warned. "And shall be hated of all men for My name's sake; but he that endur- eth to the end shall he saved." When they svere persecuted In one rlty they were told to flee to another.

"And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body." Not a sparrow falls to the ground without your Father knowing It, so "Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows." "Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a aword." He loved his father and mother more than the Lord was not worthy to be a follower of the Master, and "he that taketh not his cross, and followeth Me is not worthy of Me." "He that flndeth his life shall lose it; and he that loseth his life for My sake shall find it." And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward." How many of the modern followers of Jesus would be willing as were these 12 humbte and ignorant do as the Lord commanded them? Not. one flinched from his appointed task, although sve never hear of Judas preaching his Master's gospel.

After ending His commands to His twelve disciples, Jesus departed thence to preach in their cities. nroduced hv the Division of Chriitldn Education SSa.TcK^r«Th."chu«hJi^ by permission Dlitrlbuted by King Features Syndicate. Jesus called His disciples to Him and instructed them in the work He wanted them to do. Their names were Simon Peter, Andrew, his brother; James, son of Zebedee, and John, his brother; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew, the publican; Alphaeus and Thaddaeus; Simon the Can- anean, and Judas Iscariot. He first gave them the power to cure all diseases and to cast out evil spirits.

He then commanded them to go out and preach to "the lost sheep of Israel." They were not to go 1o the to to preach, sayirtg, "The kingdom of heaven is at hand."
